Human
Rights Leaders Gather in Front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington to
Commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the June 4 Massacre
--
Radio Free Asia report
2014-06-01
Right
before the 25th anniversary of June 4 Massacre in Beijing, nearly 100 human
rights leaders and people who support Chinese democracy and human rights from
various cities across the USA and from Mainland China and Japan gathered in
front of the Chinese embassy in Washington DC, USA, at 7:30pm on the evening of
May 31. The participants in the
commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the June 4 Massacre paid tribute to
these who sacrificed their lives in the democracy movement in 1989.
The
commemoration was hosted by the IFCSS (Independent Federation of Chinese
Students and Scholars, USA) and co-sponsored by many human rights and democracy
organizations that included the Wei Jingsheng Foundation, the Greater
Washington Network for Democracy in China (GWNDC), etc. The commemoration was moderated by Zhou
Jian, an IFCSS council member. Wei
Jingsheng, the pro-democracy leader; Harry Wu, human rights activist; Wang Dan,
the student leader in 1989; and the Honorable Seishu Makino, former
parliamentary member and vice minister of Japan, attended the commemoration and
delivered their speeches. After a
moment of silence for the victims of the June 4 Massacre in 1989, the
commemoration broadcast a recorded audio of You Weijie, the representative of
the Tiananmen Mothers. Wei
Jingsheng also unveiled the sculpture "Courage" at the commemoration,
in memory of the warrior who stopped the tanks on the way to Tiananmen
Square. Meanwhile, the IFCSS
announced its 2014 annual "Spirit of Freedom Award" to Li Chengpeng,
an Internet opinion leader, and Liu Xianbin, a human rights activist who is
still in prison, in recognition of their efforts to advocate for democracy and
human rights.
This
is the 25th year that the IFCSS has held its consecutive annual commemoration
of the June 4 Massacre. The
commemoration was also broadcast synchronously through live transmission to the
world, especially Mainland China, over the Internet.
