IFCSS
Commemorates the 25th Anniversary of June 4 Massacre
--
Yan Qing and Jin Dao, Voice of America
June
2, 2014
WASHINGTON
-- In two days, it will be the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square
incident, which was the culmination of the Chinese students and ordinary people
striving for democracy and freedom in 1989. Recently, around the world, there have been commemorations
organized for the 25 anniversary of the June 4 Massacre. One of them was the commemoration held
in front of the Chinese Embassy by the IFCSS (the Independent Federation of
Chinese Students and Scholars, USA).
For
25 years, every year the IFCSS united with other "dissidents" to
commemorate June 4, as well as the aspirations of the Chinese people this day
represents. They held
commemorations in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington and the Victims of
Communism Memorial. The IFCSS is
an organization founded by the overseas Chinese students and scholars in the
USA after the June 4 Massacre in 1989, which cares deeply about China.
*
The Fifth Modernization *
Dissident
WEI Jingsheng proposed that China urgently needs "the Fifth
Modernization," which was the call to establish democracy first
articulated at the end of 1970's.
He said: "In fact, we attend this event every year mainly to show
the people inside China, instead of to show the embassy. We need to let people inside China know
that people overseas have not stopped their struggle. Their friends overseas still care about democracy and human rights
in China, care about those people being persecuted ."
IFCSS
council chair HUANG Ciping announced this year's IFCSS Spirit of Freedom
Awardees to be two democratic activists inside of China: "One is Mr. Li
Chengpeng, the other is Liu Xianbing who is still in prison."
The
victims and families of the 1989 democracy movement are also the concern of the
overseas organization.
*
Solidarity with the Tiananmen Mothers *
IFCSS
council member LU Wenhe said: "In the past 25 years, IFCSS has always been
in solidarity with the Tiananmen Mothers' legitimate three demands: investigate
the truth, punish the perpetrators, compensate the victims."
WANG
Weilin, the lone person who blocked military vehicles in Beijing, has been a
symbol of the courage and responsibility that Chinese people displayed in
1989. An American sculptor has
made a sculpture of him.
CHEN
Qiao, the 17 year old daughter of dissident Liu Xianbin, said: "Today I
saw a documentary of the whole process of June 4, which specifically talked about
this person who stopped the tanks.
I was really touched. I
really can not imagine that one person can carry the dream of a country and its
people to stop in front of a tank."
* Representative of conscience *
WEI
Jingsheng calls "Wang Weilin" a representative of the Chinese people
's conscience: "the whole world see us Chinese people as not a coward
nation."
YANG
Qianyi, daughter of a Chinese dissident Yang Hai, is a high school freshman in
the USA. She said: "I want to
express my gratitude to the warriors in Tiananmen Square, because we know that
they strived for our generation and our future, and devoted their lives for our
freedom and for us to be able to live better in that land."
