Wei Jingsheng Attends the Press Conference in Observing June 4, 1989

On June 2, 2004, Reporters Without Boarders (RSF) invited Chinese democracy activists for a Press Conference in observance of the 15th anniversary of the June 4, 1989 democracy movement in China.  The press conference emphasized and called on the international society to pay attention on the fact that Chinese human rights have not be improved since 1989 and the Chinese government has intensified its control and monitoring of the news media and the Internet.

The director of the Asia-Pacific desk, Mr. Vincent Brossel, hosted the press conference.  The well-known Chinese democracy advocator, Mr. Wei Jingsheng, French human rights activist, Ms. Marie Holzman, leader of the Chinese workers' movement, Mr. CAI Chongguo, and students from the 1989 movement attended the press conference.  Also present were Multi-national news media, including AFP (French Press Agency), BBC (British Broadcasting Co.),VOA (Voice of America), and Oriental Daily of Hong Kong, etc.

Mr. Wei Jingsheng first gave a review of the heroic movement of the Chinese citizens in 1989.  He pointed out that the Chinese government has been a suppressive government all these years.  Wei asked people not to forget that this Chinese government has been continuously suppressing people's rights of expression, and the Overseas Chinese democracy advocators have continuously struggled for a democratic China.

Wei Jingsheng also listed the suppression of the Chinese government over various independent groups and organizations, as well as the media and workers and peasants' movements.  He said: "During the (former president) Jiang Zemin's era, the official suppression was more targeted at religious groups such as FaLunGong.  But now under the new leader Hu Jintao, they suppress workers, peasants and news media.  Even many official newspapers and reporters are suppressed via different means.  And they have even more strict monitoring and control over the Internet."

Regarding France's proposal to lift the European Union's ban on weapon sales to China, Wei said: "If Europe sold weapons to China, the Chinese government would use them to deal with both the opposition inside China and Taiwan.  Many European parties have considered that this is a dangerous approach."  Reporters Without Boarders also emphasized that this ban should not be lifted as long as there is no human rights improvement in China.  The weapon ban was the EU's sanction against China after the June 4 massacre in 1989.

Regarding the French government preventing the demonstration in front of the Chinese Embassy in the name of anti-terrorism, Wei Jingsheng, Marie Holzman, and Cai Chongguo all agreed that it indicated the weakness of Chirac's policy over the Chinese government.

In the statement by the Reporters Without Boarders was a long list of the terrible human rights violations by the Chinese government on the news media over the last 15 years.  RSF called on the Chinese government to release the jailed and detained reporters and Internet dissidents, as well as to take away the firewalls against June 4, 1989.

1989 student representatives Mr. ZHANG Jian and Mr. WANG Longmong also talked about their own experiences.

More interviews by various media were done afterwards.
