The
Wei Jingsheng Foundation Announces the Ninth Annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese
Democracy Champion Prize" Award
December
5, 2012
Since
2004, the Wei Jingsheng Foundation has awarded the "Wei Jingsheng Chinese
Democracy Champion Prize" every year on December 5th. In the last eight years the awarding of
this prize has had reverberations around the world. Those people persisting in the fight in China, who are at
any moment in life-threatening danger, have thus been encouraged and consoled.
As
can be expected, those who nominate a candidate believe the person they have
nominated has made a great contribution to the cause of Chinese Democracy. Nominating someone in and of itself is
a way to commend all champions of democracy, including those unknown, untiring
democracy heroes who do not concern themselves with fame and fortune. We have great respect for their
strength of spirit and the sacrifices they have made. As in the past 8 years, this year's award gives greatest
consideration to those individuals and groups who have persisted in their work
on the domestic democracy movement inside China, especially these who gave up
their own freedom and even their lives.
Today's
China faces its turning point.
Political reform has been the desire of the people and the trend of the
times. However, many people's
effort and sacrifice contributed to the hope of the people who are alive. Many people who sacrificed naturally
wanted to see their own achievements, yet died prematurely. They should not be forgotten and will
not be forgotten.
The
recipient for this year's "Wei Jingsheng Democracy Champion Prize"
announced by the Foundation's Wei Jingsheng Democracy Champion Prize Judging
Committee is exactly such a person.
He is Mr. Wang Donghai, the leader who tried to break the ban of the
Chinese Communist Party on organizing an opposition party, and the first person
who publicly tried to register an opposition party in China that is now under
the one-party rule of the Communist Party.
Wang
Donghai of Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province, was born on November 3, 1946,
and passed away on April 28, 2012.
He was a famous dissident, and a co-founder of the Chinese Democracy
Party. In 1979, Wang Donghai
participated in the Democracy Wall movement of Hangzhou, and was very active in
the pro-democracy movement in Zhejiang province. After the Communist authorities banned public protest
against the June 4 massacre in 1989, Wang Donghai, then a store manager,
organized and participated in a series demonstration activities in Hangzhou in
solidarity with the students. He
led his clerks and colleagues on the streets to protest, while holding banners
such as "Do not kill the students, shoot at me!" Therefore, he was sentenced to two
years on charges of "counterrevolutionary incitement and
propaganda". Afterwards, he
led signature campaigns and appeals that resulted in another year of
persecution in the name of "reeducation through labor" by the
Hangzhou Public Security Bureau.
On June 25, 1998, Wang Donghai along with Wang Youcai and Lin Hui, on
behalf of the Preparatory Committee, went to the Zhejiang Provincial Department
of Civil Affairs to apply for registration to establish the Zhejiang Committee
of the Chinese Democratic Party.
This application was the first effort to publicly organize an opposition
party under the Communist regime since 1949.
For
more details about this democracy champion Wang Donghai, please read the prize
dedication by Ms. Huang Ciping: "You Died before Winning the Battle, Which
Made all the Heroes Cry."
This
year's prize to Mr. Wang Donghai is also recognition of the dozens of members
of the Zhejiang Committee of the Chinese Democratic Party who have been in unity
for more than one decade in adhering to the opposition movement in China. Despite being in a land of plenty and
prosperity, in a coastal region of China with better economic conditions, these
people are willing to sacrifice their comfortable life to promote freedom and
democracy just as Wang Donghai did.
Zhejiang Province is one of the regions in China that have the most
persecution and imprisonment against the dissidents, as well as a region where
these dissidents have the most democratic consciousness, morale, and quality.
But
other dissidents throughout China are just as remarkable. They experienced torture suffering, yet
continue working toward a noble and beautiful goal one after another. What comforts us is that because of the
effort of these many people just like Wang Donghai, we are getting closer and
closer to our goal. We will carry
on the behest of Wang Donghai and accomplish what he strived for. Rest in peace, Mr. Wang!
This
year's award money donated by individuals totaled $7,000. Those who donated money are donating
their passion and belief in Chinese democracy. For this passion we want to express our deepest
gratitude. In addition we also
want to express our appreciation to all those people who recommended nominees
for our ninth annual "Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion
Prize," include the nominators who are the laureates of "Wei
Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" from previous years. We thank all of you for your support
and encouragement.
