Wei
Jingsheng and Huang Ciping's Letter to the Kepler Science Conference II,
Calling Scientists for Their Conscience to Support Human Rights
To
the Kepler Science Conference II, November 4-8, 2013
Hosted
by the NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, CA
--
WEI Jingsheng & HUANG Ciping
October 30, 2013
Participants
of the Kepler Science Conference II:
1)
We have learned there was some misunderstanding during the organizing of your
conference. As people who have
known Representative Wolf and his stand on China for years and also know a lot
of details about the NASA/China issue, we want to assure you that the article
by the Guardian on October 4 had a lot of wrong information in it, to which
Rep. Wolf has already clarified.
We want to let you know that Rep. Wolf is one of the people who care the
most about the Chinese people and the Chinese human rights situation, although
this stance is in direct conflict with Chinese Communist regime, include its
army PLA.
2)
Although your conference is about science, we want to remind you that science
is used for the benefit of mankind, and it can also destroy humanity. If back in World War II the USA had
opened all its science and technology, including nuclear technology to
everyone, thus letting Nazi Germany gain access to the atomic bomb, what kind
of world would we live in now?
3)
As do all the participating scientists at your conference, we support freedom
of speech and like to think of science without borders. Yet, the Chinese Communist regime is
the same kind of tyranny as the Nazi Germany back then. We suspect that you will not want to
use your scientific knowledge to help a tyranny, to oppress its people and
threaten human security. This is
the spirit of Rep. Wolf's effort, as well as that of the majority of Chinese
people who suffer under the Communist dictatorship.
4)
We also want to remind you of the several incidents where visiting Chinese
scientists have taken advantage of their host's graciousness to steal US
secrets and feed sensitive material back to the Chinese government. Again, it is this history that Rep.
Wolf comes from. What he was doing
is the human security and world peace.
That is what we all want, hopefully include you as well.
5)
We have noticed that in the past the Western scientific community has been very
concerned about human rights. The
Western scientists were serving as a model of the human conscience. Yet nowadays, we rarely see scientists
outraged and speaking out against the tyranny of the Communist regime. Is this the pride of scientists, or a
shame?
6)
We wish the participating scientists at your conference would resume your good
tradition, to show your stand with the Chinese people, instead of an autocratic
regime. In particular, we wish the
participants at this conference will call for the release of political
prisoners in China and to announce your refuse to cooperate with a tyranny that
suppresses the human conscience.
If you do so, all the suppressed people will be thankful to you.
We
hope your conference will resume the good tradition the scientists to support
the dissidents and to call for the release of prisoners of conscience, though
making a resolution of this regard or simply present our letter to the
participants for their knowledge and call for their conscience.
Please
feel free if you want to communicate with us of your opinions, comments, or any
cooperation in this regard.
