VOA
Broadcast Live: Protests Upgraded in Front of the Chinese Consulate in New York
Reporter:
Hai-yin from New York
June
4, 2012 is the 23rd anniversary of the Chinese government mobilization of the
military to massacre the students who had peaceful demonstrations in Beijing's
Tiananmen Square. Chinese
democracy activists in exile, are holding "Do not forget June 4"
commemorations around the world.
On Monday in New York, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation and the Chinese
Liberal and Democratic Party had a demonstration in front the Chinese Consulate
General. At the same time, the
National Committee of the Chinese Democratic Party also displayed its PLA tank
model, which is moved from its protest location at Times Square on the previous
day, to the front of the Chinese Consulate General, as a way to show how brutal
the crackdown was that the Chinese government had against the demonstrators
back then.
Voice
of America broadcast the protest live in full length. In the video, the famous Chinese democracy movement leader
Wei Jingsheng and other pro-democracy activists delivered speeches to the
Chinese people through the VOA live broadcast.

The
following is Wei Jingsheng's second speech to both Chinese and Tibetan friends
at the end of the protest in front of the Chinese Consulate General in the
afternoon on June 4, 2012, as shown in the video in the above link.
Wei
Jingsheng: "I am pleased that we can be together. So many of our friends are together, in
memory of our brothers and sisters killed during the June 4 massacre. We are commemorating not only our
brothers and sisters who were killed in the Tiananmen Square massacre, but also
our brothers and sisters massacred in Lhasa that year of 1989. Why were they massacred in that
year? It was because they wanted
to create a new future for China.
They were not willing to be oppressed, exploited, and to be deceived. So the Communist Party sent tanks,
machine guns, and the army to massacre them. Now we commemorate these victims. As a matter of fact, we continue their undertaking and
continue their hard efforts. The
Chinese government always wants people not to resist. It hopes that shameless intellectuals will help to
propagandize for it, asking people not to resist, to cooperate with the
Communist regime, to let the Communist Party reform by itself. This tune has deceived many
people. But we still have so many
brothers and sisters persisting.
As long as we are persisting, ultimately, the final victory is
ours. Thank you all!"
Following
Mr. Wei was a speech by Ms. Chen Liqun.
She said that some people on Facebook said that there was no
massacre. "We could ask, was
there a massacre or not?"
People responded that "hundreds and thousands" were killed in
the square. She said: "We put
this imitation tank here to remind people not to forget. We must remember this massacre, and
never let this kind of thing happening again. We want to end one-party dictatorship and establish
democracy. Freedom belongs to the
people."
Then,
Chen Pokong recited a commemorative poem he wrote 23 years ago right after the
massacre. A young man Kong Lingxi
gave a speech. Then artist Chen
Weimin explained his are performance in action.
