Fu Shenqi's Speech at the Dinner Party in Celebration of Wei Jingsheng's 60th Birthday and Photos of the Celebration

Note by the editor: May 20, 2010 was the 60th birthday of Wei Jingsheng.  On that day, many human rights activists inside of China talked to Wei Jingsheng directly to wish his a happy birthday and to continue the undertaking of Chinese democracy and human rights.  Later, about 60 friends gathered together at a celebration in Washington DC area, on May 22, 2010.  Some of them came from as far away as Chicago, Connecticut, and New York.  The dinner party sponsored by several close friends included a photo exhibition and a video show composed of photos of Wei Jingsheng with family and friends, as well as interviews and speeches, specially made for this birthday.  During the party, friends made moving public speeches and inspiring private talks in admiration of Wei Jingsheng's contribution in thoughts and actions toward Chinese freedom and democracy.  At the end of the party, participating friends received gifts and had them autographed by Wei Jingsheng.  These gifts included Wei Jingsheng's book "Courage to Stand Alone - Letters from Prison", "Heroes Bring Glory to the Place - Wei Jingsheng" -- a 5 part TV series DVD by the New Tang Dynasty TV, and copies of artworks depicting Wei Jingsheng and other human rights activists.  All the received private donations were forwarded to the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, a US tax-exempt and non-profit organization.

The following is the speech by Mr. Fu Shenqi, one of several friends from New York who attended the party.

  __  __  __

Dear friends, new or old:

My name is Fu Shenqi.  I am very happy to get together with all of you here today, in celebration of Wei Jingsheng's 60th birthday.  Today, I am representing the Chinese Democratic Party National Convention, and its co-chairmen Wang Youcai and Wang Juntao.  We wish a happy birthday to Wei Jingsheng, the flag bearer of the democracy movement and the chairman of the advisory board of the Chinese Democratic Party National Convention.  We wish Mr. Wei continued health and more contributions to the undertaking of Chinese democracy!

By the way, I need to talk about a regretted matter I had concerning Wei Jingsheng.  It was more than 31 years ago when I received a booklet "Wei Jingsheng's biography" from friends in Beijing (while I was in Shanghai).  I started immediately to transcribe and copy it.  However, only after I had distributed all of my booklets, I found out that I made a mistake by putting an additional point in the word of "biography".  For this mistake, I have been deeply regretful since then.

In reviewing the history of the modern democracy movement in China in the past 30 some years, I have the feeling as described by poet Li Bai more than 1200 years ago: "As we review our path, we see a vast and hazy covered bluish green hillside".  I totally agree with what Wei Jingsheng just said: "We do not have any reason to self-belittle".  We have already played a remarkable checks and balances function to the rulers; we have already contributed to the social progress in the Chinese society; we shall carry more historic responsibility to the democratic transition in China.  As the 1911 Revolution reaches its century mark, I want to say: "Democracy has yet to be realized; Comrades must work hard together!"  I wish all of us work together: to end the one-party dictatorship; to realize constitutionalism and democracy.

Today, on the birthday commemoration book, I wrote the following famous poem by Cao Cao of 1800 years ago.  I am reading it here again:

An old warhorse cherishes further exploration,

With a long term goal of the thousand mile journey;

As the martyr reaches his later age,

Lofty inspiration carries on!

I wish Wei Jingsheng will fight for another round of 60 years, to watch the overturn of the universe with smiles.

Thank you all.

志在千里;
