Wei
Jingsheng Meets His Holiness the Dalai Lama in Madison, Wisconsin, USA
On
July 22, 2008, Wei Jingsheng, the Chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy
Coalition, and Huang Ciping, the Secretary-General of the OCDC, went to
Madison, Wisconsin, and met with the Dalai Lama, who was there teaching.
At
the beginning of the meeting, Mr. Wei pointed out that the recent Beijing trip
of the Tibetan representatives has been a failure without any result of substance
-- to go to Beijing without any sincerity from the Chinese Communist Party
could only help Hu Jintao. As a
matter of fact, the Chinese government does not admit that the Beijing trip was
a dialogue, but only claimed it was to the American and French governments,
thus cheating the presidents of both countries to make their decisions to
attend the Beijing Olympics.
The
Dalai Lama said that he was very disappointed in the Chinese government that
lacked the sincerity of dialogue; he even questioned if the
"Middle-Way" was a mistake.
He was also very disappointed that many Han Chinese do not understand
his sincerity, that the Chinese government's propaganda distorted his stand, as
well as confused the Chinese people.
He asked Mr. Wei as how to solve this problem.
Mr.
Wei stated first that the Han Chinese have been sympathetic to the Tibetans'
struggle for freedom, that a small group of overseas Chinese students'
fanaticism resulted from the false propaganda of the Chinese Communist Party,
and as a matter of fact, was organized by the Party, and does not represent the
majority of Han Chinese. The
Middle-Way approach was not false, but we should maintain our sincerity to the
Chinese people, not the Chinese Communist Party. We should let more Han Chinese know the real situation in
Tibet, and the real wish of the Tibetans.
Both
sides agreed that both should enhance cooperation and communication, because a
lack of communication could cause us to make mistakes, and be used by the
Chinese Communist extremists. The
democratization of the whole Chinese could likely be started from the changes
in Tibet, yet Tibet can not be successful alone -- only when all the people
work together to make the wholesome changes, shall there be the possibility of
solving the problems for all the parties.
Both sides decided to increase their activities together, to increase
the knowledge of people both inside and outside China. They agreed that to break the rumors
fabricated by the Chinese Communist Party both inside China and in the
international media is important.
Huang Ciping told the Dalai Lama that as a matter of the fact, in the
past especially the last 4 months, Mr. Wei has put a good effort in doing so,
especially with the international news media and in the US Congress.
