The
Wei Jingsheng Foundation Announces the Seventh Annual "Wei Jingsheng
Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" Award
December
5, 2010
Since
2004, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation has awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese
Democracy Champion Prize" every year on December 5th. In the last six years the awarding of
this prize has had reverberations around the world. Those persisting in the fight in China, who are at any
moment in life-threatening danger, have been thus encouraged and consoled.
As
can be expected, those who nominate a candidate believe the person they have
nominated has made a great contribution to the cause of Chinese Democracy. Nominating someone is in and of itself
a way to commend all champions of democracy, including those unknown, untiring
democracy heroes who do not concern themselves with fame and fortune. We have great respect for their
strength of spirit and the sacrifices they have made. As in the past 6 years, this year's award gives greatest
consideration to those individuals and groups who have persisted in their work
on the domestic democracy movement inside China.
As
the Chinese Communist dictatorship has ruled and enslaved the Chinese people
for six decades now, the Chinese people are increasingly awakening. On the one hand, the tyranny of the CCP
has intensified; on the other hand, the courage and behavior of the people
against tyranny are also increasing.
The inhuman repression has made some people give in, some finally to
join interest groups of the Communist Party, and some even to hunt the others
despite themselves being the victims of the werewolves. Yet, more people have kept their
conscience and made personal and family sacrifices for the interests of the
Chinese people. Facing imprisonment
and suppression, they did not yield, did not compromise. They maintained their ideology,
receiving respect and trust from their own comrades and the people. This courage is in sharp contrast to
those shameless ones who flatter the Communist authority in seeking a
relaxation from the regime, even secretly cooperate with the regime in an
effort to seek fame and fortune.
Here,
the Wei Jingsheng Foundation "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion
Prize" Judging Committee announces this year's prize to be awarded to just
such a brave fighter -- Mr. Xu Wanping, who is serving a 12-year sentence in
prison. His indomitable actions
and tenacious will show character we can all learn from.
Xu
Wanping, from Chongqing of Sichuan Province, was born on April 11, 1961. Because of his participation in the
1989 democracy movement and establishing the "Chinese Action Party,"
in 1990 he was sentenced to 8 years with 5 years of deprived political rights for
the criminal charges of "counter-revolutionary propaganda and
incitement" and "organizing counter-revolutionary groups". After he was released in 1997, he was
arrested again due to his effort to build the "Chinese Democratic
Party" and sent to 3 years "Re-education through Labor"
camp. After Xu Wanping was
released from that camp, he still held his beliefs and continued to organize
and participate in democracy and freedom activities for the Chinese
people. He tried to organize the
labor movement, and wrote pro-democracy articles. He was arrested again in April 2005 and was sentenced on
December 21 of that year to 12 years with 4 years of deprivation of political
rights under the charges of "subversion of state power".
For
more details about this democracy champion, please read the prize dedication by
Ms. HUANG Ciping: "I shall leave my heart to shine in the history."
This
year's recognition of Mr. Xu Wanping is also a recognition of all the brave
fighters against the inhuman tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party. It shows our respect to these witnesses
of the brutality of the Communist tyranny. These people include the indomitable and tortured Gao
Zhisheng, Guo Feixiong, and Yan Zhengxue.
Not only will these people never get any "preferential treatment in
prison"; but they also received continued persecution even when they were
outside of the prison. There are
also people who suffered so much persecution and abuse that it led to illness
and dying, such as Li Hong and Yu Dongyue, et al. There are many prisoners of conscience subject to
persecution by serving long sentences, such as Yang Tianshui (served 12 years,
with a total sentence of 22 years), Hu Shigen (sentenced to 20 years, served 16
years), Yu Dongyue (sentenced to 20 years, served 16.5 years), Liu Jingsheng
(sentenced to 15 years, served 12.5 years), Hada (served 15 years), Hu Mingjun
(sentenced to 11 years), Wang Sen (sentenced to 10 years), Qin Yongmin (served
a total of 22 years), Liu Xianbin (total sentence of 12 years), Wu Yilong
(serving 11 years), etc. They are
all outstanding representatives of human rights and the democracy movement
advocators in China, thus receiving even more suppression and abuse by the
Chinese Communist regime.
In
the prisons of the Chinese Communist regime, not only are there these
well-known comrades who suffer much physical and mental violence and abuse, but
there are also many more political prisoners and people persecuted because of
religious beliefs. These people
will not hypocritically praise the "human rights progress of the Chinese
Communists". Examples are Mr.
Zhao Lianhai who was just sent to prison because he advocated for tens of
millions of "kidney stone babies" due to tainted milk; the state
cadre who received a life sentence because he sympathized with and helped North
Korean refugees and defectors; Tibetans imprisoned because they had a photo of
their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama; petitioners whose rights were violated;
people who suffered religious persecution as underground Christian church
members and Falun Gong practitioners; and so on.
We
are here to honor Xu Wanping, in recognition of his unyielding courage, but
also in recognition of tens thousands of outstanding people that he
represents. They are good role
models for us all.
This
year's award money donated by individuals totaled $2000. Those who donated money are donating
their passion and belief in Chinese democracy. For this passion we want to express our deepest gratitude. In addition we also want to express our
appreciation to all those people who recommended nominees for our Seventh
Annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize." We thank all of you for your support
and encouragement.
