Please Join Us to Celebrate 25 Years of the Sakharov Prize by the European
Parliament with Featured Prize Laureates in the US Congress
Dear
friends,
We
invite you to join us to celebrate 25 years of the Sakharov Freedom of Thought
Prize with featured prize laureates in the US Congress on Tuesday, January 14,
2014. The prize was founded by the
European Parliament in 1988 to honor individuals and organizations for their
efforts on behalf of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Malala Yousafzai, a young Pakistani
activist, was the recipient of the latest award in 2013.
The
time: January 14, 2014, from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. (Refreshments served 5.00 - 6.00
p.m.)
The
place: Cannon Caucus Room, Cannon House Office Building
The
event will feature presentations from several former Sakharov Prize Laureates
discussing their own unique experiences in relation to the prize, and ways in
which the broader human rights community in the U.S. and Europe can collaborate
to support human rights defenders wherever they may be. Speakers include the laureates
Hauwa Ibrahim (Nigeria),
Wei Jingsheng (China),
Rosa Maria Payá (daughter of Oswaldo José
Payá Sardinas, Cuba),
Jim Hoagland (Contributing Editor of The
Washington Post, representing Reporters Without Borders).
It
will be moderated by Daniel Calingaert, Executive Vice President of Freedom
House.
This
event is organized by the European Parliament Liaison Office, in conjunction
with the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the US Congress, and
co-sponsored by the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, Freedom House, Reporters Without
Boarders, and Cuba Democracy Advocates.
