Note
by the editor:
We
are pleased that Mr. Chen Guangcheng, his wife, and his children are free now,
due to international pressure including the US Congressional hearings of his
case. However, we must continue
our attention and caring for his other relatives and friends who helped him and
are still in China. We are especially concerned for Chen's mother, brother, and
his nephew who is in detention, charged with "attempted murder" due
to self-defense in his own home.
Below is one of many reports in English and Chinese on the latest
Congressional hearing of Chen Guangcheng's case.
Mr.
Wei Jingsheng, the Chinese Lech Walesa, Advises Chen Guangcheng to Get His Own
Lawyers for his Nephew Chen Kegui during the US Congress Hearing
(from
Boxun, May 17, 2012)
In
the afternoon of May 15, 2012, the U.S. Congress held its third hearing about
Chen Guangcheng, the blind lawyer who was persecuted by the Chinese Communist
regime. According to this
reporter, it is almost unheard of for the U.S. Congress to hold three hearings
in such a short time span (from December 2011 to May 2012) for an ordinary
Chinese citizen who is persecuted.
The
person who chaired yesterday's hearing was Representative Chris Smith, who
chairs the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Human Rights of House
Committee on Foreign Affairs.
People who testified at the Congressional hearing were: Mr. Wei
Jingsheng, who is praised as the Chinese Lech Walesa; Mr. Bob Fu, who has made
a significant contribution to rescue Chen Guangcheng and is a good friend of
former U.S. President George W. Bush; and Ms. Chai Ling, a student leader
during the 1989 Tiananmen Square demonstration. Reporters from several dozen international news media in
Washington reported the event.
Pastor
Bob Fu briefed the Congress on the latest progress about Chen Guangcheng's
case. Pastor Fu particularly
appealed to the U.S. government and the U.S. Congress to pay attention to Chen
Guangcheng's nephew Chen Kegui.
Reputed
as China's Lech Walesa, Wei Jingsheng took the opportunity to remind Chen
Guangcheng during Mr. Smith's phone call with Mr. Chen: "Do not accept the
lawyers provided by the Chinese Communist government, but get your own
lawyers..."
During
her dialogue with Chen, Chai Ling said excitedly: "Chen Guangcheng, on
behalf of four hundred million persecuted women sustaining arbitrary
sterilizations and abortions, as well as their relatives, I want to express our
highest salute to you. You are our
pride and we are proud of you. You
are our hope, and I hope that there are more Chinese to stand up like Chen
Guangcheng!"
After
the hearing, Wei Jingsheng and Congressman Smith accepted media interviews.
