A Statement by

The headquarters of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition (OCDC)

December 14, 2004

We have just learned that Mr. LIU XiaoBo and Mr. YU Jie have just been released and have now returned to their own homes and resumed their contacts with the outside.  Both Mr. Liu and Mr. Yu  belong to the Independent Chinese Pen.  Mr. Liu is the chairman of the organization, and Mr. Yu is a board member.

We are pleased and encouraged with this latest news, and we want to thank all of you who have helped and taken corresponding action.  Especially we want to thank our friends who have informed and helped us in our efforts.  These friends include

1) members of the Independent Chinese Pen who woke us up with the latest news and urged us to take action immediately;

2) our coalition members who took the case to the persons and organizations they know;

3) our friends in the news media;

4) our friends inside China;

5) and other human rights organizations and the US State Department.

Without your prompt response and pressure applied to the Chinese government and the full speed of action during the detention hours, we are afraid that the nightmare may not have concluded so quickly within one night.

We are happy for this outcome, and we want to continue to call everyone's attention to human rights abuses in China, including the disrespect for free speech, free press and free association.  In particular, we urge our friends to keep vigilant of the possible "catch and play" games played by the Chinese government.  We continue our request for the freedom of all prisoners of conscience, including recently detained ones, such as Mr. SHI Tao, the young poet and writer.

Together, we shall overcome.
