Late in the spring, I received a vacation offering from my brother. As a much needed rest, I was looking forward for a relaxed week at the Southern tip of Baja California in Mexico. Nevertheless, my retreat became an unprepared advantage that almost took my life.
The journey had a bumpy start as I was refused boarding on the airplane to Mexico. The airline staff did not recognize the document I had when I arrived in Los Angeles from the East Coast，and thus refused me to enter Mexico. Determined not to let the staff's ignorance ruin my vacation, I rented a car at the airport and drove across the boarder toward my destination more than 1,000 miles away. It was a beautiful drive with mountains covered with spring flowers and desert cactus in all formation and colors. Unfortunately, a lonely Oriental woman on the road caused more than unneeded suspicions at the check points by military troops, and unlike highways in the United States, it was such a rugged mountain road without shoulders most of time. On the roadside, especially near cliffs, there were hundreds of crosses associated with deadly accidents. As a matter of fact, I personally observed one of the deadly accidents as the Mexican police covered the face of the newly deceased with a cloth. It was a shocking scene as I was only 2 yards away from him.
Although this difficult roundtrip of more than 2200 miles effectively cut my vacation time in half, I still wanted to enjoy my time at this land's end. That day, I went snorkeling in a beautiful half moon cove and mistakenly swam into the edge and was pulled down by undercurrent. As I lost my breath and drank more salty water than needed, I started to sink hopelessly and for one moment I looked around and even thought: "What a beautiful place to die."
As I struggled, I recalled a good swimmer nearby - when I walked away from the beach; this stranger was putting a lifesaver on his girlfriend and told me that he was a very good swimmer himself. As I barely called out help, he immediately recognized the trouble and came to rescue. After I resumed my breath with his help, he put his arm around me and gave me the needed lift and strength until I arrived to safety.
No words could express my thankfulness for his rescue. Yet, when I sincerely thanked him, he answered: "I am a surfer and had a few encounters of my own. I fully comprehend what you suffered. I did not do that much, even though it means your life."
Since then, I have often compared my own experience with what I run into daily nowadays. On this rugged road to Chinese freedom and democracy, there is so much casualty and desperation that the freedom fighters and their families have to suffer. Nevertheless, a small effort and help from others means just as a great a deal to these individuals both psychologically and in reality, as that stranger who saved my life. One person and one organization might have little effect, but all of us together could make our goal of survival and victory both closer and sooner.
We are publishing 4 cases that we call to your attention, and ask your support. More information is and will be available on our website at www.weijingsheng.org as well as in the Chinese section of this release. In case of need, we can supply you with more detailed and the most updated information. Although these 4 cases are just the tip of the iceberg of the many cases we have received, we call for your attention, response, and action. We hope these actions will be helpful for these people who are under extreme difficulty. You may pass the information on and reach out to help, or contact these people directly, or we could forward your regards and support to them. To our knowledge, some of you have already responded to our previous private requests and pitched in to help on these cases, along with others. Hereby, we express our gratitude altogether.

Case 1: Zhang Lin's Trial in June Was Delayed, More International Help Needed
Mr. ZHANG Lin, a long time democracy advocator who has been advocating free expression and paying attention to the workers' movement, was detained in January 2005. He was formally charged last February and was put on trial in June, mainly for the articles and poems he wrote and published. However, his trial was delayed and many believed that was due to international attention and pressure, including the visit by the US Secretary of State Rice to China and attention from some European countries and human rights organizations. To help Mr. ZHANG Lin, we need continued attention and pressure from the international society.
Mr. Zhang Lin organized student protests during the 1989 democracy movement, and then was put in jail for 2 years. In 1994, he was sentenced to "re-education through labor camp" for his effort to organize the Alliance for Workers' Rights in Beijing. After he was released to the USA in 1997, he returned to China for democracy activities in 1998 and subsequently put into "re-education through labor camp" for another 3 years.

Case 2: Human Rights Defender Mr. REN WanDing is Very Ill
The human rights defender Mr. REN WanDing has been in the hospital and suffers with great pain from tuberculosis in his bones. He urgently needs an operation to replace his eroded bones, which will cost 70,000 Yuan and a need to stay in the hospital for about 40 days. Nevertheless, this operation has been delayed because of his incapacity to pay for the operation fee, along with the other medical costs. Humanitarian aid is desperately needed.
Ren was born in 1944. He initiated and took charge of the Alliance for Chinese Human Rights during the 1978 to 1979 democracy wall movement for which he was sentenced to "re-education through labor camp" for 4 years. After the release, he received 7 more years for continued democracy activities. In 1994, he received an award from the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial for his human rights work. He was active in establishing the Chinese Democracy Party in 1998 and 1999.

Case 3: Mr. HAN Hua (pen name: LI Min) under House Arrest
On June 30, democracy advocator Mr. HAN Hua was arrested in TianJin by about 40 secret police from the National Security Bureau. His computer and printer were confiscated. He was thrown into a jail cell with 20 some death row inmates during the detention. He was beaten there and lost one tooth. During the interrogation, the Chinese authorities insisted on learning of his association with the Wei Jingsheng Foundation's HUANG Ciping and other associations. However, one week later, due to severe illness, he was released but has been under house arrest without basic rights.
Mr. HAN's main "crime" was to publish articles advocating human rights and democracy for China, which included distributing the "June 4 Human Rights Newspaper" and "An Open Letter Calling for my Fellow Chinese People" on the Internet and elsewhere under the pen name LI Min. Mr. HAN's family wishes the Wei Jingsheng Foundation would help to persuade international society to put his case on priority and to urge the Chinese government to stop the persecution against him.

Case 4: Democracy Advocator Mr. XU WanPing Facing trial:
On May 4, the democracy activist in ChongQing Mr. XU WanPing was arrested. Currently, he is waiting for trial and we are calling the international society and human rights organizations to pay close attention on this case.
Since the 1989 democracy movement in China, Xu has been actively advocating Chinese democracy and human rights and was well liked by his democracy advocator fellows. Since his arrest along with the search of his home and the confiscation by the police afterwards, his family has lost both hope and means of survival. He has a wife and a young son of 7 years old.

呼吁国际社会关注中国大陆民运人士的现况（四例）

春天时，我接受了我弟弟的一个邀请去墨西哥下加州的最南端度假一周，然而本当轻松的休假却成了惊险之旅。先是我自东部抵达洛杉矶转机时航空公司的工作人员不识我的证件拒绝我登机进入墨西哥境内。我一怒之下，在机场租了辆车长驱直入墨西哥，开往那一千六百多公里以外的目的地。山路崎岖而美丽，然而在漫山遍野的野花与仙人掌之间，悬崖边还有数以百计的十字架标志着因车祸而丧生的生命。（事实上，我还就遇上了一起，那位男士刚刚去世，当我开车从离他只有两米的地方经过的时候，警察正将他的脸用布蒙上。）
这个超过3，500公里的来回耗去了我一半的假期。如同世界上其它的地方，路上军队的管卡对我这个单身夜行的东方女子疑心又不放心。经过千难万险，好不容易到了天涯海角的那一端，迎接我的却是一个差点要了我的命的事故。
那一天，我在通气潜水时误入禁区，被暗流拖入水下。等我从中挣扎出来，已呛了好几口海水。当时，无望地看着碧水蓝天，不由闪过一念：“想不到会死在这么美丽的地方。”然而求生的欲望使我挺住了，并及时地反应到一个我碰巧路过并向我自称水性很好的陌生人一定在附近并向他呼救。果然他给了我及时地帮助，并托着筋疲力尽了的我到达安全处。
当我感谢他的时候，他告诉我，他酷爱冲浪，也有过类似的险情。“其实对他人是举手之劳，但却可以救一条命啊！”他很平静地说。
这些天来，我常常将这不平凡的一周与中国的民主相类比。通往中国民主的道路崎岖而又危险，多少民主斗士与他们的家庭在危难中挣扎着。如果大家能做一点，就可以帮其中的一些度过大难。如果大家都多做一点，我们就有望尽快地达到我们的目标。很多人也许是陌生人，但我们的目标不都是相同的吗？
此篇从众多的事件中选择四例，望大家予以关怀。

案例之一: 安徽蚌埠中院审理张林案，需更多的国际关注与压力
(自由亚洲电台记者燕明采访报导) 安徽省蚌埠市的中级法院星期二开庭审理了当地异议人士张林涉嫌颠覆国家政权的案子。不过，法庭没有立即宣读判决结果。虽然庭审是公开进行，但不少打算旁听此案异议人士却被拒之门外。
张林今年二月被当地警方以涉嫌扰乱社会秩序罪逮捕，后被指控颠覆国家政权，星期二，蚌埠市中级人民法院开庭审理该案，张林的妻子芳草星期二下午对记者表示，审理进行了将近三个小时，从早上八点半开始到十一点十五分结束，法官表示，由于案情重大，将提交蚌埠市中级人民法院审判委员会讨论决定，宣判日期另订----
芳草：有三、四十个人旁听，家属只占三位，我和他的母亲还有他的妹妹。
记者：你看到他了是吧？
芳草：对，他的精神状态从表面上看还可以，但是瘦了好多，然后脸色也不像以前那么好看了，蜡黄的，有可能瘦的缘故吧。
记者：他也看到你了吗？
芳草：对，我的心情当然......讲不上来那种感觉，心里很酸楚的那种感觉，看他的样子，真的情不自禁的落泪了。
芳草说，虽然是公开审理，但并不是每一个关心张林的人士都能出席旁听，警方严格限制旁听人数，包括张林的父亲也未能出席，蚌埠另一位独立异见人士王庭金被拒之门外，他告诉记者----
王庭金：本来预计有几十个人，包括本市的，还有外地的，有二、三十人吧，到最后只有十几个人到了法院门口。其他地方的人，本来要到蚌埠来的呢，都是在当地就已经被安全部门控制了，不让他们走动，像李海他们本来都准备过来，具体姓名现在在这边可能不太方便透露，我们最后到蚌埠来的只有三个。
根据蚌埠市检察院的指控，2003年下半年以来，张林在网上发表一百九十二篇文章，起诉书指控其中六篇文章，加上一篇希望之声的采访，有近五百个词句被认为有煽动颠覆国家政权的内容，张林的律师莫少平为张林作的是无罪辩护，芳草引述他在庭上辩护说----
芳草：律师为他做无罪辩护，他说断章取义，从一百九十二篇文章选出六篇，四百四十九个字，没有足够证据，不能认为当事人主观意志要推翻国家政权，张林写文章的主要动机是推进社会主义民主政治。
记者：莫少平为张林作了充分的辩护吗？
芳草：对对对。
据悉，张林在庭上前后共做了半个小时的自辩，芳草引述他的话说----
芳草：张林讲他发表文章，第一个是主要是个人的观点，第二个是赚点稿费，还有就是希望通过发表个人的观点吧，可以推进社会主义民主。
张林在八九民运中，曾经组织领导了安徽蚌埠学生中的绝食活动，被以反革命宣传煽动罪判刑两年，1994年他在北京参与筹办劳动者权利保障同盟民运活动，劳教三年，1997年获释后到美国，1998年他返回中国从事民运，被警察抓补，并被以偷渡和所谓的嫖妓罪劳教三年，今年年初张林从蚌埠到北京，试图参加已故中央总书记赵紫阳的追悼会，之后他返回家乡蚌埠市，被警方逮捕。

案例之二：人权斗士任畹町病情恶化亟待救助
【大纪元7月6日讯】（大纪元记者冯长乐采访报导）7月6日下午，记者从北京得到消息，著名人权民主活动家任畹町先生患骨结核病情恶化，在极度痛苦中挣扎。因家境贫困，其妻张凤颖无法筹措到7万元的手术费而一筹莫展，亟待人道救助。
任畹町之妻张凤颖在受访时哭诉道：“今天我带他到北京结核病医院就医，医生确诊为骨结核，要马上做换骨手术。需做换骨手术的部位是右胯骨，那里有一块骨头已经烂了，截掉后必须换骨，手术住院需40天，手术费用要7万左右。”
“然后回家卧床三个月，继续吃药就医一年半到两年，结核菌才能消除。他现在非常痛苦，吃不好、睡不好，我盼着给他早点手术，解除他的痛苦。现在他不能坐，只能躺着，因为没钱，也不能使用止痛针或药物，他已经痛得受不了了。”
张凤颖说：“三个多月前任畹町住进北京263医院，一家军方的医院，医院没诊断出他的病，手术后到现在三个月了，伤口一直不愈合，每天流脓血。现在他的背部有个很大的窟窿，往外冒脓，胯骨部位糜烂，深及至骨，4-5厘米。这两个创面大夫看到都吃惊，让他承受很大的痛苦，人很消瘦。前期的治疗已经花去一万多元，也没给治好。
“我从网上看到这个病可能是结核病，就带他去北京朝阳医院和结核病医院检查，大夫都诊断是骨结核病，还很厉害，耽误太久了。目前他需要转院到北京结核病医院去，费用更大。光是交一万元的住院押金我都发愁，哪去筹措呀，都是民运穷朋友，哪个有钱呀，我不能跟他们张嘴呀。就是给也是杯水车薪，我不能连累他们。一个人为自己活着就没有意思了，应该时时刻刻想到别人。这些治疗费用对我而言负担太沉重了，我真是没有办法呀。”
张凤颖说：“听到医生说结核，我吓了一大跳。平日里，我觉得我们离结核病很遥远的，怎么这个病就在眼前呢，医生说造成这种情况是因为他长期的营养不良、劳累、体质下降、免疫力下降有关。结核病治疗起来比较复杂，因为副作用很大，吃治疗结核药的同时还得吃保护肝脏的药……我以前以为他的病有1-2万元可能就治疗好了，没想到需要那么多钱！”
“我今天坐在医院等检验结果就想，他真是生为民运，死也是为民运。为了民运，他已经耗干了他的一切，两次坐牢，79年判4年，91年判7年。11年坐牢，出来后从不后悔，而且更坚定，他每天都是分秒必争，一天当几天的使。从监狱回来他身体就一直不好，体质下降，需要营养，可是家里没有生活来源，生活贫苦。家里有困难他从不跟别人讲起，他常对我说，比我们困难的人还大有人在。民运人的生活就是如此……”
“他把整个身心都投入到民运建设和书写民运理论上去了，不停的写作，整天坐在电脑前，熬夜，有的时候只睡几个小时。他从不说假话，就是埋头苦干，为民运事业舍尽了他的所有。现在他是积劳成疾，油耗尽了，连骨头都烂了呀。他已经坐不住了，腰背都痛，躺在床上，爬不起来。想到这些我很难过。我们有一点钱的时候，我们就帮助比我们困难的朋友，给个路费呀，给点生活费呀，我们认为这样做是应该的。老任经常对我说：金钱买不了人的意志。为民运事业献身，金钱是买不动的。他为民运已经付出了20多年了。”
“他住263医院，我陪着他，我们两个人每天的伙食费用是10元，他的饭量很少，每顿饭就一两样主食，加一个素菜。医院也供应很多好菜，可我们吃不起。我们也不看重别人吃的好，我们是为民运奉献，我们甘心过这样的日子。”
“以往任畹町经常感到身体不适，有点病都扛过去了，忍过去了。腰背疼痛加重，是从年初紫阳去世的时候开始的，一天晚上他疼痛难忍，我要带他去瞧病。可是我家大门被公安用警车顶住，不让我们出门，不让我们就医，24小时监控我们。如果那个时候及时去大医院检查，可能早就治愈了，给耽误了。后来公安带我们来到一个村卫生所去看，那里卫生条件很差，扎了针灸后，就回来了，也没有解决疼痛的问题。那个时候他就开始做轮椅了……”
当问及张凤颖是否可以提供一个银行帐号给海外的朋友时，张凤颖告诉记者，她家根本没有存款，所以没有任何可提供的银行帐号。
张凤颖说：“因为投身民运，工作受到影响，现在每个月退休金只有560元。跟低保一样。可是很多民运人士连这点钱都没有。”
北京民运人士呼吁海外同胞、人权组织、民运组织等关注任畹町的现状，尽快给予人道救助。
任畹町简介
． 任畹町，江苏人，1944年生于经济学者家庭。
． 1966：年肄业于北京建筑工程学院。
． 1978～79：参加民主墙运动；起草《中国人权宣言》；组建“中国人权同盟”，
任负责人；被劳教4年。
． 1989：发动“政体改造”民主运动；发起纪念民主墙10周年运动。
． 1991.2.8：在法庭上作题为《89民主改革与主权在民──驳反革命煽动罪》的辩护
演讲，在法庭上继续以宣传煽动“罪恶重大，拒不悔罪”处刑7年。
． 1994：获罗伯特．甘迺迪人权奖，被誉为人权民主活动家。
． 1998.11.7-10：创议组建中国民主党全国筹备委员会。
． 1999.12.26：参与组创中国民主党联合委员会，任顾委主席。

案例之三：天津异议人士韩华(化名李民)在天津家中被中国国家安全局逮捕
曾在中国民间和互联网上发表过<<六四人权报>> <<告全国同胞书>>等民主文章的天津异议人士韩华(化名李民),于２００５年６月３０日早上九点在天津家中被中国国家安全局逮捕．罪名是造谣.诽谤.煽动颠覆国家政权．由于患有严重疾病于一周后以监视居住的的名义被释放．现在处于国家安全局监视当中．
被捕当天早上派出所警察来到他家中询问户籍资料的情况．在确定他在家之后，就回去了．仅三分多钟后约４０名身着便衣的男子，就堵住了他家门口，挤满了整个楼道．并进入家中将他用于出版报纸用的电脑.打印机等物悉数没收．并逮捕了他．于当日对他进行了审讯．
在看守所中，面对国安局的威逼利诱，韩华和他们进行了激烈的辩论，愤怒的和安全警察拍桌子，以至于拍伤了自己得的手．他们直截了当的问：你和黄慈萍，林岳洋，古季柔是什麽关系关系？韩华当即回答：她们是我的战友！一名负责他案子的国安局姓刘的处长说：＂干了这麽多年多年没见过你这麽横的！你不愧是布什的兵呀，如果他看到你这样一定会为你竖起大拇指的！＂由于韩华态度强硬，他被和２０多名死刑犯一起关在了一间２０余平方米的房间里．他睡觉的地方只有一尺宽，并被睡在旁边的一名死刑犯打掉了一颗牙．由于患有严重的肠胃病和肝病，国安局担心如果在看守所出了事会造成国际影响，便释放了他．并恐吓：如果再不老实，有你的好看！
现在他回到了家中，接受监视去哪里都要向所在地的派出所和居委会报告，电话被监听．最基本的生活自由都受到了严格的限制．诚恳请求魏京生基金会的魏京生先生和黄慈萍女士，以您们在国际上声誉和地位呼吁，使韩华早日摆脱中共的恐吓与监视，重获自由．谢谢！

案例之四：重庆知名民运人士许万平先生面临起诉
一：李运生来信：
2005年5月12日下午接到重庆知名民运人士许万平先生的妻子陈贤英女士的电话说，一律师来找她，称：他们律师事务所得到"内部消息"，许万平已被"刑拘"，就要移交法院以"颠覆国家政权罪"起诉了，最好由陈贤英请律师，他们可接受这个辩护。
另据其他消息来源证实，此消息是可靠的。但陈贤英和她的不满7岁的孩子，现已无任何经济收入，生活陷入绝境，更无经济能力聘请律师了。
希望海内外关注中国大陆人权民主运动的人士和团体、媒体，能够密切关注、大力救援许万平先生及其家属，关注和救援正在受到新一轮打压迫害的中国国内民运人士与政治异议人士！

二：曾宁的文章
道德不合作运动--许万平创造的奇迹
坏人或好人，这是一个道德概念。
敌人或同志，这是一个政治概念。
罪犯或、、、找不到一个合适的对应辞汇，这是一个法律概念。
从道德的角度看，许万平是一个好人。坐在公交车上，遇到老、弱、病、残、孕，许一定会起身让坐。知道任何一个道义良知人士或他们的家人面临困境，许一定挺身而出，为他们呐喊、呼吁、争取人道帮助。可是今天，许万平却成了某些人眼中的坏人。
从政治的角度看，许万平是专制制度的敌人，许万平肯定不会成为专制制度的同志。这是不言自明的。因此今天，许万平的遭遇，完全就是百分之百的政治性行为。这一点，铁板盯钉、千真万确、不可抵赖。
从法律的角度看，噢，差一点忘了，没有做人的基本权利，哪有真正意义上的法律。而这正是许万平所信仰和追求的。民主是法律及其制度的条件和保障。没有民主就不会有真正意义上的法律及其制度。而人权正是法律和法制的真谛。可是今天，许万平自己却成了一个地道的、不折不扣的"罪犯"。
坏人或好人、敌人或同志、罪犯或其他，许万平创造了奇迹。许万平创造了一个以自己13亿分之一的斤两担当起了一个大国的道义责任、以自己1米60的身高撑掌起大众的良知理想、以自己活生生的遭遇反衬出经济上崛起政治上落后、愚昧国度的真实存在。
许万平创造了一个道德不合作运动的奇迹，而道德正是中国民主运动力量的源泉。
"我很平凡、平常、甚至平庸，我的所有仅仅是道德上严格要求自己，不能有道德上的暇疵。"许万平常这样说。
许不是文人，但有一颗文人的心。写作不是他的长项，因此许万平格外地要求自己，只有加倍地为那些道义良知人士及他们面临困苦绝境的家人争取一份人道上的关心与帮助，才能对得起自己的良心。
身上只有买一张火车票的钱，许也要出门。"我不能不关心朋友"。哪里有人权问题，哪里就有许万平的身影。不论在哪里，许的身后总是跟着长长的"尾巴"，当许和敏感人士接触，"尾巴"总是使用数码摄像机面对面把过程拍录下来。这个时候，许万平总是无愧于天地的打出一个"V"型手势。
"民主运动就是要运要动。"许憨厚地咯咯笑着说。许是想表达，一百个思想者比不上一个行动者。许的思想既单纯又可爱。"如果人人都很自私，中国就没有希望了"。
"六、四"十五周年，许坚持要在家中邀约重庆地区的道友悼念死难英灵。"对的就是对的、错的就是错的。"许坚决地说。这一天，许感冒，在家门口买感冒药的途中，几个不明身份者迅速地将几包毒品塞进许的包中，戏剧性情景被全程拍摄取证。在公安局，许对身边每一个警察不厌其烦地说："你们这样做不对喔"。直到警察们躲避耀眼灼人的阳光一样，慌忙用绳子将许和一张大铁椅像包棕子一样捆得严严实实、逃之夭夭为止。
许万平在生活上极其简单朴素，长年的贫困交加不能压垮他的意志。
许总是脸上洋溢着坚毅的自信，浑身充满了青春的活力，看上去不像40出头的人。这是一个有着坚定信念、顽强意志、精神世界十分充足富裕的小个子。
不尚空谈，许万平以自己的行为实践了中国民运"道德不合作运动"的崇高理念。
