Various
Locations in the USA Hold Events in Memory of June 4 Massacre; Several Hundred
People Protested in Front of the Chinese Consulate in New York
--
prime news from Radio Free Asia homepage, June 5, 2013
In
observing the 24th anniversary of the June 4 Massacre in Beijing, Chinese
democracy activists Wei Jingsheng, Wuer Kaixi, Wang Juntao, and several
hundreds of protesters went to the Chinese Consulate in New York to protest and
to mourn the dead. They also
expect China to move towards genuine democracy and freedom.
The
24th anniversary of June 4 memorial activity was jointly organized by the
Chinese Democratic Party, the Chinese Alliance for Democracy, Democratic China,
the Chinese Liberal Democratic Party and other pro-democracy organizations in
the greater New York area. Under
the scorching sun, several hundred people dressed in white or black T-shirts to
protest in front of the Chinese consulate in New York.
The
protesters chanted "Freedom, China," "Democracy, China"
slogans, demanding vindication of the June 4 ruling, promoting reform, and
advocating democracy.
Specially
arriving from Taiwan, Wuer Kaixi expressed in an interview that the democracy
activists do not take the vindication of the June 4 ruling by the Communist
Party as a final goal, nor expect the new Chinese government to be more
open-minded, but hope the Chinese government can undertake institutional
reforms.
Wuer
Kaixi said that the June 4 Tiananmen Massacre is the most distinctive
historical event for the whole China; even the whole world knows about the
anti-democratic Chinese Communist Party.
From this perspective, one could see that vindication of the June 4
ruling is important, because it will be the first step in promoting democracy
in China. Democracy in China is
the main reason that for 24 years now, Chinese people around the world are continuing
their memorial of the June 4th Massacre.
Wei
Jingsheng urged the U.S. government, that as a global leader for democracy and
freedom, President Obama should also express concern for the pursuit of
democracy and human rights when he is meeting Xi Jinping face to face.
