Wei
Jingsheng Discussing Google and Internet Freedom Issue on Voice of America's TV
Program "Pro and Con"
On
February 5, 2010, WEI Jingsheng was invited to appear at Voice of America's
"Pro and Con" TV/Radio/Internet Program hosted by Ning Xin. During the program, he discussed and
debated the Google issue with the visiting scholar of American University, Mr.
WANG Wenfeng of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations. The main subject of the discussion was
about if Google and other foreign IT companies should fellow the laws set up by
the Chinese Communist government.
Mr.
Wei pointed out that:
1)
Under the one party dictatorship of the Chinese Communist Party, the Chinese
people and even governmental officials still want to get real and complete
information. Yet, Google's retreat
will mean a full-scale retreat of information in China.
2)
Whenever the Chinese government was criticized by the international society for
its human rights record, it would claim that the international society lack of
qualification of criticizes.
However, the criticism of the international society has been one of the
important factors to push for the progress of human rights and freedom in
China.
3)
The Chinese Communist Party always claims that people must sacrifice freedom of
speech to meet the need of food and clothing. Yet, these people in the countries with free press and free
speech do not really have to sacrifice their freedom for food and clothing,
because freedom and material life are not in conflict.
4)
In regarding the excuse of "if we do not block the information, the other
will do it anyway", Mr. Wei pointed out that this is just an excuse lack
of moral standard without sound ground.
He said: "You can not say that 'if I do not violate the law,
someone else will do so', or 'if I do not steal, there is someone else steal
anyway."
Finally,
Wei Jingsheng emphasized the need for the US Congress to pass the related laws.
