WEI Jingsheng and Ciping HUANG Met with US State Department Officials in Regarding the Deterioration of Chinese Human Rights Condition

Ciping HUANG and WEI Jingsheng met with officials in the US State Department in two separate meetings on December 17 and December 20 on behalf of the Chinese democracy advocates inside China.  The meetings regarded the deterioration of the Chinese human rights condition, and urged the US government to be alert, take action and apply pressure on the Chinese government.  They were arranged because of our common concern that the recent detention and harassment of several dissidents in China are just the beginnings of new waves of crackdown by the Chinese Communist government.  As the long holiday season related to Christmas and the New Year has arrived, concerns were raised that the new suppression could slip by without enough and immediate international attention and outcry.

In the meeting between Ms. Ciping Huang and Ms. Rana Siu, the foreign affairs officer for Northeast Asia and China, Ms. Huang briefed Ms. Siu on the current human rights status in China and the recent detentions and harassments pro-democracy and human rights activists have received and might yet receive.  She provided a list of names and details to be paid attention to.

In the meeting between Mr. Wei Jingsheng and Mr. Michael Kozak, the Acting Assistant Secretary of State in charge of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, both agreed that the human rights condition in China is getting worse and firm actions and stands need to be taken, as well as a further cooperation for immediate reaction and actions.

The one hour long conversation between Wei and Kozak went through several topics; in particular about the current status of Chinese human rights condition, what action the US State Department could take, enhanced cooperation in the future, and the planning for the next year’s Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland.
