Finishing His Sentence on His 60th Birthday

Mr. Liao Shihua just finished going through six years of prison term imposed upon him by despotism, as he fulfilled his sentence three months ago. On October 4, he turned 60. Friends of his gathered in the city of Changsha to celebrate the occasion.
Before being sent to jail, Mr. Liao was an auto mechanic at the Changsha Automobile Electronic Apparatus Factory in Changsha city, Hunan Province. Yet he was a sober-minded and courageous worker. On many occasions he led workers to protest against the government and to firmly oppose corruption. Later on, he took part in organizing activities for the Chinese Democracy Party, yet he fell victim to cruel political persecution, as the autocracy government sentenced him to six years in jail. At the time, the authorities used a dual felony to persecute him, one being "Suberverting State Power," and the other being "Gathering a Mob to Assault State Offices". He exercised his right of association, and demanded the implementation of a democratic and constitutional government, but the autocratic judicature distorted into "Subverting State Power." And his going to government offices to reason things out, to appeal and demonstrate, was distorted into "Gathering a Mob to Assault State Offices." It seems as if modern Mainland China's despotism is thorough and comprensive. Even in the ancient era of dynasties, citizens could beat the yamen drum and appeal for justice. But even that bit of tradition has been exterminated.
In sharing with friends from Hunan, I can sense their chivalry. They do not fear the high pressure of autocracy, and continue to build up their strength, and through a multi-faceted civil rights plan, they hope to gradually push forward reforms of Chinese society. It is said that at Mr. Liao's birthday party, what people earnestly inquired about was conflicts in and the current state of Chinese society, and the path to and plan for Chinese human rights and civil rights movements. From their phone calls and photographs, I have come to understand their character: they are not worried or grieved about hardships, they do not submit to violence and force, their convictions are firm, and they continue to sacrifice self-interest to pay a price for others.
Our friends from Hunan who remain steadfast to the civil rights movement in the face of hardships are hurrying to remind everyone to continue to pay attention to dissidents still in Hunan prisons, including Professor Tong Shidong.
Before being arrested, Mr. Tong Shidong was an Associate Professor at the Physics Department of Hunan University, and was one of the members of the intellectual class with vested interests. But his conscience and courage drove him to put himself into danger, and he actively took part in organizing and establishing the Chinese Democracy Party. On June 8, 1999, he was detained, then was sentenced to ten years. At the time, he was 65 years old. By today he has already spent six and a half years in a jail; he even spent his seventieth birthday under political persecution from despotism. It can be seen from this the kind of cruelty China's heroes are subjected to. He had his sentence reduced twice, and is estimated to leave jail in March of 2006.
Mr. Liao and friends from Hunan strongly demand that the Hunan authorities release the old civil rights elite Professor Tong Shidong, along with all other detained dissidents.

──小记湖南工运前锋廖石华先生

廖石华先生刚刚经历了6年专制主义强加给他的牢狱，于3个月前刑满了。10月4日，是他60寿辰。朋友们聚会长沙，为之庆贺。
廖石华先生，入狱前是湖南长沙汽车电子仪器厂汽车维修工人，但是他是个觉醒的勇敢的工人，曾经多次带领工人向政府提出抗议，坚决反对腐败，后来参与中国民主党的组建活动，而遭到严酷的政治迫害，专制官府判决他6年有期徒刑。当时官方以双重罪名迫害他，1个是“颠覆国家政权”，另外1个是“聚众冲击国家机关”。行使结社权，要求实现民主宪政，则专制司法扭曲为“颠覆国家政权”；而到政府机关寻找说理、请愿示威，则被扭曲为“聚众冲击国家机关”，看来现代中国大陆专制主义，全面而彻底，连古代王朝时代的国民可以击鼓鸣冤的一点好传统，也灭杀了。
在和湖南朋友们的交流中，能够感受到他们的侠义之气，他们不畏惧专制高压，仍然在继续积蓄力量，试图通过多元化的民权方略，逐步推进中国社会的改革。据说，他们在廖石华先生的生日聚会中，就中国社会的矛盾与现状，中国人权与民权运动的道路与方略，作了认真的探讨。从他们电话里与照片上，我等了解到他们不为苦难所忧伤，不为强暴所折服，信念坚强，继续以牺牲自我利益为代价的品格等等。
于苦难中坚持民权运动的湖南朋友们，还急切提醒大家继续关注湖南狱中的其他异议人士，其中包括佟适冬教授。
佟适冬先生被逮前系湖南大学物理系副教授，也是知识阶层中既得利益者之一。但是良知与勇气驱动他置个人安危于不顾，积极参与组建中国民主党。于1999年6月8日被拘禁，后来遭到10年有期徒刑的判决，当年65岁高龄，到今年在监狱里已经度过6年半了，古稀之年还继续受到专制主义的政治迫害，可见中华英杰的遭遇何等的惨烈。他获得过两次减刑，估计明年3月能够出狱。
廖石华先生和湖南的朋友们强烈要求湖南当局释放老年民权精英佟适冬教授以及其他所有被监禁的异议人士。
