The person in the article, Mr. HU ShiGen, is one of the two winners for the first annual Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" who is still serving the 20 years sentence the Chinese Communist government imposed on him. The writer, Mr. LIU Jingsheng, is a well-recognized democracy advocator himself, a 1998 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award recipient as well as an honorary member of PEN American Center and other organizations, was just released several months ago after a 15 years sentence. Hu Shigen, Can You Live Through This?

I got acquainted with Hu Shigen in 1989, the year that history will never forget. In a blink ten-plus years have passed since then. Hu's facial features, figure, speech and spirit remain firmly in my mind, images indelible despite the passage of time.
The first time I met him was on May 1, 1989. He was on a small piece of open ground in front of Dormitory #28 of Peking University talking on and on about his points of view. Around him were many ardent young folks, listening earnestly and attentively to him. I was one of the audiences. The first impression Hu gave people was of a middle-aged man who was short, skinny, carelessly dressed and homely. If we were to see each other briefly amongst the vast masses of sentient beings, I definitely wouldn't have given him a second look. But upon hearing that speech, full of fervor, sincerity, but also profound and incisive, as if it had insight into all aspects of life, you would definitely be fascinated and moved by him, and you wouldn't be able to keep yourself from feeling the fire of righteous indignation inside you. He is the organic unity of a commonplace appearance and a magnificent interior.
After the raw, violent hurricane of June 4 passed, many people felt like they were unable to help others or themselves. Quite a few people began to indulge themselves, to lead a life of pleasure, to sink into degradation, or to seek a new place to put their spiritual hopes in. People seemed to forget very quickly June 4 and those who died. At this time, Hu Shigen found me and directly and clearly asked me: "Do you wish to do a little something for those who died?" I was so moved by his enthusiasm, candor, trust and sincerity that I agreed without thinking much about it, saying, "I am willing to do a few meaningful things and will not be resigned to sinking into vice." On this day, we clasped our hands closely together.
After this, he introduced me to people and had me joint Chinese Freedom and Democracy Party" I felt very proud to be able to enter into this organization and will forever remember the day that I did, January 7, 1991, the day after my 37th birthday. Together we also established "the Preparation Committee of Free Workers' Union of China", and became determined to do solid work for the people at the lowest level of society. At that time we had many different ideas and choices. The safest plan was to make extensive connections, and to reserve our strength and be ready for action. But in the end we abandoned this most reliable choice and instead chose a direct but extremely dangerous path: secretly forming a political party and disseminating democracy. In Hu Shigen's view, under the backdrop of 1989, at a time when no one dared to speak out and when almost no one would take on the cause of morality and justice for the Chinese people, we had to stand up.
In an extremely difficult environment we formed our political party step by step and completed a series of early-stage tasks, and with the joint efforts of WANG GuoQi, WANG TianCheng, KANG YuChun, ZHAO Xin, AN Ning, CHEN Wei, CHEN QingLin, LIU Jingsheng and others we grew stronger every day. We focused on three periods of time in 1991 when spreading democratic ideas: October 1, New Year's Day, and the Spring Festival. We printed out materials and posted them up, mailed them to people and handed them out in order to expose the brutality of those in power and to disseminate the ideas of human rights and democracy. Most of the articles were drafted by HU Shigen. In my view what we did was not a lot, not enough, and not done well; I still hoped that we could make a great show of our efforts and to rush forward with the strength of a hurricane.
At this time Hu Shigen reminded me timely, "Even though we haven't done that much, we have still done something. All of us are cobblestones on the path we are blazing. Perhaps we will not see that day of victory, but we will have a clear conscience: we'll have lived up to this era, lived up to our conscience, lived up to those who died, and lived up to ourselves. That is enough!" His clear conscience made me feel ashamed. Compared with his magnanimity and breadth of mind, I was too practical and concerned about self-interests. I couldn't help but ask myself: "Are we for freedom or for ourselves?"
Hu Shigen had the kind of profound and fresh ideas that couldn't be kept covered up. Those he could convince he convinced, and those that he couldn't convince he found common ground with; he never forced people to have the same ideas as him. When we had unavoidable disputes, he never distanced himself from those with different ideas than him. He treated everyone with sincerity and gained everyone's trust and respect. Hu Shigen was enthusiastic and took initiative when doing things, always accompanied by an women's bicycle which was overused but carried him all over Beijing. Day after day, year after year, he worked hard for his beliefs, for justice, and for the "Chinese Freedom and Democracy Party". He grew more and more emaciated every day, and grew more and more gray hairs, yet at that time he wasn't even 37 years old yet. I would often sigh with emotion when thinking about this. I sighed because he was born in the wrong period of time and sighed because he had to use the most primitive and backward work methods to contend with the armed-to-the-teeth vested interests. What a difference in power...
Time has flown by and 16 years have passed. Mr. Hu is still in jail, enduring the kind of torture that average people have a hard time imagining, and the kind of suffering that's hard to endure. His so-called "criminal acts" are nothing more than putting his conviction in democracy into practice! For the sake of making his beliefs and actions as one, he gave up twenty years of youth to "enjoy" twenty years of suffering in prison ... alas! Where is justice? Where can fairness be found?
Hu Shigen, my truthful friend, can you live through all this? When can we see each other again?

胡石根，你还能活着出来吗？

我与胡石根的相识是在16年前──那个历史不会忘记的1989年。一恍10几年过去。他的面目、他的身影、他的话语、他的精神，却牢牢刻在我们的脑海中，久久挥不去。
我与他的第1次见面是89年5月的1天，他正在北京大学里学生宿舍28楼前的一小块空地上滔滔不绝的发表着自己的观点。周围有不少热血青年，在认真的倾听，我也是其中一员。胡给人的第1个印象是：1个身材瘦小的中年人，个子不高，衣着随便，其貌不扬。如果在芸芸众生中偶然相显，绝不肯多看上一眼。然而，一旦听到他那充满激情、诚恳，却又是那么深刻尖锐、似乎洞察一切的演讲时，你一定会被他所吸引，会被他所感动，会情不自禁的热血沸腾起来。他就是这样的1个人，外表的平庸与内在的伟大有机的结合起来。
一场杀气腾腾的暴风骤雨过后，很多人都感到无助与无奈。许多人开始放纵，开始享乐，开始沉沦，开始寻找新的精神寄托。人们似乎很快就忘记了“6．4”，忘记了那些死去的人。就在这时，胡石根找到了我，直接明确地问到：“是否希望做点什么──为那些死去的人？”我被他的热情、直率、信任、真诚所打动，不假思索的答应道：“我愿意做些有意义的事，不甘沉沦。”这一天。我们的手紧紧握在了一起。
这之后，他介绍我加入了“中国自由民主党”。我为自己能加入这个组织而感到自豪，并永远的记住了这一天──1991年1月7日，正是我37岁生日的第2天。我们还共同创建了“中国自由工会”筹备委员会，决心为生活在社会底层的民众做些实实在在的事。我们当时也有多个意见，多种选择。最安全的方案是：“广交朋友，储势待发”。可我们最终还是放弃了这一最稳妥的选择，而选择了一条虽然直接，却极具危险的“秘密组党”与“传播民主观念”的独木桥。在胡石根看来，在当时的背景下，在这万马齐暗的时刻，在几乎没有人肯为中华民族的道义担当的时候，我们必须站出来。
“组党”在极为艰险的环境中一步步走了下来，完成了一系列前期工作，并在王国齐、王天成、康玉春、赵昕、安宁、陈卫、陈青林、刘京生等等同仁的努力下一天天壮大起来。在传播民主理念方面，我们分别于91年的“10．1”、“元旦”、“春节”期间，通过印刷、张贴、邮寄、散发等多种多样方式，揭露权力者的残暴，传播人权、民主观念，大部分文章都是胡石根起草的。在我看来，我们做得还不多、不够、不好，还想大张旗鼓、狂飚突进地干一番。这时胡石根及时的提醒我：“我们也许做得不多，但我们做了。我们都是铺路石子，有可能看不到胜利的那一天，但我们无愧──无愧于这个时代，无愧于我们的良心，无愧于死去的人，也无愧于自己，这已足矣！”好一个无愧，无愧得令我汗颜。与胡石根的坦荡胸襟相比，我则太过现实，太过功利。我不禁反思：我们是为了自由，还是为了自己？？
胡石根有深刻而鲜明的观点，毫不掩饰，能说服的说服，不能说服的求大同存小异，从不强求统一。在我们之间争议不可避免，可他从不因观点的不同而疏远谁。他真诚地对待所有的人，赢得了大家对他的信任与爱戴。胡石根做起事来热情而主动，一辆一直伴随他左右的破旧女车，载着他长年累月的往返于京城的各个角落，年复一年日复一日地，为了信仰，为了正义，为了“中国自民党”而操劳。眼见着他一天天消瘦下去，白发也一天天多了起来，而此时他还不到37岁。我对此常常感慨，感慨他生不逢时，感慨他不得不用最原始最落后的工作方式来抗衡武装到牙齿的既得利益集团，如此力量悬殊……。
时光飞逝，16年过去，胡石根先生依旧在牢中，饱受着常人难以想象的煎熬，饱受着常人难以承受的苦难。而他所谓的罪行，就是他实实在在地用自己的行动践行了自己的民主信念！为了这一知行合一的选择，他付出了20年的青春，“享受”着20年的牢狱之苦……呜呼！正义何在？公道何存？
胡石根，我的挚友呵，你还能活着出来吗？我们何时才能再相见？
