"The
Great Changes in China" 2012 International Conference Hold in the Danish
Capital, Copenhagen (the Epoch Times)
[Epoch
Times, August 19, 2012] (reported by the Epoch Times reporters Lin Da and Shu
Yi from Copenhagen, Denmark) On August 18, 2012, the Chinese Democratic Front
(CDF) and the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition (OCDC) jointly held an
international conference titled "The Great Changes in China" in the
Danish Capital, Copenhagen.
Attendees made special trips from far away including from the United
States, Australia, and Hong Kong.
Many democratic activists who care about China's future came from
various European countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and
Denmark.
Mr.
Wei Jingsheng, OCDC chair and famous democracy leader; Mr. Pan Qing, senior
democracy activist; Dr. Qian Yuejun, famous legal expert from Germany and chief
editor of "European Chinese Herald"; Dr. Wang Cheng, National
Committee of Chinese Democratic Party; Dilshat Rexit, the spokesman of the
World Uighur Congress and East Turkestan (Xinjiang) from Sweden; Dr. Liu Gang,
CDF chair in Denmark, etc. spoke at the conference. Participants spoke their minds on various related issues, with
enthusiastic discussion in a lively atmosphere.
The
background for convening this conference was, as written by the organizers in
their announcement: "The harsh realities of social conflict, ethnic
conflict, ruler conflict, and environmental catastrophe have become
increasingly prominent in China.
The varied chaos of the internal power struggle within the Communist
leadership before its 18th Congress illustrates that the rule of the Communist
one-party dictatorship is about to collapse. The systemic crisis due to the one-party dictatorship has
already become a major bottleneck for China in developing a sustainable
future."
Thus,
the focus of discussions became questions such as: How is China to maintain
social stability under the premise of a free development of the people? How is China to embark a feasible path
to change from an autocracy into a constitutional democracy? How can we bring together the international
forces to support the cause of democracy in China, as well as to participate in
and to promote a great change?
Residing
in the Netherlands, Mr. Wang Guoxing, the CDF chair and the OCDC Deputy
Secretary-General, was the organizer and also one of initiators for this
conference. Regarding the purpose
for holding this conference, he told this reporter: "In this year of 2012,
increasing sentiments raging with the Chinese people include events such as the
cases of Bo Xilai and Gu Kailai, and of Wang Lijun. Meanwhile, there are dramatic changes in the upper levels of
the Communist leadership as well.
We realize that an era of great change for China has started. We have the responsibility to invite
all these experts from overseas together, to discuss a way for movement toward
Chinese democracy. Within this
movement there are various issues related to law, human rights, and ethnic
groups that we hope to discuss fully in this conference. Now, in the hearts of the Chinese
people, they have already rejected and abandoned the Communist regime. In this process of mind change, there
is a lot of thought and anxiety.
During this period, as a political organization, we should
enthusiastically take the responsibility to guide the public and to generate
new ideas.
Mr.
Wei Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, said:
"For a country and a society to be maintained, the law is very
important. However, the most
important thing related to the law is whether the people believe in the
sincerity of law. In the several
cases people are concerned about, such as Bo Xilai, Gu Kailai, and even
including Zhou Kehua who was supposedly shot to death recently, people just do
not believe the Chinese government.
The true issue revealed through these cases is that, regardless whatever
the Chinese government claims, with or without evidence, the Chinese people
just do not believe it. When the
people do not believe the government, then it is hard to maintain from
within. The Communist Party has
already entered chaos. Before, it
was only we who talked about China's need for democracy and freedom, etc. But now all the Chinese people are
echoing this need and thinking about it.
Even within the Communist leadership, there are many people who think
that without political reform, if the people' will is not followed, then the
regime will not be able to be maintained.
People would revolt; even many people within the Communist Party would
revolt. When the fundamental base
for maintaining the country is gone, most importantly when the people do not
believe the Communist regime, where could the regime get its authority? A government without authority is
indeed difficult to maintain."
Mr.
Wei went on to say: "So how can we encourage the international community
to assist the Chinese people to rebel?
We need to start thinking of these issues now and start to work on
them. Time is very urgent and we
have to prepare for a great change in China."
Although
the conference went on for a whole day, there were still a lot of participants
who held strong concerns and a responsibility to China that did not want to
leave. They continued a lively and
active discussion.
The
second day of the conference, on August 19, included the Tenth Congress of the
Chinese Democratic Front and the European working meeting of the Overseas
Chinese Democracy Coalition, held at the same time.
For
more details about these meetings, please stay tuned for the follow-up reports.
