Ms. XIA Ze Delivers Speech at the 61st United Nations' Human Rights Commission on behalf of the June 4 victims and families
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen!
I am very glad to be given this opportunity to speak today regarding the human rights issue in China, especially as related to my family.
Although it is heart-rending to recall what happpened to my cousin, WANG Nan, 15 years ago on 4 June 1989, near Tiananmen Square, I feel I am so lucky to be able to tell people outside China what the real human rights situation in China has been. There are so many people inside China whose basic human rights including freedom of speech have been deprived.
Although WANG Nan was 14 years younger than I, we were very close to each other because my family and his family used to live just around corner from each other. He left home around 11pm on the 3rd of June with a camera, innocently hoping to take some pictures of a historical moment. He walked towards Tiananmen Square from the west of Beijing City. It was early in the morning of the 4th of June 1989. He saw People's Liberation Army soldiers opening fire. He was shocked and took out his camera. Soldiers saw this. They opened fire on him. While he was in Nanchang Street, near Tiananmen Square, a bullet entered his left forehead and came out from the back of his head. As he lay on the ground, his breathing became laboured. Blood poured from his head. Local residents saw him and panicked. They tried to approach him but were stopped by soldiers carrying guns. One soldier shouted, "He is a rebel. Don't come forward!" Becoming angry, someone questioned why, but heard soldiers' shouting: "If anyone dares to come forward, we will open fire to kill you first." They all begged the soldiers. A lady over 70 years old even knelt down begging; "He is only a young boy, a student. Please don't let him die!" Suddenly they heard the noise of an ambulance and thought that hope had arrived. But after doctors came out of the vehicle it became clear that they had not been allowed to carry out their duties. The doctors left.
A second vehicle arrived. After negotiations soldiers reported to their commander who eventually agreed to try to save the boy. But it was too late. At about 3 o'clock in the early morning, 19-years-old WANG Nan stopped breathing. Doctors issued a death certificate, which they left in the young man's pocket. They were then forced by the PLA to leave. A kind, thoughtful man who was a member of the United Casualty Team formed by some volunteers and medical staff to deal with this emergency, took his student card and house keys. From the student card the man found WANG Nan's school and traced his parents who, with the help of other family members and friends, had been searching the whole city for Nan. The man broke the awful news of their youngest son to WANG Nan's parents and described what he had witnessed.
At 7am on the morning of the 4th of June, a satellite was going to pass over. Therefore, the dead bodies had to be cleared in order to prevent the satellite taking pictures of them. Three bodies including WANG Nan's were buried in a hurry beneath a lawn outside a school near Tiananmen Square. It was a hot, wet day. After the rain the loosened soil sank down and some parts of those buried bodies stuck out. Local people started digging them up. WANG Nan's body was found. Because he was in an old army uniform, the authorities were not sure whether he was a soldier. They decided not to take his body away but the other two bodies were taken for immediate cremation because they had no ID attached. 10 days later WANG Nan's parents were called to identify the body after police had contacted his school.
His parents asked for an immediate funeral and cremation, but were refused. The reason given was that he was a rebel even though his school and local community centre issued certificates to say he was a good boy. His parents approached some Non-Governmental Organisations. With their involvement, the authorities finally, and only after long negotiations, agreed to cremate his body and hold a funeral.
The funeral was on the 26th of June 1989. His parents and family members went to a funeral hall where his body and the bodies of others were being held before cremation. The funeral hall was packed with people. The majority of them were family members or friends of students killed on or near Tiananmen Square on the 4th June 1989.
For nearly 15 years his mother, my aunt, ZHANG Xian Ling, has been actively seeking justice for her son's death. However, what she received has been monitoring, restricted movement, house arrest and arrest:
Even on the 4th of June 2004, the 15th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, she and her husband were going to Wanan Public Cemetery but were stopped by the Chinese police. After a long negotiation, they were allowed to proceed. They arrived around 11am. No one from the other 5 victims' families was there. The original plan had been that they were to get together to mark the anniversary at the Cemetery. When asked why they were not allowed the get-together which had taken place every year since 1990, the police said that it was due to "an order from above" and that the situation was complicated this particular year because there were foreign reporters around. My aunt and her husband were to offer flowers to the deceased and read a statement on behalf of the other 5 families. Later, my aunt found out that the parents of YUAN Li and the sister of DUAN Chang Long were only allowed to go to the Cemetery separately from my aunt and her husband that morning. Whether or not the other 3 families (of GUO Chun Min, YANG Yan Sheng and YANG Ming Hu) had been allowed remains unknown.
From Thursday, 27 May to Friday 28 May 2004 my aunt was told not to leave her house by the Chinese police. No reason was given. One of the police officers who were on duty outside my aunt's flat said "We have been here since last night"..I don't want to be here but I have no choice - just carrying out orders from above." My aunt said, "Later someone told me that yesterday (Thursday) some people had been arrested and beaten while making appeals outside the High Procuratorate. I think the reason I was forbidden to go out was because they (the Chinese authorities) did not want us (Tiananmen Mothers) to go to the High Procuratorate. It was to prevent me making an appeal. If I had made an appeal, it would have drawn attention from the international community which the authorities are scared of. Actually I was planning to go to the High Procuratorate to find out the result of our lawsuit against LI Peng, which was filed 5 years ago but I was not able to do it on that day."
On 28 March 2004 my aunt was arrested together with Ms DING Zi Lin and HUANG Jin Ping by the Chinese authorities. All three are members of the "Tiananmen Mothers" movement. The reason given for their arrest was that someone outside China had sent them some T-shirts with the words "1989 - 2004" and "Tiananmen Mothers" printed on them. My aunt was told that if anyone wore those T-shirts it would be regarded as harming Chinese national security. After 6 days in detention, my aunt was released. Before she was released she was forced to write a statement.
Officials of the Chinese Xinhua News Agency used the statement and said in a report sent to overseas media that the arrested women admitted doing something illegal. After my aunt was released I managed to speak to her and she told me, "This (Xinhua News Agency report) is not true. It is a complete lie. We have done nothing illegal."
In January 2005, ZHAO Zi Yang passed away. ZHAO was the General Secretary and Prime Minister when the Tiananmen Square massacre happened. He was against the idea to open fire to the students. He was put under house arrest for 15 years. My aunt wanted to say good-bye to Mr. ZHAO and has given a negative reference for people who are allowed to enter the activities. However, this time she and her husband were monitored and followed by officers, even when they went shopping. On the day they were ordered to stay home, i.e. not allowed to go out.
Nearly 16 years have past since the Tiananmen Square massacre. The Tiananmen Mothers have been seeking justice since they lost their loved ones. Dear friends, think about this. If one of the victims was your son, daughter, wife, husband or other members of the family, wouldn't you be eager to know the truth of their deaths? But the Tiananmen Mothers have still not found it. As WANG Nan's father said with a broken heart, "The (Chinese) authority has been really unreasonable. We have lost our beloved son but they have never left us alone: they not only harassed us but also arrested my wife and even twisted the story!" Dear friends, if you were WANG Nan's father what would you feel now?
We have all known for years that the Chinese Communist Party has been making dictatorship part of the Chinese culture and using military force to carry it out. Please help the "Tiananmen Mothers", please help to expose the crimes of Chinese Communist Party committed to kill innocent people!
Thank you.
