Wei Jingsheng Foundation Holds "Human Rights and Olympics in China" Press Conference and Forum in the US Capitol

On the afternoon of April 9, 2008, with the support of the US Speaker Nancy Pelosi's office, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation held a press conference and forum in room HC-5 of the US Capitol main building.  On the occasion of the 2008 Olympics torch arriving in USA, the title of the conference was "Human Rights and Olympics in China".  About 10 news media participated in the conference and gave reports.

The event was co-sponsored by the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, Beijing Spring, China Constitutionalist Association, Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars, Free China Movement Foundation, Tibetan Association of the Capitol Area, Chushi Gangdruk, Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong in China, and the Inner Mongolia People's Party.  Ms. HUANG Ciping, the executive director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, moderated the conference.

Senior Congressional representative Chris Smith delivered the first speech.  He listed Chinese government's human rights abuses in remarkable details and sternly criticized the Chinese government's control over people's speech, as well as trampling over religious freedom, as well as forced abortions.  He thinks a government with such a terrible human rights record is not qualified to host the Olympic Games, and called for a full-scale boycott of the Beijing Olympics by the international community including President Bush.  Congressman Smith urged the Chinese to dramatically improve its human rights immediately.  He also introduced House Resolution 275 "Global Online Freedom" bill in detail.

Mr. Wei Jingsheng criticized the Western countries lead by the USA for not timely and severely criticizing the Chinese Communist government's suppression in China.  This lack of criticism caused the Chinese Communists to misinterpret the signals from the international society, resulting in increased suppression of human rights defenders, religious believers and minorities.  He urged the US to lead the Western countries to correct this mistake as soon as possible.

Senior Congress member Frank Wolf concentrated his criticism of the Chinese Communists on religious suppression.  In particular, he severely criticized the government's recent crackdown on the Tibetans and Lamas in Tibet.  He thinks that neither the American people nor the American government should tolerate this kind of cruelty and both the US Congress and administration should react strongly.  He is working on a new resolution to prohibit U.S. federal employees from attending the 2008 Beijing Olympics at taxpayers' expense, except for security and law enforcement personnel, the US president, and staff directly supporting the president.

Senior Congress member Dana Rohrabacher also came to the conference to show his support, despite his busy schedule.

Tibetan representatives and representatives of religion including Falun Gong practitioners also criticized the Chinese Communist government's push of reactionary policy, especially with the upcoming Olympics in Beijing.  They all agreed that as the Chinese Communist government is sowing discord between different ethnic groups, it is extremely important for all the people to unite together to oppose the suppression.

Others coming to the conference and delivering speeches included: Advocacy Director of Amnesty International, T. Kumar; former prisoner of Conscience, LIU NianChun of New York; president of Chushi Gangdruk, Doma Norbu of New York; North American chair of "Coalition of Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong in China" and human rights lawyer, Dr. Clive Ansley of Canada; chief editor of "Big Reference", LI HongKuan; executive director of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs, Dr. CHEN Wen-yen of Taiwan and Dr. Wees of Netherlands; victimized Falun Gong practitioner, Dr. Charles LEE of New Jersey; chief executive officer of "Doctors against Forced Organ Harvesting", Dr. Torsten Trey of Germany; Free China Movement Foundation human rights lawyer, Mr. Ye Ning.  Member of the European Parliament and president of the Non Violent Radical Party, Mr. Marco Pannella; chief editor of Beijing Spring, Mr. HU Ping; council chair of China Constitutionalist Association, Dr. WANG JunTao also delivered their statements for the conference.

The two hours long conference had to be extended for half an hour.  After the end of the conference, various representatives and ethnic groups exchanged gifts and took photos with the Congress members, while continuing friendly conversations.
