Xinjiang Issues (part 1):

The Different Concepts of the Uyghurs, Xinjiang Independence, and the Terrorists

The Uyghurs, the Xinjiang Independence movement, and the terrorists are three completely different concepts, but often confused by some others.  The recent terrorist attacks in Kunming accounted for almost half of the news and online media in China.  More than 90% of the content does not make a clear distinction between these 3 concepts and their relationships, and has resulted in extremely dangerous guidance in the public opinion in China.  Most genocides in history were accomplished under the guidance of this type of biased opinion.

 

The Uyghurs are an ethnic group, just like us the Han Chinese.  They work diligently, and hope to live a rich and happy family life.  Why would they want to hate the Han ethnic group?  That does not make sense.  Some Han Chinese are not used to the Uyghurs' lifestyle, cultural values??, and even body odor from eating lamb, and even make jokes about them.  There are some well-known comedies turning the differences in life style, such as the lamb kebabs and accent, into jokes.  Indeed, we are not the same people from the same mold.

 

Further, not only are there different ethnic groups, there are even people in different provinces and different regions, and people with different personalities.  There are not ever the same water droplets in this world, not to mention the same people.  Regardless whatever kind of people we are, if we want to live together in harmony we must learn to tolerate each other.  The higher realm is to find the good things in others, which would not only make it possible to live together in harmony, but also be of great benefit to ourselves.

 

I admire the old generation of people in Beijing.  As an ancient city, Beijing was inhabited by different races from around the world.  People in Beijing had not only learned to tolerate different customs and cultures, but also were particularly good at finding the advantages of others.  Even if they were not able to learn themselves, at least they understood and respected the differences.  While I was a worker, there were old masters who would ask me: the old Lamas in Yonghe Harmony Palace make a unique butter tea; can you make an inquiry to learn how to make it, so we can occasionally enjoy a pot or so?  I made the inquiry and learned it was not easy, so I gave up.

 

There were all sorts of people who came from all the different parts of China, or even different parts of the world in Beijing.  They learned a culture to be in harmony with people who were different from themselves.  It was like the culture in the United States now, able to be tolerant, yet to learn to appreciate the advantages of different cultures.  So from where did we get these modern ethnic conflicts?

 

Let us start from a real example.  While I was detained in Qinghai prison, I noticed a strange phenomenon.  The Communist cadres there almost unanimously discriminated against the ethnic minorities, to the degree of ridiculousness.  As an example, they considered anything related to the Tibetans as inferior.  The Tibetan mastiff that now is way too popular in China was considered inferior, to the degree that they would only be recognized if the breed was mated with the other breeds from China.  The most ridiculous was that they did not consider the yak butter as butter enjoyed by the Westerners: "How could the Tibetans have that kind of high class food?"  So when I told them that the butter from yaks is actually better than the average butter, they almost laughed their bellies broken: "Finally we found a chance to refute Wei Jingsheng!"

 

Only after they dined in a Western restaurant in Xining according to my suggestion, did they admit indeed both butters are similar.

 

I had been very surprised to realize this kind of discriminatory ideology from the ordinary people in China.  Where is it from?  Slowly, I found out that it started from the time when the Communist military and police entered these regions.  The Communist regime would feed them indoctrination of "pioneer thoughts" learned from the former Soviet Union, which was to treat all the peoples of Siberia and the Far East as barbarians, including Chinese and Koreans who lived in the very Far East.  In their ideology, these people are not human, thus resulting in the saying of "pioneering the unmanned regions".

 

This feeding of ideological indoctrination of ethnic discrimination got passed from generation to generation, and also spread to new immigrants.  It is impossible for others not realize this discrimination against minorities by the Han Chinese who occupied upper levels of the society.  Thus, the ethnic estrangement developed into ethnic conflict, and gradually evolved into hatred.  Regardless of some preferential policies for ethnic minorities, they did not offset the reality of discrimination and lack of self-respect.  Maybe many people still have a strong or weak servile attitude, but there are still a large number of people who refuse to accept the suppression.  Just like us the Han Chinese, they also organize into secret groups of resistance.  This history is the source for the groups seeking the Xinjiang independence.

 

More than a decade ago, there were groups supporting Xinjiang independence that successfully held a World Uyghurs Conference.  Although the views of these groups differed, they still adopted some resolutions.  One of the resolutions was not to harm innocent people and stay away from terrorism.  Another was to unite with all the ethnic groups in Xinjiang, to struggle for independence, and refuse reverse racism.  These two resolutions immediately received praise from the Han Chinese overseas.  The Xinjiang Independence Movement gained more sympathy and support, including from the Han Chinese in Xinjiang.

 

Unfortunately, these good policies were broken later on.  Some people who received training and support from the Taliban and Arab petro group, departed further and further.  Not only were they brainwashed by terrorism, but also they accepted the training for terrorism.  They returned to Xinjiang to develop organizations and to carry out the so-called Jihad.  In the past I have not quite understand what the use of terrorism was.  I always thought it is a tactic of a coward: to stab and snipe from a hiding spot because of a lack of courage to fight face to face.

 

I was shocked when one of the leaders of the Xinjiang Independence movement asked me in private if terrorism had a use or not.  It turned out that they held the hope in the way of the Palestinian terrorists who were trying to scare the local Jewish people.  They thought maybe the terrorism could scare away the local Han Chinese to make them a majority, and then they could gain independence through enough votes.  This is indeed a terrible idea and a very stupid one.  Only a nut would produce such an idea.

 

We the Han Chinese should not continue stay on the ethnic discrimination ship of the Communist regime and should not be an accomplice to evil.  We need to make a clear distinction between the ordinary Uyghur people and the terrorists, and should not put the Uyghur label over any problem encountered.  If we do not distinguish between right and wrong, sooner or later, the regime will force people to rebel, thus producing ethnic bloodshed.

新疆问题(之一):维吾尔族、疆独、恐怖分子

维吾尔族、疆独和恐怖分子这三个是完全不同的概念,却常常被混淆不清。刚刚发生的昆明恐怖袭击,几乎占据了新闻和网络媒体的半边天。其中百分之九十以上分不清这三者的关系,对老百姓的舆论给予了极其危险的引导。历史上的多数种族灭绝事件,都是在这种偏颇的舆论引导下完成的。

 

维吾尔族是一个民族,它的人民和我们汉族老百姓一样,勤勤恳恳地劳作,希望和家人能过上富裕和快乐的生活。他们为什么要仇视汉族人民呢?没有道理。至于说生活习惯、文化观念,甚至浑身羊肉味儿可能让周围的人看不惯。但这有时还成为生活中的笑料,著名的相声小品中就有不少拿烤羊肉串儿,和咕噜咕噜的新疆口音做笑料的。要是大家都是一个模子立刻出来的,也就笑不起来,生活变得索然无味了。

 

再者说,不但是不同民族,就是不同省份、不同地区甚至不同的性格之间,也会有很多不同之处。甚至世界上都没有两滴完全相同的水滴,何况是人呢。不管是什么人在一起要和睦相处,就要学会容忍。更高的境界是寻找别人的优点。能在不同的人之间取长补短,就不但能和睦相处,而且对自己还大大地有益。

 

我很佩服老北京人。北京自古以来就是个全世界各色人种聚居的城市,这里的人不但学会了容忍不同风俗和不同文化,还特别善于发现别人的长处。即使自己学不来,至少也加以理解,加以尊重。我当工人的时候,就有老师傅来和我说;人家雍和宫老喇嘛打的酥油茶确实味道独特,你能不能给探听一下怎么打的,咱们以后也可以时不时来一壶。我一打听还真不简单,于是作罢。

 

北京人本身就来自五湖四海,甚至世界各地。他们学会了和各种不同于自己的人之间和睦相处的文化。和现在的美国文化一样,可以容忍并且学着欣赏不同文化的优点。那么现代的民族矛盾又是从什么地方开始的呢?

 

再从实际的例证开始。我被关押在青海监狱的时候,发现过一个奇怪的现象。那儿的干部几乎一致地歧视少数民族,而且到了可笑的地步,凡是和老藏民相关的事和物,都被认为是低级的。现在流行得出了圈的藏獒,被他们认为是低级的,一定要和内地带来的柴狗交配后的混血狗才被承认。最可笑的是坚决不承认老藏民的酥油就是西餐吃的黄油,“老藏民怎么会有那么高级的东西”。我告诉他们牦牛产的酥油实际上比一般的黄油更高级,几乎笑破了他们的肚皮,“可找到一次驳倒老魏的机会了”。

 

等到他们按我的指点在西宁的西餐馆吃过一顿饭之后,才承认那确实差不多。

 

我一直很奇怪,都是普通老百姓,他们这种歧视性的意识形态是从哪儿来的呢?慢慢地我发现,从这些军队和警察进入少数民族地区开始,共产党就给他们灌输从苏联那儿学来的开拓思想:也就是把西伯利亚和远东的各族人民都当作是野蛮人,包括生活在远东一带的中国人和朝鲜人。在他们的意识形态里,这些人都不是人,所以才有“开拓无人区”的说法。

 

这种民族歧视的思想灌输,一代传给一代,而且也传染给新来的移民。在当地占据上层地位的汉族对少数民族的歧视,别人不可能看不出来。于是就从民族隔阂发展成为矛盾,又从民族矛盾逐渐酝酿成为仇恨。你就是有再多的少数民族优惠政策,也抵消不了受歧视没有自尊的现实。也许大多数人都有或强或弱的奴性,但还是会有一大批压不服的人。和咱们汉族人一样秘密组织反抗团体。这就是疆独团体的来源。

 

各疆独团体在十几年前就成功召开了世界维吾尔大会。虽然各团体的观点争议很大,但还是通过了一些决议。一条就是不得伤害无辜的老百姓,远离恐怖主义;另一条就是要和新疆的各族人民一起争取独立,不搞逆反的种族主义。这两条立刻在海外汉族人里获得了好评,新疆独立的事业获得了越来越多的同情和支持,其中包括在新疆的汉族人。

 

曾几何时这个好的政策被打破了。被塔利班和阿拉伯石油国培训和资助的一批人越走越远。他们受到了恐怖主义的洗脑,同时接受了恐怖主义的训练。他们回到新疆各地发展组织,开展所谓的圣战。过去我一直不太理解恐怖主义有什么用,我一直认为这是一种懦夫战术:不敢和人正面拼杀,就躲在暗处放冷枪;捅刀子。

 

直到一位疆独的领导人私下里向我询问这种政策有没有用,我才被吓了一大跳。原来他们和巴勒斯坦的恐怖分子一样,希望用恐怖行动吓坏赶走当地的犹太人和汉族人,直到他们占多数了,依靠选举就可以获得独立。这的确是非常恐怖的想法;也的确是非常愚蠢的想法。只有疯子的脑袋才会产生的想法。

 

我们汉族人不要继续上共产党的民族歧视的贼船,不要助纣为虐。我们要分清楚普通的维族老百姓和恐怖分子的区别,不要什么问题都挂上维族人的标签。如果不分清是非,迟早会官逼民反,真的制造出民族流血冲突。
