Statement from IFCSS Supporting Lawyer Gao Zhisheng and Human Rights Defending Movement in China and Establishing "IFCSS Rights Defending Foundation"

The Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars (IFCSS) has been closely following the situation in which the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) police has, since beginning of last year's winter, stepped up its efforts to persecute lawyer Gao Zhisheng and his colleagues. We hereby state our support for lawyer Gao Zhisheng, protest the CCP police's harassment and persecution of him, and call for an immediate release of all those who have been detained for supporting the human rights movements.
As a defense lawyer for Falun Gong practitioners, Gao Zhisheng has, since October of 2004, spoke in defense of victims both inside and outside the courts and wrote a letter to the CCP's upper levels exposing the judicature's brutal persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. Because of this, Gao has become a target of continued pressure and persecution for the CCP police. After illegally shutting down his law practice, the police has, for the last more than one hundred days, continued to secretly monitor, encircle, and harass Gao, and many civil rights advocates who have expressed support to Gao have been secretly arrested or simply disappeared. IFCSS has paid attention to Gao's relay hunger strike used to protest persecution from the police and the government. The momentum brought about by those who have expressed in support of Gao's hunger strike or have joined its ranks is rolling on with full force and made great waves both inside and outside of China.
It's a well-known fact that the Chinese Communist regime pays no respect to the universal human rights . In most parts of the world, it has been treated as the symbol of human civilization for a society to have the freedom of rally, freedom of association and freedom of expression. However, in the eyes of CCP, those rights are as dangerous as floodwater or furious animals. In the past 16 years since the June 4 massacre in 1989, through the globalization of a capitalist economy, China has had surprising economic growth. Yet under a one-party dictatorship, Chinese society's morals have been corrupted, justice is nonexistent, corruption is pervasive, and the gap between rich and poor is redoubling. None of the widespread masses - especially powerless groups of people - can have their basic rights and interests insured, in instances such as people having their houses forcibly demolished, state-run enterprises being sold for low prices, people losing their jobs and falling into poverty, and religious groups or Falun Gong practitioners having their religious freedom deprived from them. This has created wave after wave of protest movements by the Chinese people. Amidst this, many lawyers and legal workers willing to support these people, such as Huang Qi, Xu Wanping, and Gao Zhisheng, have appeared. They risk themselves, by the legal means, to defend rights for the victims and less privileged, to fight for basic human rights and freedom that is guaranteed by the constitution. In an era where society's morals are rapidly declining, Gao Zhisheng, his colleagues, and all of the people of good will who have strived for their basic interests and human rights are the backbone of our nation!
IFCSS strongly demands that the CCP police immediately cease its persecution of lawyer Gao Zhisheng and all other human rights advocates. Any attempts to further punish lawyer Gao and his colleagues will only create even stronger criticism and resistance both inside and outside of China.
The IFCSS council passed a resolution to establish a "Rights Defending Foundation" and to call on people from all walks of life to eagerly contribute and to work together to support the Chinese rights defending movement and its advocates. (www.ifcss.org)
IFCSS restates that no matter how the Chinese communist regime resists or suppresses dissent or how wicked its methods of persecuting rights advocates are, the people continue to awaken, and the rise of the civil rights movement and the entire human rights movement as well as the spread of a free civilization will lead to the destruction of this autocratic regime. IFCSS will act as always, joining forces and working together with progressive forces both inside and outside China and to push forward the process of China joining the mainstream of civilized societies that respect personal freedoms and people's rights and interests.

全美学自联就声援高智晟律师及维权运动及成立“全美学自联公民维权基金”的声明

全美中国学生学者自治联合会密切关注自去年入冬以来中共警方升级迫害律师高智晟及同仁，特此声明声援高智晟律师，抗议中共警方对高律师及同仁的骚扰和迫害，呼吁立即释放因公民维权运动而被关押的所有人士。
高智晟先生自2004年10月起，作为法轮功修练者的辩护律师，在法庭内外为受害者辩护，并上书中共高层揭露司法机构残酷迫害法轮功修练者的真相。高智晟律师因此成为中共警方持续打压、迫害的对象。继非法关闭高智晟律师事务所之后，过去一百多天里，数十名警察天天对高律师实行跟踪监视、围堵骚扰；多名声援高律师的维权人士被秘密抓捕而失踪。全美学自联注意到高律师已开始每周定期绝食，以抗议警方和政府的迫害。而声援高律师绝食并加入其行列的声浪，已风起云涌，在海内外掀起狂澜。
众所周知，中共政权一向蔑视普世的人权价值。作为人类社会文明标志的人民集会、结社和言论自由，一直被中共视为洪水猛兽。“六四”镇压十六年来，凭籍着资本主义经济全球化的机遇，中国经历着傲人的经济成长。然而，在一党专制的独裁体制之下，社会道德败坏、正义无存、腐败丛生，贫富差距倍增。广大民众，尤其是弱势群体的基本权益不能得到保障。诸如强制拆迁、国企贱卖、失业贫困、以及宗教活动和法轮功修练自由被剥夺等，已激起民众一波接一波的反抗浪潮。这其中也涌现出象黄琦、许万平以及高智晟等一大批法律工作者。他们挺身而出，以法律为手段，为受害者和弱势群体争取权益、争取宪法保障的基本人权和自由。在这个世风日下的年代，高律师和他的同道以及所有为争取民众基本权益和人权的仁人志士，是我们民族的脊樑！
全美学自联强烈要求中共警方立即停止对高律师和所有维权人士的迫害。以任何形式企图加罪于高律师及其同仁，只会激起海内外更强烈的谴责和反抗。
全美学自联理事会决议成立“公民维权基金”，并呼吁各界踊跃捐献、共襄盛举，以支持国内的公民维权运动和维权人士（www.ifcss.org）。
全美学自联重申，不管中共政权如何抗拒、如何镇压异议，亦或当前迫害维权及相关人士的手段如何恶劣，民众不断地觉醒、维权运动和整个人权运动的崛起以及人类自由文明的浪潮，终会将这个“硕果残存”的专制政权摧毁。全美学自联将一如既往，与海内外进步力量和人士并肩努力，促使中国早日融入尊重个人自由和权利的文明人类社会的主流。
