Wei Jingsheng Invited to the 10th Anniversary of the Vietnam Human Rights Day in US Senate

Editor's note:

On the Saturday of this Memorial weekend, I stopped by the newly dedicated National WWII Memorial located in the central axis of the Mall in Washington DC.  Watching that big crowd of 200,000 people who celebrated the dedication ceremony leave and later listened to the radio broadcasting of the dedication event, I sigh.  It took more than half century for these 16 millions US veterans served in WWII to be recognized this way, how long will it take for China?  My current goal, however, is not a memorial, but to help build the real democracy in China, as well as the other countries which lack of democracy, including Vietnam.

-- Ciping Huang

On May 11, 2004, the 10th Anniversary of Vietnam Human Rights Day, Wei Jingsheng was invited again to attend the ceremony in the US Senate.  Ciping Huang, Executive Director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, was also invited and attended the event.

Wei has been invited to the annual celebration every year since his arrival in the US, and has attended whenever he could.  More than a dozen US Congressional members have sponsored and attended this event that was held in the US Senate Caucus Room in the Russell Senate Office Building.  The day was designated by the US Congress in 1994 in support of efforts by the Non-Violent Movement for Human Rights in Vietnam to achieve freedom and human rights for the people of Vietnam.

Wei was warmly welcomed by many long-time Vietnamese friends; many of them came from outside the Washington Metropolitan area, from as far as Los Angeles, and even outside continental America.   He is welcomed by the leaders of the organizations, especially Dr. Quan Nguyen, head of International Committee for Freedom to Support The Non-Violent Movement For Human Rights In Vietnam.

Later, he attended the dinner banquet in commemoration of this day.

In his speech to the crowd, Wei Jingsheng emphasized his desire to continue his support and cooperation with the Vietnamese human rights colleagues.  He emphasized two issues.  The first is to be aware of the grouping of dictatorships.  The only way we human rights activists from different countries can deal with that powerful group is to unite together.  The other is to face the fact that the dictators have learned the more successful way of offering economic incentives to pro-democracy Western countries, and to use these incentives as bait to our own people.  We must be alert and prevent them from carrying out their tricks successfully.
