Huang
Ciping Delivers Wei Jingsheng's Message at the 20th Annual Commemoration of the
Vietnam Human Rights Day
On
May 9, 2014, Friday, the Vietnamese community in the USA celebrated the 20th
annual commemoration of the Vietnam Human Rights Day. Various human rights and freedom organizations joined the
celebration held in the US Senate during the day and later a dinner banquet in
the evening. Ms. Ciping Huang,
Secretary-General of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, was invited to
attend the event and delivered a speech on behalf of Wei Jingsheng. She was honored and also enjoyed the
dinner and entertainment with more than 200 friends. Below is the speech she delivered, on behalf of Wei Jingsheng,
the chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition.
__ __ __
Dear
friends and guests,
Every
year, we celebrate the Vietnam Human Rights Day. But this year it is not quite the same as before, because
there is some conflict in the South China Sea between China and Vietnam. Thus some people in both countries have
started to burn with righteous indignation. They took to heart the incited nationalism, and even began
to hate the people of the other country.
I
have to say: this is completely wrong.
Why
do these two authoritarian communist regimes want to incite nationalist
upsurges? Do the Vietnamese and
Chinese Communist regimes only care about that relatively insignificant
interest? Even a fool knows that
there is more harm than good when a war truly brakes out between the two
countries. Yet these communist
regimes are so determined, so enthusiastically inciting fanaticism. Obviously there must be some great deal
of interest to be worth it.
This
interest is to maintain their crumbling dictatorships in their own
countries. As their despotic ideology
can no longer continue its deceiving of the people, nationalism is the straw
these regimes could draw on to save their lives as dictators, as a way to
attract the support of the people.
Further, the general public is indeed very easily addicted to the opium
poison of nationalism, thus it became a tool of the dictatorships.
Therefore,
I hope that the dissidents in the opposition camp who are pursuing democracy
and freedom do not follow this tide of nationalism and do not support the
political conspiracy of their own dictatorial governments. Those people in the opposition who
pursue democracy and freedom must play the role of the opposition -- to expose
and to crush the conspiracy of authoritarian regimes.
We must
break down the barriers of nationalism.
We must unite together for the ideals of democracy and freedom. Only when we unite together and remain
against dictatorship forever, will the people in our countries get rid of the
disaster of the communist dictatorship.
The values of democracy and freedom are much higher than the value of
several small islands and the drums of petroleum oil.
