Wei Jingsheng Speaks at the 15th Anniversary of the June 4 Massacre in Paris
For the June 4 15th anniversary this year, Mr. Wei Jingsheng attended a series of activities in Europe. The following is a report of his participation at Paris' rally by the Central Agency.
-- -- --
(Central Agency, Paris) The Chinese democracy advocator Wei Jingsheng pointed out that the sharp conflict within Chinese society today has reached the stage of maturity for change, except the opening point. This opening point could be a sudden opportunity that may happen any time.
Wei Jingsheng participated in the rally commemorating the 15th anniversary of the 1989 TianAnMen democracy movement this evening in Paris, organized by democratic advocators in Paris. Although it was a bit chilly on this early summer night, there were more than one hundred people gathered together for more than two hours, with enthusiastic discussions and all not willing to leave. Wei Jingsheng participated for the whole event from the beginning to the end.
Wei Jingsheng said that the significance of commemorating the June 4 democracy movement is not just for the past, but also in preparation for the future push for democracy in China. So, when the next chance comes, we are better prepared for it.
He also said that the new chance will come soon. Wei Jingsheng pointed out that the social conflict has expanded further inside China, and the inequality between rich and poor has expanded as well. Many people have gotten rich via unfair approaches, which makes the conflict even worse. The condition for China to develop change is mature already, except for the opening point. This opening point could be a sudden opportunity that may happen any time.
Amnesty International, Reporters without Boarders, Tibetan democracy movement organizations, and the Chinese democratic party overseas, all participated in tonight's activity. Several French Sino-study experts also came for support and gave speeches. Sino-expert Marie Holzman, who knows many democracy advocators, asked to read the names of the democracy advocators who are still in jail. Because "their names were never publicized, the Chinese may not have heard of them yet."
