Olympic Watch, Wei Jingsheng Foundation, etc. calling for
Global Tiananmen Vigil on Thursday, June 3, 2004 7:00pm

On Thursday, June 3, at 19:00 in various time zones, people around the world will light candles in their windows to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of the massacre in Beijing. This is the ambition of the Global Tiananmen Vigil, an international initiative launched today by Olympic Watch, Wei Jingsheng Foundation, Laogai Research Foundation, and China Labour Bulletin, etc. The aim is to "create a rolling light of hope … for the oppressed people in China".

During the night of June 3-4, 1989, the communist "People's Liberation Army" murdered hundreds, if not thousands, of students, workers, and other innocent Chinese people who peacefully demanded reform in the People's Republic of China. As the Chinese Communist Party continues its totalitarian rule over China, imprisoning, torturing, and executing innocent people, and mounting other human rights abuses every day, the horrendous crimes committed fifteen years ago in Beijing including the world renown Tiananmen Square, were never properly investigated and prosecuted.

TiananmenVigil.org, a web page specifically designed for the event, is being officially launched today.

Hereby, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, together with the other international human rights organizations for Chinese human rights improvement, is appealing to all of our friends and supporters to join us for this global wide event.  We thank to our international friends and allies, especially the Olympic Watch, for their long time and continuous effort for Chinese democracy and human rights.

Olympic Watch (Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games in a Free and Democratic Country) initiated this event.  It was established in Prague in 2001. Its mission is to monitor the human rights situation in the People's Republic of China in the run-up to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and to campaign to achieve improvements in the lives of the people of China.  Olympic Watch could be reached at: press@olympicwatch.org or +420-608-560-503.  More information is also available at http://www.olympicwatch.org/.

今天,为天安门事件烛光纪念会而设立的网站TiananmenVigil.org正式运行。
