Wei Jingsheng Attends and is Honored at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of the International Human Rights Law Group, now named Global Rights

On December 10, 2003, Global Rights, formerly known as the International Human Rights Law Group, celebrated its 25th Anniversary in Washington, DC, USA.  Mr. Wei Jingsheng was invited to attend the gala on this UN Human Rights Day.  Wei is on its Honorary Committee, which also includes Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, Mary Robinson, etc.

Prior to the gala Wei attended the VIP reception where he thanked the board members and activists of the group for their long time advocacy of human rights globally and gave special thanks to the Executive Director, Ms. Gay McDougall.  During the gala Mr. James Fitzpatrick, Chair of the board of directors, honored Wei with other activists and contributors.

Close to 500 friends and supporters attended the gala to celebrate with music and poetry that have motivated and guided the human rights movement over the past 25 years.  Human Rights activists from Afghanistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Cambodia, and Nigeria traveled to Washington to share their stories with everyone.

Civil rights activist Julian Bond delivered powerful words by poets from around the world. Guest musicians Sweet Honey in the Rock and the Washington Performing Arts Society men and women of the Gospel Choir moved everyone's spirits further with stirring harmonies and rhythms.

Global Rights is a human rights advocacy group that partners with local activists to challenge oppressive ideologies and power structures, channel international pressure to secure human rights protections, and amplify new voices within the global discourse.  With offices in 10 countries, it helps local activists create just societies through proven strategies for effecting change.  For more information, please visit its website at: www.globalrights.org
