Protesters Demand Jack Ma of Alibaba to Apologize for his Praise of the Bloody Crackdown of the June 4 Massacre in Beijing in 1989

2013-07-22

Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba Group in China, praised Deng Xiaoping's order of the June 4 crackdown (in 1989) as "the best decision."  His remarks triggered strong reaction.  Last weekend, a group of overseas Chinese democracy activists went to the Alibaba Group US office and requested Jack Ma to make a public apology for his remarks.  Ma issued a written statement the same day, claiming a "South China Morning Post" report made people misunderstand his words.

Zhou Fengsuo, Fang Zheng, Huang CiPing, Ren Songlin, and their supporters went to the Alibaba Group US office in Santa Clara of the San Francisco Bay area last weekend, to deliver a protest letter signed by about one thousand people.  The protest letter asked Jack Ma to make public apology in regard to his praise of Deng Xiaoping's giving the order of the crackdown on June 4, 1989.

When Jack Ma was interviewed by Hong Kong's "South China Morning Post", he claimed that Deng Xiaoping's June 4 crackdown "was not the perfect decision, but it was the best decision."

Alibaba's vice president for International Corporate Affairs, John Spelich, talked to the four representatives of the protesters at the Alibaba Group US office.  A written statement from Jack Ma was also delivered to these protesters, which claimed that the "South China Morning Post" report resulted people's misunderstanding of his words.

Zhou Fengsuo, a student leader of the 1989 pro-democracy movement in Tiananmen Square told the reporters after the meeting: "John Spelich claimed that Jack Ma himself thinks that he did not say this.  We asked Jack Ma to come forward to give an explanation and an apology.  Meanwhile, we requested the Alibaba Group to clarify that Jack Ma said so not because of economic benefit."

The same day, online news reported that the reporter who interviewed Jack Ma stated that her edited report made people misunderstand Ma, and therefore she resigned.  However, on the same day, the "South China Morning Post" made a statement that the published article is in line with the recording and thus it believes the authenticity of the report.

In this regard, Zhou Fengsuo said: "We are very sympathetic to the reporter, who was forced to resign.  This illustrates that the Alibaba group certainly put tremendous pressure over her, which is a very dangerous interference to freedom of the press."

Fang Zheng, the former Beijing student whose legs were crushed when the PLA tanks rolled over them, told the reporter: "I did not expect that Jack Ma, as a very successful entrepreneur in China, would defend the crimes of the June 4 crackdown and praise Deng Xiaoping.  As a witness and a direct victim, I hope Jack Ma makes a public apology.  We came over here in the hope of getting a positive response from him.  But Jack Ma responded through this vice president of his company, without letting us know what he wants to express.  It seems that he wants to push the responsibility over to the reporter or the newspaper. "

Huang Ciping is the Secretary-General of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition and Executive Director of the Wei Jingsheng Foundation from the East Coast.  She asked Ma and Alibaba: "So many people were slaughtered during the June 4 Massacre, yet you claim it as a political issue.  I want to ask you, is it really is just a political issue as you said, or an essential issue of humanity, morality and conscience?  I think you should take a stand on this.  Further, I say that if Jack Ma really wants to clarify this issue, he has ample opportunity. "

The protesters said that the Alibaba company's willingness to be in touch with them and their acceptance of the letter of protest is a positive attitude.  Currently they are waiting for Ma himself to respond to their protests.

From San Francisco, this is a report by the special correspondent CK of Radio Free Asia.
