Jingsheng, Huang Ciping Attend the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony in Honor
of the 14th Dalai Lama and Met with Both the Dalai Lama and Speaker Pelosi
On
the invitation of Mrs. Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the US House of
Representatives, Mr. WEI Jingsheng and Ms. HUANG Ciping attended the
Congressional Gold Medal ceremony honoring his holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of
Tibet, Tenzin Gyatso, in the US Capitol's Rotunda on Wednesday afternoon the
17th of October, 2007. Also
attended was Wei Jingsheng Foundation’s Nick Zifcak.
Congressional
members and activists, many significant Tibetan religious and political
figures, Lamas and monks from all over the world were present, as well as 4
rows of journalists. Other invited
Chinese guests include Mr. Harry WU and Dr. YANG Jianli.
Speaker
Pelosi gave the welcome address and US President Bush presented the Dalai Lama
with the Congressional Gold Medal.
The Medal is the highest civilian honor of the US Congress. All the party leaders of both the House
and Senate, as well as the congress members who initiated the related
resolution, delivered their speeches, praising the Dalai Lama's effort for
peace. The Dalai Lama gave his
acceptance and words of thanks in English at the end.
Later,
both Wei Jingsheng and Huang Ciping went to the reception hosted by Speaker
Nancy Pelosi in her office, where she especially recognized Mr. WEI Jingsheng
and Mr. Harry WU for their contributions to Chinese democracy and freedom to
the 20 or so VIPs at the reception.
The
VIPs included well-known Tibetan supporter actor Richard Gere, well-known film
director Martin Scorsese, Under Secretary Paula Dobriansky, former Chinese
Ambassador Winston Lord, dean of the UC Berkeley School of Journalism Orville
Schell, author James Mann, Representative David Wu, etc. And of course, his holiness, the Dalai
Lama.
After
the reception, all of them were invited to the VIP seating on the west lawn of
the US Capitol where thousands of people had gathered to observe the broadcast
of the Gold Medal ceremony from the Rotunda earlier. The event concluded with a public address by the Dalai Lama
in Tibetan language, and a Tibetan Cultural presentation performed by hundreds
of Tibetans.

魏京生、黄慈萍应邀出席达赖喇嘛的美国国会金质奖章的颁奖仪式;参加佩洛西议长为贵宾另行举行的招待会并与达赖喇嘛会面
受美国国会议长南茜.佩洛西的邀请,魏京生先生和黄慈萍女士于2007年10月17日星期三出席了在美国国会山主楼圆形大厅举行的达赖喇嘛接受美国国会金质奖章的仪式。魏京生基金会的倪克也参加了仪式。
美国各界人士及国会议员、来自世界各地的许多著名藏人和喇嘛及众多的记者参加了这个仪式。其他应邀参加仪式的中国客人还有吴弘达先生与杨建利博士。
佩洛西议长邀请布什总统代表美国人民,将象征国会最高荣誉的金质奖章颁赠给西藏精神领袖达赖喇嘛。国会参众两院领袖及推出有关提案的国会议员也致词,表彰达赖喇嘛为和平所作的努力。达赖喇嘛以英文致词表示感谢。
之后,魏京生和黄慈萍受邀参加由佩洛西议长主持的约有二十来人参加的贵宾招待酒会。佩洛西议长还特别向其他贵宾们介绍了魏京生先生与吴弘达先生为中国民主自由而作的努力。
参加佩洛西酒会的其他贵宾包括有:达赖喇嘛,电影明星理查德.基尔(Richard Gere),电影名导演马丁.斯考赛斯(Martin Scorsese), 副国务卿杜布然斯基(Paula
Dobriansky)前美国驻中国大使洛德(Winston Lord), 加州伯克利大学新闻学院院长夏伟(Orville Schell),作家詹姆斯.曼(James
Mann),美国众议院议员吴振伟(David Wu)等。
酒会后,贵宾们应邀在已有数千人聚集的国会山主楼的西草坪的前排就座,并聆听了达赖喇嘛的一个藏文演讲及有数百藏人参加的文化传统表演。
