Liu Xiaobo's Dilemma and Reality in China

-- Ciping Huang's Comments at Canadian Broadcasting Corp's TV, Connect With Mark Kelley

On October 8, 2010, in response to jailed China dissident Liu Xiaobo wins Nobel Peace Prize, activists Chai Ling and Huang Ciping were invited to make comments at Canadian Broadcasting Corp's TV, Connect With Mark Kelley, which was broadcasted at 8pm that evening.

The following was Huang Ciping's comments.

On one side, of course, people in general would think that this Nobel Peace Prize is long overdue to a Chinese dissident. By awarding this prize to a Chinese dissident, it would highlight Chinese human rights problems, and may encourage Chinese democratic progress and political reform. However, on the other side, Mr. Liu Xiaobo represents the moderate reformists, who would try his best not to offend the government. Yet, even so, he got an 11 year sentence which he should not have had. This itself reveals how bad human rights abuses are in China. Indeed, it is important for us to view China's problem through this person and this award.

However, we must also look at the situation this way: China's political situation is so severe that the Chinese government would not want political reform themselves, unless there are pressures going on. So, when the moderate reformists tried to cooperate with the Chinese government instead of taking a hard line, the government would rather take them instead of hardliners. The problem in China now is that China is ready to explode like a hotpot of pressure, due to things like the extreme disparity of rich and poor, and all the other social problems. So the softer you are, the less likely the Chinese government wants to do any political change because they do not give up their power, and they do not want to change anything if they do not have to. In that sense, by pleading "I have no enemy" as Liu Xiaobo did, it will only have the opposite effect, because the majority of Chinese would not agree with that or simply could not tolerate anymore, and ultimately that could lead China into revolution.

So this statement of "I have no enemy" may sound appealing and even romantic to people who are living in a safe and comfortable environment in democratic countries such as Norway, but will not really convince most of Chinese, especially workers and peasants in China who have been suffering under the Communist regime. Average folks will have a hard time to accept people who speak in this tune. If you ask these average folks why they are suffering, they will point you to their "enemy" - Chinese Communist autocracy. The ideology of "no enemy" sounds nice, but does not reflect China's reality and will not solve China's problem. After all, if there is no enemy, how could Mr. Liu, a mild reformist, be put in prison for 11 years?

2010年10月8日，活动家柴玲和黄慈萍就中国被囚异议人士刘晓波获诺贝尔和平奖，分别应邀在加拿大广播公司的电视节目“连接凯利马克”上作评述。该节目在当晚八时播出。

以下是黄慈萍的相关评述：

一方面，一般人认为这诺贝尔和平奖早就应该授予中国持不同政见者。通过将这个奖颁给中国的持不同政见者，它突出反映了中国的人权问题，也希望它能鼓励中国的民主进程和政治改革。但在另一边，代表温和改良派的刘晓波先生，并不希望得罪政府。然而，即使如此，他被判11年刑期，尽管这不应该。这件事本身就揭示出中国人权是多么地受到侵犯。的确，重要的是，通过他本人和这个奖，我们看到中国的问题。

这种“我没有敌人”的情怀听上去的确很诱人、甚至很浪漫，尤其是对生活在安全和舒适的民主国家中的挪威人而言。但这种说法决不会使中共铁蹄下人权被践踏的大多数中国人，尤其是贫困的工人和农民信服。说话的人也很难让一般老百姓接受。如果你问他们，为什么他们生活在痛苦之中，他们会向你指出他们的“敌人”--中共专制。“没有敌人”的思想听起来不错，但不但不能反映中国的现实，也无法解决中国的问题。毕竟，如果真的“没有敌人”，那作为温和改良派的刘先生，为什么会被判刑11年？
