Wei
Jingsheng Invited to Speak at the Joint Press Conference of the US
Congressional Human Rights Caucus and the U.S. Commission on International
Religious Freedom
On
July 30, 2008, Mr. Wei Jingsheng was invited to speak at the joint press
conference of the US Congressional Human Rights Caucus and the U.S. Commission
on International Religious Freedom, which presented human rights issues
including religious freedom concerns in the People's Republic of China.
The
press conference was held in room HC-7 of the Capitol building. Co-chair of the caucus James P.
McGovern hosted the meeting.
Several Congressional members participated in the conference, as well as
several members of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and
some other prominent Chinese human rights activists who also met with President
Bush on the previous day, namely Harry Wu and Rebiya Kadeer.
In
his speech, Mr. Wei recalled his meeting with President Bush when he expressed
his objection to the President's going to the Beijing Olympics, a sure action
supporting the Chinese Communist tyrannous government. Once again, he emphasized and strongly
urged that the President must keep talking about human rights in China as he
promised to them in the meeting, should he go to Beijing.
Several
Chinese and English news media interviewed Mr. Wei afterwards, including Radio
Free Asia Cantonese service. The
interview is available at:
