Note from the Editor:
Dear friends,
Thanks to concerned and caring friends, we were offered the following news from Norway that Mr. Wei Jingsheng has been nominated for the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. Although we had already leaned of the nomination earlier through private channels, nevertheless, to read the report and to receive the encouragement from our friends always brings a great sense of confidence, progress and unity.
According to our limited knowledge, since 1992 Mr. Wei Jingsheng has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize all the times. So this year is the 14th year now. To my knowledge, some people have been nominating Mr. Wei every year since the beginning of the 21st century because they believe that the real foundation for a peaceful century must be the realization of freedom and democracy in China, with nearly one quarter of the world population. That wish is not just the wish of Chinese, but also the rest of the world. And the sacrifice, devotion and contribution of Mr. Wei who has won the nickname of "Father of Chinese Democracy" surely does not just have the recognition of his countrymen, but also the world.
There were times, especially when I was driving on lonely, dark and cold nights with a hundred miles ahead of me, I could relate to the weight, the chilliness with a sense of desperation, of our suppressed Chinese inside China. Nevertheless, the encouragement of the world communities, especially the human rights and democracy colleagues, strengthen our beliefs and enhance our efforts on this torturous road for a bright future. The news of Mr. Wei being nominated again for the Nobel Peace Prize should give all of us another chance of spiritual lift, for it is not just about Mr. Wei the individual, but the recognition of the international society which gives encouragement to all our fellow Chinese people through the nomination of Mr. Wei.
We want to take this opportunity to thank these friends who have nominated Wei in the last 14 years, as well as the friends who informed and related this news. Your pride is our pride, for we share the same goal.
Ciping Huang

World: Record number of nominations for 2005 Nobel Peace Prize
Friday, February 25, 2005
[World News]: OSLO - Ukraine's new President Viktor Yuschenko, British aid agency Oxfam and Pope John Paul II were reported to be among the record number of individuals and groups nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize.
In all, 199 nominations will be considered for the 2005 Peace Prize after additions this week by the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee, Norwegian public broadcaster NRK reported on Thursday evening.
Thirty-three groups and organisations will compete with 166 individual nominees including former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, famed musician Ravi Shankar of India, Russian human rights activist Sergei Kovalyov, and Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng, NRK said.
Previous nominees like former Czech president Vaclav Havel, Israeli nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu, and Bono of the rock group U2 were also listed.
Several nominated organisations aided victims of the December 26 tsunami disaster in South Asia, including British-based Oxfam and Save the Children.
The previous record of 194 nominations was set last year when environmental campaigner Wangari Maathai of Kenya won, becoming the first African woman to win the award which she received on December 10 in the Norwegian capital.
Parliamentarians, academics, former peace prize laureates as well current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee have the right to nominate candidates.
Earlier this week, the Nobel Committee held its first meeting after the February 1 deadline and added 33 names. The numbers will be trimmed to a shortlist of a dozen names the committee will consider during the year.
The committee that selects the final winner advises nominators not to announce their proposals. However, there are no rules against the procedure allowing plenty of speculation before the announcement, normally in mid October.
