of Chinese Democracy" and the "Nelson Mandela of China": Wei
Jingsheng to Deliver Public Lecture In Reston (Event Alert)
The
Forrest for Senate campaign is proud to host Wei Jingsheng, an award winning
human rights activist and prominent Chinese dissident, writer, and Nobel Peace
Prize nominee. Wei will be
visiting Reston to deliver a lecture entitled "Human Rights and the
Economic Consequences of the U.S./China Trade Deficit". Wei will deliver a public lecture at
7:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 30th at Hidden Creek Country Club (Fairway Room),
located at 1711 Clubhouse Road in Reston.
Wei,
61, served 18 years in Chinese prisons because of his outspoken campaign for
democracy and human rights in China.
He has been awarded the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Human Rights Award,
the National Endowment for Democracy Award and the Olof Palme Memorial Prize;
and was a fellow at Columbia University. He has been praised in numerous places with titles such as
"Father of Chinese Democracy" and "Nelson Mandela of
China."
"Wei
Jingsheng is truly an inspiration.
I am honored to have met this great leader and to be able to bring him
to Reston for this important lecture," said Patrick Forrest, Fulbright
Chair for North American Studies and Republican Nominee for the Virginia State
Senate in District 32. "My
first job in the Federal government was as an Asylum Officer. After working in Taiwan and China I
developed an interest on matters concerning religious persecution and human
rights, which I have pursued through my research at Fulbright and in my
professional career. Human rights
abuses and religious persecution are issues close to my heart."
Wei
garnered international attention in 1997 when he was released in exile to the
United States just weeks after Chinese President Jiang Zemin visited President
Clinton. As reported in The New
York Times, China cited medical reasons for Wei's release, but the release was
seen as a gesture to encourage Clinton's 1998 visit to China. In 2008, he was chosen as one of the 15
Champions of World Democracy by the Europe-based magazine A Different View.
Wei
Jingsheng is the best-known Chinese human rights and democracy fighter and is
the leader for the opposition against the Chinese Communist dictatorship. He was sentenced to jail twice for a
total of more than 18 years due to his democracy activities, including a ground
breaking and well publicized essay he wrote in 1978: "the Fifth
Modernization". He is the
author of "Courage to Stand Alone -- letters from Prison and Other
Writings", which compiles his articles written initially on toilet papers
in jail.
"We
all have to do our part to keep reminding our society that these abuses are
still happening all around the world. Safeguarding the fundamental rights and
freedom of every human being is an issue that I believe needs to be shouted
loud and clear," Forrest added.
"I believe it is our duty as a nation born of those impulses to
inspire and encourage those who do not embrace such liberties to do so. Our trade and commerce alliance with
China is invaluable, and we are grateful for this relationship. However, we must never forget that
liberty, freedom, and the security of human rights continue to bean aspiration
not yet fully discovered in China.
It is very difficult to have free trade with countries that are not
free."
Wei
was first imprisoned for his 1978 essay, "The Fifth Modernization,"
in which he suggested that Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping's efforts to modernize
the country would not succeed until the government itself modernized and became
a democracy. Wei, then an
electrician for the Beijing zoo, signed the essay and posted it on the
Democracy Wall. During the late
1970s, others had anonymously expressed their beliefs in democracy on the
Democracy Wall in Beijing, including artists, intellectuals and workers.
This
