Recalling Mr. Yew Chor Eng (i.e. Zhong Heng), the former president of the Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary) Part 1 -- A Special Memorial Series by the New Tang Dynasty TV

On August 21, 2009, the former president of the Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary), Mr. Yew Chor Eng (i.e. Zhong Heng) passed away at the age of 80. As a well-known activist who devoted his whole life to promoting Chinese democracy and social progress, his death made those people who pursue democracy and freedom worldwide feel deeply saddened.

In the Chinatown of Calgary in Canada, many people still remember Mr. Eng. For nearly two decades, especially in cold winter, an old man always stood on street corners to distribute newspapers promoting democracy, even in the snowstorms at minus twenty or thirty degrees C. Under the influence of this old man's actions, more and more Chinese with conscience joined the Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary). Together, they spread the truth, called for conscience, and opposed the Communist tyranny.

On August 28, 2010, Wei Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, and Huang Ciping, Secretary-General, made a special trip to the Queen's Park Cemetery in Calgary to honor Mr. Yew Chor Eng. They were accompanied by the widow and daughter of Mr. Eng, as well as the well known democratic activist Lu Decheng, and Mr. Allan Cheung of the Movement for Democracy in China (Calgary).

Wei Jingsheng said: "I think the most important thing about Mr. Zhong Heng was that he only asked if a matter should be done or not, instead of questioning if that matter could be done. No matter how strong and mighty the opponent was, he followed the ancient Chinese saying: Although they have an army of tens of millions, I will fight against them. He had this spirit!"

"The Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition is exactly doing so, following this spirit. We ask if the matter should be done or not, instead of will it be successful or not. After all, when we try our best to do something, we may not be unsuccessful. That year in Calgary, we were able to defeat the Chinese consulate and the mayor who was in favor of the Chinese Communist Party. That made everyone see the backbone of the Chinese people. They got to know that there are so many people with persistent efforts for democracy. We the Chinese are not all snobs who only care about the best interests for ourselves."

"I could feel the righteousness from Mr. Zhong Heng, who will not make comprises with wrongs. He would say things straightly, which made those people who are afraid or selfish embarrassed. This was one of the major characteristics of him. Most of us are often unable to do that."

"I think his life of striving was worthy. As a person of integrity, there are so many friends who remember him. That is the value of life. Zhong Heng's life really represents more than a decade of the overseas democratic movement for China. Often we might not appear to be much, but during the important moments and on key issues we stand firm, we represent the Chinese people. Of course, the Chinese people support us."

Mr. Lu Decheng introduced further that the democracy movement in Calgary could carry on because of Mr. Zhong Heng, with his more than twenty years of consistent and never retreating spirit. During this period, there were also some wavering thoughts and ambivalent words from the others. However, due to the influence of Mr. Zhong Heng's perseverance, people in Calgary did not play up to the powerful, surrender, or disband like some in other places. It is this spirit that led Mr. Zhong Heng to join the Christian Church in his later years and became a qualified Christian.

Mr. Wei commented: "Many people say the overseas democratic movement does not have roots. You are not a grass-roots political movement, and the people in Chinatown do not support you. I think this is entirely wrong. Our roots are not in a Chinatown under the control of the Communist Party of China. Our roots are mainly in two places: one is inside China, among many millions of oppressed Chinese people; the other is in the West, where democracy and freedom are basic values. These people support us sincerely from their hearts. So with the people we can unite with we must unite, and with the people who do not want to be united with us, why should we waste our effort?"

"I think this spirit of Zhong Heng is particularly noticeable. He did not care what the people in Chinatown might say. He was doing what he thought to be right, and accomplished it as well. What can be more practical? Zhong Heng is the backbone of this group of people in Calgary."

"I especially liked Zhong Heng and always considered him as my best friend. That is because in the circle of the overseas democratic movement, there are not many people like Mr. Zhong Heng, so straightforward, so hating evil as an enemy, and so having the courage to uphold his beliefs! For two decades now, the overseas democracy movement could carry on due to a group of people like Mr. Zhong Heng. Do not ask what can be done; just ask what should be done. With the support of this spirit, we are able to persevere in such difficult circumstances.

《回忆吴耀初（钟衡）先生》（之一）

二零零九年八月二十一日。加拿大卡尔加利市中国民主促进会前任会长吴耀初（钟衡）先生辞世，享年八十岁。作为一名将毕生精力投入到推动中国民主与社会进步的著名民主人士，他的辞世令海内外崇尚和追求民主、自由的人士深感痛惜。

在加拿大卡尔加利市的唐人街，许多人依然记得吴耀初先生的身影。近二十年来，特别是在那些严寒的冬日，一位老人总是站在街角发送宣传民主的小报，即使在零下二、三十度的暴风雪下也从不间断。在这位老人行动的感召下，越来越多有良知的华人加入了卡尔加利市民主促进会。他们共同传播真相、呼唤良知、对抗中共暴政。

二零一零年八月二十八日，中国民主运动海外联席会议主席魏京生先生和秘书长黄慈萍女士，专程前往加拿大卡尔加利市的皇后墓园悼念吴耀初先生。陪同前往的还有：吴耀初先生的夫人及女儿，著名民主人士鲁德成先生，以及卡尔加利市民主促进会的张振龙先生。

魏京生先生说：我认为钟衡先生最重要的一点就是，他只问这件事情该不该做，不问这件事情能不能做成。不管对方有多么强大，如古人所说得那样：虽千万人吾往矣。他有这种精神！

我们联席会议正是遵循着这种精神去做。只问事情该不该做，不计较能不能成功。只要努力去做，也不一定就不成功。那一年在你们卡尔加里，不是就把中国大使馆和亲共的卡尔加利市长弄得稀里哗啦的嘛。那使所有人都看到了中国人的骨气，知道还有这么一批坚持不懈在为民主努力的人，中国人不都是见风使舵的势利小人。

我觉得钟衡先生一身的正气，绝对不跟你缓和。他有什么就直截了当地说出来，让那些有点儿软弱的朋友们不好意思。这是他的一个特别大的特点。我们大多数人往往做不到这一点。

他奋斗的一生我觉得值。作为一个正直的人，有那么多的朋友记住了他，这就活得有价值。钟衡的历程代表了海外民运十几年的过程。平时可能看不到什么，但是在重要的时刻和关键的事情上，我们站稳了立场，我们代表着中国人民。老百姓当然就支持我们。

鲁德成先生介绍，钟衡先生二十多年坚持不懈、永不后退的精神，使得整个卡尔加利市的民主运动能够坚持下来。这期间也有一些动摇的想法，中间的言论等等。但在钟衡先生坚持不懈的精神影响下，没有使卡尔加利像其它一些地方那样趋炎附势，走向投降或者散伙。正是这种精神，让钟衡先生在晚年加入了基督教会，成为一名合格的基督教徒。

魏京生先生评论说：很多人说，你们海外民运没有根，你们不是有草根的政治运动，中国城的那些人都不支持你们。我认为这个说法是完全错误的。我们的草根不在受到中共控制的中国城。我们的草根主要有两个：一个在国内，这就是千百万受压迫的中国老百姓；另一个就是西方的人民，民主自由是他们的基本价值观，他们发自内心地支持我们。能团结的人我们一定要团结，不愿意和我们团结的人，我们何必去费那么大劲呢！

我觉得钟衡的这种精神特别明显。他不管中国城的人怎么说，他认为这个事情对，他就做了，而且做成了。什么叫做实事，这就是实事。钟衡就是卡尔加里这群人的主心骨。

我特别喜欢钟衡，一直把他当作我最好的朋友。因为在海外民运这个圈子里边，象钟衡这么耿直，这么嫉恶如仇，而且又这么坚持的人，不是很多！海外民运二十多年来能够坚持下来，就是因为有一批像钟衡这样的人。不问能不能成，只问该不该做。在这种精神的支撑下，才能在这么艰难的环境下坚持下来。
