WEI Jingsheng and Joseph ZEN Ze-kiun Received Liberty Award from Italy
(By Epoch Times reporter Lan Ning from Italy) At a symposium organized by Italy's Siena University on September 22, and 23, Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition Chairman Wei Jingsheng was awarded the "Stefano Bellaveglia Award", to honor his decades of opposing the Chinese Communist Party's tyranny and for his perseverance and unyielding effort in striving for Chinese democracy. At the same time, Hong Kong Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, well known for defending human rights and freedom of belief and for pushing for Chinese democracy -- was awarded the annual Sienna Liberty Award.
Fondazione Liberal organized the symposium. The topic for the symposium was " World Powers and Human Rights: What the Western World Could Do?" Siena mayor Maurizio Cenni and archbishop of Siena, Antonio Buoncristiani attended the symposium to make opening remarks. Fondazione Liberal chairman and Italian Parliament member Ferdinando Adornato, Bishop Rino Fisichella, Vatican Asia News Father Bernardo Cervellera, Fondazione Liberal's co-chair Renzo Foa, French philosopher Andre Glucksmann, etc, gave lectures and speeches from different angles condemning the Chinese Communist Party's violation of the Chinese human rights.
Foundation chairman and Member of Italian Parliament Ferdinando Adornato of Forza Italia gave the reasons why the awards were given to Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun and Mr. Wei Jingsheng. He said: "Here we would like to make a small dedication. We are very honored to have Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun as our guest. He has never stopped calling out for freedom of belief; not only in defense of Christian beliefs, but also in defense of the Falun Gong spiritual movement. Because of his effort to defend democracy in China, back in 2003 Cardinal Zen was awarded the "Hong Kong Man of the Year'. We are also extremely honored to award Mr. Wei Jingsheng. We are in admiration of what he has been through personally and politically, as well as all that he has done and has sacrificed for the cause of Chinese democracy and freedom.
As the Chinese economy has developed, the Chinese Communist Party has only further encroached on human rights. Adornato said, "The key change is not economic, but political. When humans are not considered of greatest value, the nation is completely in the service of capital, regardless of size, regardless of public or private, regardless of domestic or foreign, it is just communism and capitalism's worst parts put together to produce a most strange government, practicing 'man to man exploitation'. This is unseen in history."
Adornato said at the end of his speech: "In the world there is only one truth: like every true economical interest, every national interest can not last long without the forever and undestroyable engine of the respect for the human. Humanity's most basic interest, that political and economic interest, is freedom. Nothing else exists, or like phantoms of power not worth of mentioning -- they are destined to be eliminated. Let us all remember that the freedom of the Chinese people is also our freedom."
Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun addressed the audience after receiving his award. He explained that after July 1st 1997 when Hong Kong was returned to the Communist regime, the church had no choice but to step forward to protect the interests of the disadvantaged and of those who cannot speak up for themselves. He mentioned defending the freedom of belief of Falun Gong practitioners, defending children of Hong Kong residents born outside of Hong Kong in their effort to reunite with their families, opposing Article 23, and issues concerning administration of parish schools.
It is said that Cardinal Zen Ze-kiun hopes to use this trip to Rome to request that the Pope lessen his day-to-day responsibilities in the diocese of Hong Kong in order to participate more in the capacity of the Vatican's Holy See to China affair.
The "Stefano Bellaveglia" award was established this year. It is to commemorate Siena Commercial Bank vice president Stefano Bellaveglia, who died March of this year after contracting malaria while in the Congo to help children. He has been recognized as a symbol of generosity and self-sacrifice for others. This is the third time the Siena liberty Award has been awarded.
Fondazione Liberal of Italy was initiated by Ferdinando Adornato in 1995 in Rome. The aim is that through holding cultural, economic, and political forums to promote moral principles and exchange free political ideas and thoughts between secular society and the Catholic Church, thus enabling these principles to move from individuals to society, from households to communities, be passed on to production systems, and on to public organizations and international organizations.

魏京生和陈日君主教意大利获颁自由奖
（大纪元记者兰宁意大利报导）在9月22日至23日于意大利中部锡耶那大学举办的研讨会上，中国民主运动海外联席会议主席魏京生先生被授予“贝雷瓦雷”奖，以褒奖他在多年来反抗中共暴政，争取中国的民主所做出的不懈和不屈的努力。同时，以在香港维护人权和信仰自由，推动中国民主而著称的香港主教陈日君，获颁2006年度锡耶那自由奖。
该研讨会是由意大利自由基金会主办，本次研讨会的主题为“中国和自由—世界强国对人权的侵犯：西方应如何行动？”锡耶那市市长和教会主教到场致开幕词。自由基金会主席意大利力量党国会议员阿多尔纳多、菲兹凯乐主教、梵蒂冈亚洲新闻社切尔韦拉神父、基金会主任弗阿及法国哲学家格鲁克斯曼等，分别就中共对中国民众人权的侵害状况从各个角度进行了发言。
基金会主席兼议员的阿多尔纳多在发言中明确解释了为何将两个奖项分别授予陈日君主教和魏京生。他称，“我们在这里想做出一个小小的贡献。我们非常荣幸的邀请到了陈主教作为我们的客人。他从未停止他维护信仰自由的呐喊，除了维护基督教信仰之外，他还维护了法轮功精神运动。因为他维护中国民主事业的努力，早在二零零三年陈主教就被授予香港年度风云人物的称号。我们也非常荣幸将奖项颁给魏京生先生，他的个人和政治经历，以及他对中国民主和自由事业所作出的牺牲和努力令人敬佩。”
就中国经济发展的同时，中共却加大对人权侵害的这一现象时，阿多尔纳多表示，“改变的关键不在于经济，而在于政治。因为在一个没有以人为中心的价值参考，国家是完全为资本服务的，无论大小，无论公私，无论本土还是国外，也就是共产主义和资本主义最坏部份的结合产生的一个最奇怪的政府，进行 “人对人的剥削”，这是在历史上前所未有的。”
阿多尔纳多在演讲的最后表示：“在世界上只有一个真理：每一个真正的国家利益如同每一个真正的经济利益，如果没有对人的根本尊重这一永恒和不可摧毁的发动机来推动，是不会长久的。人的最根本的利益，那个政治和经济的利益，就是自由。其他的都不存在，都是微不足道的权力的幻象，是注定要被淘汰的。请我们共同记住，中国人民的自由也是我们自己的自由。 "
获奖的陈日君主教在领奖后也发表了演讲。他讲述了在1997年七月一日香港过渡到中共政权统治下后，教会不得不站出来维护弱者和那些没有发言权的人的利益。他提到了维护法轮功信仰自由，维护非香港出生的香港居民孩子的团聚问题和反对基本法二十三条及教会学校的管理问题等。据说陈日君主教想利用他此次在罗马的机会，要求教皇减轻他在香港教区的日常事务的工作，以便更好的做好梵蒂冈教廷的中国事务参议。
“贝雷瓦雷奖”是今年第一次设立，是为纪念锡耶那商业银行副总裁贝雷瓦雷而设立的奖项。贝雷瓦雷因为到刚果帮助儿童而感染疟疾，在今年三月去世。他被认为是慷慨和为他人牺牲的象征。“锡耶那自由奖”则是第三次颁奖。
意大利自由基金会是由意大利力量党国会议员安多尔多发起，于1995年在罗马。其宗旨是通过举办文化、经济和政府问题的论坛，以促进世俗和天主教教会之间的道德伦理价值和自由政治思想方面的交流，从而使这些价值得以从人传达到社会，从家庭传达到社区，传达到生产体系、公共机构和国际机构。
