The
Way Out for China (Part XX): The Lessons We Learn from the Chinese Democratic
Movement
--
by Wei Jingsheng
After
I talked about the damages to the democratic movement and the opposition by
various kinds of spies and agents of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), there
were a lot of friends who communicated with me via Internet and phone
conversations to state their doubt and make inquiries: Would the undercover agents
really cause that much damage? Why
haven't we seen any report?
Without enough evidence it is hard to judge who are spies, etc. All of the above illustrates that
indeed people really care about the damaging activities caused by the CCP
spies, as well as shows that their activities are more successful than an
army. In particular, when the
targets of the CCP are not what they could use the military police for, the
functioning of their spies becomes the determining factor. As a matter of fact, many of our
friends inside China have watched enough of these kinds of subjects in the
movie and TV shows recently.
However, I will still give a few examples here to illustrate the
severity of this problem.
Regarding
the intelligence and spying capacity of the CCP, we have learned a lot. More and more are exposed via means of
the Internet nowadays. According
to these historic materials, even back in the time of civil war in 1940's
between the Chinese Communist Party and the Kuomintang, there were CCP intelligence
officers lurking in various levels of military and political institutes of the
Kuomintang from as low as advisors in the army, to as high as in the command
center. Often, Chiang Kai-shek's
army was not the first to get military deployment instructions; the Communist
Party's intelligence unit was first.
How could Chiang win this battle?
Because this kind of public information can be found online, I will not
talk about it much more.
I
will only recommend a book, the Chinese-born British writer Jung Chang's
"Mao: The Unknown Story."
It took her ten years of effort, and traveling to many archives of
Communist China, Taiwan, the Soviet Union and other socialist countries, as
well as visiting a number of people, which exposed many historic facts that are
hard to believe. The descriptions
of the Chinese Communist agents are breathtaking and incredible. It is worth it to us to ponder about
is: is not the so-called argument of no CCP undercover work just a form of
cheating along with self-deception?
Reading
Jung Chang and Zhang Yihe's books would help you to realize: how could we get
at the evidence in the file cabinets nowadays hidden in the CCP secret
service? The former East German
opposition leader told me that after the fall of the Communist Party, the
secret archives proved that about one third of members of their secret
organizations worked for the secret service of East Germany's government, of
which many were informers.
The
well-known writer Milan Kundera, whom most Chinese scholars still worship even
now, was also an informer to the secret services by selling his comrades to
protect himself. We can imagine:
why did the opposition of the Soviet bloc countries have so many years of hard
work and bloodshed, yet still need the international situation to overthrow the
tyranny of the Communist Party?
People lacking a guard against the Communist spying activities were the
main reason for failure.
These
people would frequently ask for the so-called evidence. Without enough evidence we cannot
prevent agents. This fell exactly
into the fallacies spread by the CCP secret service in an effort to deceive the
kind-hearted people. Under normal
circumstances, determining the guilt of a person should follow the principle of
a presumption of innocence.
Presumption of innocence is not to say that one person must be certainly
BE innocent when there is a lack of evidence. In normal times, one chooses the lesser harm to let the
guilty one passed through, instead of wronging a good person. Once convicted, a person's life is
ruined. Wrongly convicting an
innocent person would result in more damage to the society. So justice must be take the direction
of the presumption of innocence.
However,
in other matters, mechanically applying the presumption of innocence would be
foolish. Putting aside the secret
agent issue which often lacks sufficient evidence, even acting out less
important things such as business or chess, one still should not be a fool like
the Mr. Dong Guo in the Chinese fable who offered the wounded wolf a shelter
from the hunter, yet eventually got bitten by the wolf. If a chess player only believes the
other side has a conspiracy when he loses a piece, then for sure that is a 100%
bad player. If a businessman
cannot guess the plot from his competitors, he would be unlikely to survive
either.
If
the Mongolian gazelles and rabbits insist that they will not waste their
strength to run away until they see the evidence of the wolves nearby, we would
not see any more of these Mongolian gazelles and rabbits left in this
world. To make a joke that really
is not so funny: the faction that is demanding extreme evidence either has
their intelligence lower than the rabbits and Mongolian gazelles, or argues
from an ulterior motive.
Humans
love to raise themselves and think their wisdom is far more than that of small
animals. In fact, sometimes it
really is not true. Even
within this not so big circle of the pro-democracy movement in recent years,
there were some people who made mistakes that rabbits would not make, thus
resulting in years in prison.
In
1992, several heroes including Hu Shigen and Liu Jingsheng were trying to
organize an opposition party and independent workers' union in China, despite
the atmosphere of red terror in China.
Because they were anxious to expand their organizations, as well as from
their kind nature, they lowered their vigilance slightly towards the undercover
agents. The result was that at
least two special agents got into the core leadership of the 16 people which
ultimately resulted in the true leaders being put behind bars for more than a
decade. Nowadays, we know who the
undercover agents were yet we still do not have the evidence enabling us to
prove their guilt in court.
If
one insists that there is no evidence of secret agents for the CCP, I will give
you a proof. Many people are
familiar with the case of Yang Zili.
The related undercover agent Li YuZhou could not take the tortured
conscience anymore. So he fled to
Thailand and exposed his whole story.
We may want to read this real story online to see how the CCP secret
agents combat unscrupulously against people with lofty ideals.
Some
people say that overseas in the free world is a benevolent paradise. Everyone is of great kindness and
should not be suspected of being CCP spies, and even if they were, they could
be persuaded to be beneficial for the democrats. Mr. Wang Bingzhang, the well-known overseas pro-democracy
leader, was this kind of person.
As a result, not only was his reputation ruined by a bunch of agents
around him, but also eventually he was tricked and sent to prison for a life
sentence in China by the CCP agents he trusted. It was too late to regret.
Mr.
Wang Bingzhang's lesson is exactly the lesson that the Chinese opposition both
inside China and abroad must accept.
Not being alerted to the sabotage activities of the CCP undercover
agents, we could never organize any opposition group. Thus, we would be unable to truly protect the rights and
interests of the people, and unable to overthrow the tyranny of the Communist
Party. Even after the overthrow
the CCP, we must be wary of a newly generated, disguised post-communist
dictatorship, as is in the present Russia.
Even
the domestic and international non-political, non-governmental organizations
should also pay attention to the destructive effects of the Communist
Party. The Chinese Communist Party
knows that it is an unpopular ruler and that nobody believes the CCP. It also knows that the oppressed people
would overthrow its tyranny whenever there is the opportunity. Thus, the CCP is a ruling clique which
completely lacks self-confidence except through its agent network.
This
kind of ruling clique has a common characteristic that is unscrupulous. The common feature of these
unscrupulous rulers is the extensive use of various types of agents. From the high-class agents described by
Jung Chang to high-class intellectuals who are really lower-level agents as
described by Zhang Yihe, we must be vigilant and guard against all these
varieties. Three decades of
China's democracy movement has already learned too many lessons. We do not want to put another batch of
good comrades in jail to be tortured because of our uncertainty of suspicion of
others. We do not want to let the
Chinese people continue to suffer disasters just because we want to pretend
that we are gentlemen.
That
Mr. Dong Guo in the Chinese fable was not a bad man. But his intransigence sometimes could have even worse effect
than the bad guys. Because people
like Mr. Dong Guo are not bad people, their confusion could be even more
deceptive than that of the CCP agents.
Not only we must guard against fraudsters, but also to guard against
being cheated by the indirect deception of Mr. Dong Guo.
