Overseas
Chinese Democracy Groups Hold International Conference "Great Changes in
China" in Copenhagen, Denmark
-- by
Radio Free Asia, August 16, 2012
A
number of overseas pro-democracy groups will be holding an international
conference "Great Changes in China" in Copenhagen, Denmark, from
August 18 to 19. Wei Jingsheng and
Pan Qing, who came from the United States and Australia, and other overseas
democracy activists and scholars from various countries in Europe will be
participating this conference.
As
the overseas media focus on the possible development of Gu Kailai's trial and
Bo Xilai's case, as well as how the Chinese Communist Party will hold its 18th
Congress, this reporter has learned that a major conference "Great Changes
in China", is being held this weekend on the 18th and 19th in Copenhagen,
Denmark. This conference was
initiated by Wei Jingsheng, the famous dissident from modern China. The RFA reporter interviewed Mr. Wang
Guoxing of Netherlands, who is the chairman of the Chinese Democratic
Front. Wang is in charge of
preparing this conference.
Regarding the conference, Wang introduces: "This conference was
organized by the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and the Chinese
Democratic Front. The chair of the
Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition is Mr. Wei Jingsheng. I am the person in charge of its
preparation."
Regarding
the purpose and content of the conference, Mr. Wang Guoxing said: "The
purpose of our conference is due to a series of things happening in China this
year which affect all of us. First
was the case of Wang Lijun and Bo Xilai in Chongqing, then there was Chen
Guangcheng who broke out from confinement and fled China. More recently were the events related
to Li Wangyang, and the cases of Qidong and Shifang. From this series of events, we can see that a variety of
changes will happen in China during the power transfer of the Chinese Communist
Party."
Mr.
Wang Guoxing said: "These phenomena are showing that the authoritarian
China has been undergoing comprehensive and fundamental changes from the bottom
to top, from inside of China to overseas.
Currently, there are various human rights abuses in China, resulting in
continuous mass unrests. The harsh
realities of social conflict, ethnic conflict, ruler conflict, and
environmental catastrophe have become increasingly prominent. All of these events compose a systemic
crisis due to the one-party dictatorship, which has already become a major
obstacle for China in developing a sustainable future. Thus we wanted to call for this
conference to have some experts and scholars from the United States and Europe
come together to adjust and strengthen the democratic forces overseas so as to
contribute to a democratic future in China."
Regarding
who will attend the meeting, Mr. Wang Guoxing said, "We have invited a lot of people to come. Some who will be here are Mr. Wei
Jingsheng; Dilshat Rexit, the spokesman of the World Uighur Congress, Dr. Qian
Yuejun from Germany, Dr. Zhang Yu of Chinese Pen, and Mr. Pan Qing from far
away Australia. In Denmark, we
have the local leader of our Chinese Democratic Front, Dr. Liu Gang, and Mr.
Zhang Guoting, who has done a lot of Internet campaigns. We also have Mr. Liu Hao from
Sweden. They all have done a lot
of work to prepare for the conference."
The
above is a report by Tian Yi, a special correspondent of Radio Free Asia from
Germany.
