The Wei Jingsheng Foundation Announces the Eighth Annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" Award

December 5, 2011

Since 2004, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation has awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" every year on December 5th.  In the last seven years the awarding of this prize has had reverberations around the world.  Those persisting in the fight in China, who are at any moment in life-threatening danger, have thus been encouraged and consoled.

As can be expected, those who nominate a candidate believe the person they have nominated has made a great contribution to the cause of Chinese Democracy.  Nominating someone in and of itself is a way to commend all champions of democracy, including those unknown, untiring democracy heroes who do not concern themselves with fame and fortune.  We have great respect for their strength of spirit and the sacrifices they have made.  As in the past 7 years, this year's award gives greatest consideration to those individuals and groups who have persisted in their work on the domestic democracy movement inside China.

Nowadays, the conflict between the Chinese Communist dictatorial regime has intensified day and day.  The mass group protests in China have reached to more than 180,000 events annually.  On the one hand is the Communist Party's last-ditch refusal of political and social reform; on the other is the people's awakening from the time of the 1989 democracy movement when they were still hoping the Communist Party could find its conscience.  The Chinese people have recognized the innate and brutal nature of the Communist one-party dictatorship which is just serving a privileged few.  As a result, there will come an irreconcilable conflict between the Communist officials and the Chinese public, which will lead to a democratic wave that is unstoppable and even more extensive and thorough than the "Jasmine Revolution" in North Africa.

When the democratic revolution in China in full swing, bloodshed will be inevitable.  Those who adhere to democratic principles over the years will put what they preach into practice.  They will be the pioneers in the forefront, and sacrifice themselves to become the stepping-stones for later generations.  These martyrs are fearless and would sacrifice their freedom and lives, yet the future generations may not even know of their deeds.  In the eyes of the opportunists who want fame and money, these martyrs lived too poor and are not worth it.  But these martyrs' sacrifice is their greatness.  The achievement eventually harvested by their lives will benefit millions of people.

The invisible monument formed by these martyrs will have one person's name sculptured -- "the crew cut" Liu Di.  The Wei Jingsheng Foundation announces today that Liu Di is the recipient of this year's "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize", in recognition of his leadership in the 1976 April 5 Movement in China.  Unfortunately, Liu Di has just passed away.

Liu Di was born on July 6, 1950 and passed away on October 19, 2011.  He was sent to the countryside in Shanxi Province in 1968.  During the April 5 Movement in 1976, he led the people to protest at the southeast corner of TianAnMen Square where the Communist militia headquarters were located, and lead the chants of the demonstration.  He was named "the crew cut on TianAnMen Square" by the Communist Party's mouthpiece "People's Daily," placed on the wanted list in the whole country, and subsequently arrested.  During the Democracy Wall period, Mr. Liu worked as an editor for the private publication "Beijing Spring".  After the 4 June massacre in Beijing in 1989, Liu Di was arrested again.  He was closely monitored and supervised continuously by the Communist authority even after his release.  He suffered through many years of persecution, and thus was unable to get a job and always lived in poverty.

For more details about this democracy champion, please read the prize dedication by Ms. HUANG Ciping: "Noble Suffering, Fiery Soul."

This year's recognition of Mr. Liu Di is also a recognition of all the warriors of the April Fifth Movement of 1976, who collectively protested the Chinese Communist tyranny under the high pressure of Communist leader Mao Zedong.  It is their wave of protests that initiated the last 35 years of waves demanding for democracy in China.  In the past 35 years, Liu Di, as its representative, has done a lot of work unknown to most others.  He was not absent from any of these movements, from the 1978 Democracy Wall to the 1989 occupation of Tiananmen Square, until his last breath.

Liu Di exactly portrays the vast majority of Chinese warriors who were persistent yet kept low profiles.  Liu Di represents the image of the group leaders in China who put themselves at risk while striving for others.  This year's "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" nominations reflected this dedication, as several groups were nominated including "the 223 Chengdu group of the Chain-gate" and the JiaoMa Club, etc.

This phenomenon is an encouragement for us all.  The democratic movement will be a long-term undertaking.  It will not be able to be accomplished by one person, at one place and during one particular moment.  Only with our collective efforts we will create a better future for China.  Although our awardee Liu Di has passed away, we hope that his life can arouse the conscience of many.  This prize recognizes not just Liu Di, the individual and the generation of warriors he represents, but more Liu Di's spirit, of decades' of helping others yet not pursuing fame for himself.

This year's award money donated by individuals totaled $6000.  Those who donated money are donating their passion and belief in Chinese democracy.  For this passion we want to express our deepest gratitude.  In addition we also want to express our appreciation to all those people who recommended nominees for our eighth annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize," include the nominators who are the laureates of "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" from the previous years.  We thank all of you for your support and encouragement.
