"You
Died before Winning the Battle, Which Made all the Heroes Cry"
--
Prize Dedication to Wang Donghai as Recipient of the Ninth Annual "Wei
Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" by the Wei Jingsheng
Foundation
December
5, 2012
"You
Died before Winning the Battle, Which Made all the Heroes Cry." This poem was written by the well-known
Chinese poet Du Fu in 760 AD when he visited the memorial hall of Zhuge Liang,
the most well known Chinese strategist and inventor. Zhuge Liang, with a great reputation of loyalty, justice,
intelligence, and courage in Chinese history, died in the summer of 234 AD at
the age of 53 from exhaustion and illness during a military battle. Yet to see what he wanted to achieve,
his death forever changed Chinese history.
When
Du Fu wrote this poem "Prime Minister of Sichuan", he was not just
talking about Zhuge Liang, he was also talking about himself and many people
like him. At the time of Du Fu's
visit, he was unable to fulfill his own political ambitions and suffered in
poverty. Meanwhile, the Tang
Dynasty was in the shadow of war, people were dying and suffering, society was
in destruction and chaos.
Zhuge
Liang's sorrow and Du Fu's poem influenced and moved many generations of people
afterwards. Thirty-five years
later in 805 AD, Wang Shuwen, then a leader who advocated political reform, was
wrongfully accused by the conservative officials and thus failed his reform
plan. According to historic
accounts, Wang recited these two sentences with tears falling. In 1128 AD at the end of the Bei Song
Dynasty, the 70 year old patriotic general Zong Ze led the army to defend their
capital city KaiFeng. His concern
of the country led to his own illness that ultimately took his life. These two sentences from the poem were
the last sentences he spoke.
Today,
I am reciting these two sentences in tears in dedication and memory of one
special hero of our generation, Mr. Wang Donghai, who passed away suddenly on
April 28 this year. This year's
"Wei Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize" is awarded to Wang
Donghai for his being a leader of the Zhejiang Committee of the Chinese
Democracy Party. The prize is also
in recognition of all the members of the Zhejiang Committee of the Chinese
Democracy Party -- the first opposition group inside China that tried to openly
register despite the ban on organizing opposition parties decreed by the
one-party dictator regime of the Chinese Communist Party. For more than one decade now this group
of several dozen people has been insisting on its political ideal and practice
for democracy and human rights despite suppression and persecution. Since the inception of the "Wei
Jingsheng Chinese Democracy Champion Prize", members of this group and
even the group itself have been nominated several times by more than one
hundred people.
As
a leader of the Zhejiang democratic activists, Wang Donghai has been a
well-known dissident inside China.
Since 1970's, he has continued to strive for democracy and human
rights. The art of his leadership
is revealed best in his way of responsibility and courage. His ability to attract people of all
the ages and different backgrounds to get together was outstanding. Giving up a comfortable life as a
shopping mall manager to take up his protest of the June 4 Massacre in 1989,
which subsequently led to a two-year sentence on charges of
"counterrevolutionary incitement and propaganda", Wang's small and
humble home in Hangzhou became a magnet for activists to gather. He always told fellow activists to put
the blame on him whenever necessary in the hope of distracting the attention of
the Communist regime and to preserve the energy and resources needed for the
democracy movement.
When
the students were massacred by the Chinese government troops in Beijing in
1989, Wang led a group of people demonstrating in Hangzhou with a banner:
"Do not kill the students, shoot at me!" After he served his two years sentence and was released in
the early 1990's, risking his own freedom and safety, Wang Donghai continuously
led many appeals and petitions nationwide calling for the release of the other political
prisoners including Wei Jingsheng.
Wang Donghai even made a trip to Beijing to visit Wei Jingsheng during
Wei's half year of release time in the 1990's to exchange ideas and to
collaborate in the democracy effort.
On
the 7th anniversary of the June 4 Massacre in 1995, Wang Donghai drafted a
joint statement, a "Call for the immediate release of Wei Jingsheng, Wang
Dan, Liu Nianchun and all political prisoners," which was signed by
many. The statement had five
proposals, including
1)
The unconditional release of Wei Jingsheng, Chen Ziming, Wang Dan, Liu
Nianchun, Zhang Lin, Hu Shigen, Xu Yonghai and all the political and religious
prisoners;
2)
The re-evaluation of the June 4th Massacre and the 1989 pro-democracy movement;
3)
The convening of a democracy roundtable;
4)
The initiation of extensive community dialogue within the society; and
5)
The starting of progressive political reform step by step in an orderly manner.
As
a result, Mr. Wang Donghai was sentenced to re-education through labor for a
year
by Hangzhou Public Security Bureau.
Of
course, this was a group effort of many, especially those activists from
Zhejiang. Here I want to quote
what was written in the nomination letter about this group.
"They
are the backbone of the Chinese.
They are not satisfied with the material life, and they want every
Chinese to be able to live with dignity.
Thus, they braved the biggest danger in 1998 by initiating a precedent
in the nation to organize an opposition party. Further, after the suppression, they continued working
together to uphold the human rights movement. For many years now, they have been actively involved in the
activities of democracy and human rights, in different forms and ways. They set a good example for the Chinese
public, and pointed out the future of China to the Chinese people. Especially in the last few years, in
the concrete building of democratic politics, they have actively called for the
release of political prisoners, promoted the building of society based on the
rule of law, and participated in the rights defending movement of the workers
and peasants. These several dozen
Democrats in Zhejiang have been openly participating in democratic political
activities for a long time.
Zhejiang is one of the provinces that have the most people participating
the democracy movement in the county, and thus also has suffered more
persecution.
It
is sad to report that in recent years, several of their members encountered
more prosecution and even death.
These pioneers include Mr. Li Hong who passed away while serving his
sentence and Mr. Zhu Yufu who was just sentenced to another 7 years in February
this year. There are others who
have been in and out of jail due to their beliefs and actions in promoting
democracy and human rights, such as Mr. Chen Shuqing, Mr. Zhu Zhengming, Mr.
Wang Rongqing, etc.
In
his condolence to Wang Donghai's death, Wei Jingsheng said: "Wang
Donghai's sacrifice was huge, and his contribution was enormous, though often
unknown. As we remember Wang
Donghai now, I especially want to thank him for leading the call for release in
1995 when I and other pro-democracy activists went to prison, and thus suffered
the revenge from the authority which include one year of labor camp. He used his own freedom to fight for
the freedom of others. This spirit
of caring for the others is particularly valuable. His belief in democracy and freedom will surely become the
clarion of the Chinese democracy movement in the future. His passing is a great loss to the
movement, but it should also be an inspiration to all of us. Although the road to democracy in China
is difficult and tortuous, nevertheless the outlook is for sure bright."
Wang
Donghai was an optimistic person and had been looking forward to see a
democratic China in the near future.
Unfortunately, "he died before winning the battle, which made all
the heroes cry." This sad
fact could only stimulate even more our determination and dedication to Chinese
democracy and freedom. As I
realize that we are getting closer and closer to our goal, I also have learned
directly the threat of the danger, even death. Well, we all have a limited life, but we could make the
meaning of life unlimited.
Our
lives could be cut short. But all
us democracy fighters should not regret for what we are doing and
perusing. We should be proud of
that. I think that is also what
Wang Donghai thought in evaluating his own life.
May
Wang Donghai rest in peace. What
you had not accomplished, will be achieved.

1) 无条件释放魏京生、陈子明、王丹、刘念春、张林、胡石根、徐永海等一切在押的政治犯和宗教犯;
2) 重新评价六四和八九民运;
3) 召开圆桌会议;
4) 广泛开展与社会各界的对话;
