The
Alumni of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) Remember
Fang Lizhi
2012-04-11
Fang
Lizhi, the astrophysicist who went into exile due to the 1989 pro-democracy
movement, suddenly died last weekend in the USA. Fang Lizhi is considered to have had a great impact on
Chinese students and the pro-democracy movement during the active-minded 1980s
in China.
Liu
Gang, who studied at both USTC and Beijing University took a class taught by
Fang Lizhi at USTC. He was sent to
jail due to the 1989 democracy movement, and later went into exile. He said at that time 1/3 of the
material in the physics books was printed in bold with the words of "the
great leaders". Some
professors would even lead the students in reading this material, and force the
students to recite it for exams.
However, Fang Lizhi suggested to students to skip over it and encouraged
students to dare to question, not to be bound by the "truth" created
by the Communist Party.
Li
Gang: "There were a couple dozen leaders for USTC, including Guo Moruo who
was the president for 20 years.
However, we are ashamed for a president like Guo, but took
Vice-President Fang as our pride.
He is a flagship of our pride.
Fang
Lizhi at 44 years old was the youngest fellow of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences (now known as "academician"). In early 1987, he was removed from the post of
Vice-President of the University of Science and Technology of China, and
expelled from the Communist Party along with three other prominent
intellectuals Zhang Xianyang, Liu Binyan, Wang Ruowang. Liu Gang believes that Fang Lizhi was
only following his academic spirit without much political intention.
Liu
Gang: "He thought of freedom of speech as a human birth right. For the development of science, people
must gather together and to discuss ideas freely. Without the exchange of ideas, we can not generate new
ideas."
Ciping
Huang, who earned high scores during the national college entrance exams and
was admitted as a prodigy child into the University of Science and Technology
of China told the reporter that the top students were often very picky about
the teachers' curriculum. However,
even the students who were not majoring in physics were willing to elect
Professor Fang's courses because not only could he make special relativity easy
to understand, he also accompanied his teaching with a lot of ancient Greek
philosophical and astronomical thought.
Ciping
Huang believes that USTC had a free atmosphere "away from the
emperors" due to its "sent down" location of Hefei in Anhui
Province. These top-notch students really excelled in both science and social
science. Yet they chose science in
those days with a strong sense of responsibility "to carry on as the
pillars of our country".
However, since the time that Fang Lizhi was suppressed and the Communist
leadership dropped in new presidents for the university, this university began
to collapse and decline.
Ciping
Huang: "When we were studying there, the University of Science and
Technology of China had the highest admission score in all of China, with more
than half of the students who had the highest score in their provinces came to
our university. But now it does
not have high ranking anymore."
Hu
Ping, chief editor of "Beijing Spring", mentioned that in the summer
of 1988 when Fang Lizhi attended a scientific conference, he was invited to
give a speech to the Chinese students and scholars at the Australian National
University in Canberra. The scene
was very warm. At that time, he
was praised as "China's Sakharov".
Hu
Ping: "Although it was suppressive in China during the 1980s, the climate
of the whole society was not the same.
The people who were more suppressed by the Communist regime became more
heroic in people's eyes and were particularly popular wherever they went."
Some
Western scholars in New York were also very concerned at the sudden death of
Fang Lizhi. After Fang Lizhi came
to the United States, he chose to live in Arizona and was more focused on
academic research. Hu Ping said
that in the past year, Fang Lizhi was seriously ill twice and
hospitalized. Last November,
Fang's heart, liver and kidney all had problems, and he was put in critical
care. But Fang recovered in a few
days. At his death, Fang Lizhi was
discussing with his colleagues through a computer about preparing for an
academic conference. Then the
person on the other end suddenly could not hear Fang's voice. His family was just absent for a little
more than 10 minutes. When they
returned, Fang's heart had already stopped beating.
Fang
Lizhi's funeral will be held in Tucson, Arizona on the 14th. On the 21st, there will be a memorial
service in New York.
The
above is a special correspondence by Zi Jing of Radio Free Asia reporting from
New York.
