Wei Jingsheng Mourns Former President of Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary), Mr. Yew Chor Eng (penname: Zhong Heng)

[New Tang Dynasty, August 30, 2010] On August 28, the well-known dissident Wei Jingsheng made a special visit to Calgary, Canada, mourning the former president of Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary), Mr. Yew Chor Eng.  Please view our report from Calgary.

On the afternoon of the 28th, Wei Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, and Huang Ciping, Secretary-General, went to the Queen's Park Cemetery in the northwest district of Calgary to honor the former president of Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary), Mr. Yew Chor Eng.  They were accompanied by the widow and daughter of Mr. Eng, as well as the well known democratic activist Lu Decheng, and Mr. Allan Cheung of the Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary).

Wei Jingsheng gave Mr. Eng extremely high remarks.  He thinks that Mr. Eng's spirit for Chinese democracy deserves the respect of all the Chinese.

Wei said: "In the circle of the overseas democratic movement, there are not many people like Mr. Zhong Heng, so straightforward, so hating evil as an enemy, and having the courage to uphold his beliefs.  I think the most important thing about Mr. Zhong Heng was, he only asked if a matter should be done or not, instead of questioning if that matter could be done. No matter how strong and mighty the opponent was, he followed the ancient Chinese saying: Although they have an army of tens of millions, I will fight against them.  He had this spirit."

Mr. Eng was also named Zhong Heng.  In the 1950's when the Chinese Communist Party asked for "free airing of views", he was incriminated due to his outspokenness, and received more than 2 decades of persecution by being sent to "reform-through-labor" camp in Qinghai.  In the 1970's, he immigrated to Canada.  In comparison to the Western democratic system, he felt deeply that the source of all the disasters for the Chinese people are due to the dictatorial tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party.  He started to make outcries for the Chinese democratic movement, and devoted himself to promoting China's democracy movement and social progress.
