Wei Jingsheng speaks at Celebration of Dalai Lama's 70th Birthday
On July 10, at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in McLean, Virginia, over 100 Tibetans and supporters of the Dalai Lama gathered to celebrate his 70th birthday. Wei Jingsheng was invited to speak about the Dalai Lama and the current state of Tibet.
Wei, in wishing the Dalai Lama further longevity, praised him for his selfless contributions for world peace and happiness. Wei noted the immense contributions the Dalai Lama has made to the well being of both Tibetans and people all over the world. Wei represented all kind-hearted Chinese people in wishing the Dalai Lama a happy birthday.
He pointed out that before, due to Chinese Communist propaganda, most of the Chinese people looked on Tibet and the Dalai Lama with disrespect. Now, however, more and more Chinese are coming to understand and gain respect for the two.
Wei also noted that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has been cheating the Dalai Lama for the last 50 years, and that two years ago it started a new round of tricks, when it agreed to hold negotiations with representatives of the Dalai Lama. The CCP has no intention of really negotiating with the Dalai Lama. But by claiming to enter into negotiations the CCP has been able to prevent the Dalai Lama and his people and supporters from continuing to protest, for they fear the failure of the negotiations. Thus, said Wei, the CCP has been able to slow the momentum of the Tibetan rights movement and to take advantage of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people.
As supporters and friends of the Dalai Lama, he said, we should stand up and do what the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan government in exile is unable to do: work to put massive pressure on the CCP. Only when faced with such pressure will the CCP give into the Dalai Lama's demands.

魏京生在紀念达赖喇嘛七十岁生日儀式發言
七月十號一百多個西藏人與支持達賴喇嘛的人集合在弗吉尼亞的一個路德教堂，共同紀念达赖喇嘛的七十大寿。魏京生先生受邀就賴喇嘛和西藏目前的政治情況讲话。
魏京生祝達賴喇嘛長壽﹐并稱讚他無私的對世界和平以及對西藏人和世界上的人的幸福所作的巨大貢獻。魏京生代表所有善良的漢族人祝达赖喇嘛生日快樂。
他指出過去因為受到中共的政治宣傳的影響﹐很多中國人不太尊重達賴喇嘛和西藏。可是目前中國人越來越了解并尊敬西藏與達賴喇嘛。
魏京生也指出中共在這五十年以來一直在欺騙達賴喇嘛﹐兩年来又開始使用新的欺騙手段﹕跟達賴喇嘛的代表開始談判。其实，中共不會真的跟達賴喇嘛进行公平与诚意的谈判。但中共知道达赖喇嘛与流亡政府希望谈判而进行表面上的談判可以避免達賴喇嘛與流亡政府公開抗議中共的行為。這樣中共可以減少西藏運動的聲勢﹐佔很大的便宜。
他說作为達賴喇嘛的朋友與支持者﹐我們應該做達賴喇嘛與流亡政府目前不能做的﹕給中共巨大的壓力。只有這樣的壓力中共才會接受達賴喇嘛的條件。
