WEI Jingsheng Meets with Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor, Barry Lowenkron

On Wednesday, April 26, 2006, WEI Jingsheng, the Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, met with Barry Lowenkron, the Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor in the US State Department.  The meeting lasted for one hour.  HUANG Ciping, the Secretary-General of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and the Executive Director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, Susan O'Sullivan, Senior Advisor for Asia of the Bureau, and Dr. Michael Orona, Foreign Policy Advisor, were also present.  The meeting progressed with an enthusiastic and practical atmosphere.

Mr. Lowenkron said that he knows a lot about Mr. Wei and expressed his respect and willingness for Wei's opinions and help, especially for discussions regarding detailed issues and developments in China, and his interest in improving the American human rights policy towards China.  While Ms. O'Sullivan and Dr. Orona made inquiries on many detailed matters, Mr. Lowenkron expressed his concern for the general trends in China, as well as the rights defense movement, the fate of the immigrant workers, and the future association with a democratic China.

Mr. Wei answered their questions, and analyzed the political status inside China and the reality of the deterioration of Chinese human rights condition.  Ms. Huang gave supplemental information towards Mr. Wei's answers.  Both sides discussed some detailed plans.  Both sides agreed it was not enough time to cover all the related affairs and that they shall make periodical meetings in the future for further discussion.
