Summary of the of the "June 4" 16th Anniversary Commemoration Activities by the Korean Chapter of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition (OCDC)

-- Submitted by the Korean Chapter of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition

Chairman, Secretary-General, Deputy Secretary-General, and Executive

Committee Members:

This year's "Commemorating 16th Anniversary of June 4" event, sponsored by the Korean Chapter of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition (OCDC), had some differences from the past.  One is that there were many more members than before, from 10 members last year to over 120 this year.  Another is that during the commemoration activities, based on suggestions from the OCDC headquarters, the Korean Chapter made extensive alliances with other organizations.  The Korean edition of the Epoch Times newspaper, the New Tang Dynasty television station and organizations of refugees from North Korea worked hand-in-hand with us for the first time, commemorating together with us the Chinese peoples' great democratic movement.  The commemoration activities went from June 2 to June 6, encompassing five days in total.

The Korean Chapter, acting in spirit of the notice titled "Notice in Regard to Cooperating to Jointly Commemorate the 16th Anniversary of the June 4 Massacre" sent out by the Coalition's headquarters, reports a summary of its commemoration events as following.

In order to avoid having the Korean Chapter's June 4 commemoration activities and protests in front of the Chinese consulate in Seoul fall on a Saturday, we set the commemoration activities to June 3.  In order for us to do well in this year's commemoration events, Mr. XIANG Lin, the Asian Continental Chair of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition arrived in Korea on June 1 and participated in the June 4 commemoration activities.

At 3PM on June 2, the 120 members of the Korean Chapter conducted a simulation commemoration event at the Chinese Christian Church in Seoul.  Mr. XIANG Lin, Pastor Cui and Mr. WU Zhenrong, the director of the Korea Chapter, delivered speeches.

At 11AM sharp on June 3, the 120 members all arrived at the Chinese consulate in Seoul, beginning the commemoration events by shouting slogans demanding the Chinese government to overrule its verdict on the June 4 democracy movement.  The members all wore the same white T-shirt that the Korean Chapter specially made for this year's event.  The white T-shirt had printed on it "Korean Chapter of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition" and "Commemorating the 16th Anniversary of the June 4" written in red letters.  They held up banners and posters, and in a solemn and peaceful manner began the commemoration activities.

Mr. DENG Yunbi, the deputy director of the Korea Chapter, hosted the protest rally.  Xiang Lin, representing Mr. WEI Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, made an impromptu speech on "Why we want to commemorate June 4".  He expounded on June 4's meaning and significance towards the Chinese democracy movement.  Wu Zhenrong read the "June 4 Statement and Letter of Appeal", appealing to the Korean government and people to support the Chinese democracy movement.  At the commemoration meeting, Deng Yunbi read the June 4 tribute article provided by the Coalition headquarters this year titled "June 4: A History Forged with Blood, and the Still-Burning Hope of 1989".  At the Rally, FaLunGong practitioner Ms. Tao read out the 1989 college student's "Hunger Strike Declaration", and at the end read the Korean Chapter-composed "Open Letter to Chinese Communist Secretary-General Hu Jintao".  During the rally, 18 media organizations came to do on-the-scene interviews.  We also handed out thousands of fliers and other literature.

Acting on instructions from the Headquarters of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, we worked hand-in-hand with people from all walks of life during this year's commemorating June 4 events.  Not only did we extend our influence in

Korea, through the event we also got to know many supporters and Chinese friends who live in Korea.  After the large-scale commemoration and protest events that we held in front of the Chinese consulate in Seoul on June 3, we held another large-scale commemorative rally on the night of June 4, along with the Korean edition of the Epoch Times, the New Tang Dynasty television station, and organizations of North Korean refugees.  The entitled "Don't Forget June 4" commemorative rally was held at the Yuanhu Park in Anshan city, an area with a large Chinese population.

Yuanhu park is in the busy district of Anshan city, and is the central location for culture and living for both the Korean people and ethnic Chinese living in Korea.  Thus by having our June 4 commemoration events at this location we attracted many people of all different ages and got the results we had anticipated, having those Korean people who pay attention to China understand the truth and the spirit of June 4 more deeply, which also gave great inspiration and confidence to our Chinese compatriots living in Korea.  Through our series of June 4 events we led more people to learn that the Chinese democracy movement hasn't died under the CCP's butcher knife and had them more clearly recognize the prospects of Chinese democracy in the future.

At 5PM on June 4, Coalition headquarters' Executive Committee member, Mr. XIANG Lin who came to Korea to direct the events, led the Korean Chapter's Chapter director, deputy director and a few Chapter leaders in the subway to Anshan to meet with Anshan branch members.  Mr. Xiang Lin visited everyone and arranged the contents for a commemoration evening event.  At 7:30 PM, the commemoration event formally began.  At the event, we played the New Tang Dynasty television station's June 4 documentary program, narrated by two broadcasters.  The Korean Epoch Times reporter Ms. TAO Qiong read the May 13, 1989 "Declaration of a Hunger Strike", by college students who went on hunger strike that day.   The listeners could not help but be moved to tears.  Gao Dexi, representative for the North Korean refugee organizations, also published a commemorative article, exposing and sharply critiquing the violence of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).  Members of the meeting felt roused to action, as the voices of those calling for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to redress June 4 and to rectify its stance on the matter rose throughout the meeting.  The phrase "never forget" reverberated throughout Anshan's night sky.

Director Wu Zhenrong, representing the Korean Chapter, spoke at the meeting about "Why we want to commemorate June 4."  In the speech he reviewed the Korean Chapter's progress in commemorating June 4 over the last 3 years, expressing his hope that the Korean Chapter's commemorating June 4 as a turning point for pushing forward a resurgence in the Chinese democracy movement.  He said that in 2003 only three people in Korea met on June 4 to protest the CCP's violence.  Those people, who identify themselves with the ancient Chinese history as the lonesome heroes who ultimately reached their victory, opened the gate for Chinese in Korea to commemorate June 4.  In 2004, 11 people participated in June 4 events; this year, the number surged to 120, not to mention the over 1000 people that participated in this commemoration evening event.  We can see that the great news of China's democratization through these channels is spreading rapidly throughout the world, making known to all the Chinese people that the blood spilled on June 4, 1989, will ultimately bring a democratic and free New China.

Amidst enthusiastic applauses, Xiang Lin spoke at the event, representing Chairman Wei Jingsheng from the Coalition headquarters.  He said, "When I came to Korea, Chairman Wei wanted us to send a message to all broad-minded people in Korea's government and society and to our Chinese compatriots living in Korea: the June 4 participants' blood was not spilled in vain, and the Chinese democracy movement, through people's widely spreading the news of June 4, will definitely cause an upsurge of interest in the movement".  He said, "Just as the Korean people will never forget the Kwangju Massacre, we will not forget the June 4 Massacre."  He also pointed out the shocking similarities between the two tragedies.  On May 18, 1980, the Kwangju Massacre shocked the world.  Nine years later, the June 4 massacre occurred.  Both governments used their regular armies to publicly open fire on students and citizens who demanded democracy, causing a large amount of civilian casualties.  These two massacres were the two most barbaric events of the 1980's.  Yet after the Kwangju Massacre, the Korean people fought for the next 7 years to get Korea on a normal track towards democratization, and now May 18 has become Korea's "Democratization Memorial Day."  We believe that China will also soon be this way, and that the date that the Chinese people will never forget - June 4 - will soon become China's "Democratization Memorial Day."  We believe that this day is not far off and through the diligent efforts of the Chinese people will soon arrive.

Through this evening event we got to know many FaLunGong friends and other friends in Korea who support the Chinese democracy movement.  This friendship will help us to built a strong foundation for a multifaceted political platform with many different sources for us to demand democracy and freedom.

At around 10:40PM, the memorial evening event ended in a solemn atmosphere. After the event, we set June 6 as the date to go together with our friends from the Korean edition of the Epoch Times to the memorial grounds of the Kwangju Massacre to commemorate those martyrs sacrificed for the cause of democracy.

The way in which this event was put together made everyone quite satisfied.  Much credit goes to Mr. Xiang Lin, who participated in the June 2 preparation meeting, giving us an enthusiastic pre-talk, setting out a path for the next step in our Chapter's development, and encouraging everyone.  He also went many times to our office and to the church to talk freely together with our members, to understand our circumstances, and also to give guidance in a timely manner.  At the same time he did a lot of work to help us mediate political relationships in Korea.

This time if we had to give our June 4 commemoration events a characteristic, it would be that they started early, and that we used the events as a special opportunity to develop the democratic forces in Korea.  As early as February 22, the Chapter formulated a bold and active plan to use the June 4 events to develop our membership.  While developing the membership we spread news of June 4, and with the spirit of the 1989 democracy movement pushed forward the development of the Korean Chapter.  We originally planned to develop our membership to 80 members by June 4, but we've already surged to over 120 people.  At the time of the 2003 June 4 events, we only had 3 members, in 2004 we had 10, so from the scale of our June 4 events over the years we can see the development of our Chapter.

We believe that next year's June 4 events will be carried out even better and more successfully.

Supplement note by Mr. Xiang Lin, the Asian Continental Chair of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition:

The devotion of Chapter Director Mr. WU Zhenrong, Deputy Director Mr. DENG Yunbi and other backbone members of the chapter are very closely related to the success of the Korea Chapter of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition.  Both Wu and Deng, for the sake of developing the organization over the last two or three years, have been almost unable to work, relying on instant noodles every day for sustenance.  Even if there are members that give them some funds for living expenses, they would put this money in the accounting books of the Chapter offices.  This spirit is what the democracy movement organizations should promote and carry on.
