WASHINGTON
- On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the June 4 Tiananmen Square
massacre, there were commemorations held all over the world. The Independent Federation of Chinese
Students and Scholars (i.e. IFCSS) followed its tradition of more than two
decades to hold a commemoration in front of the Chinese Embassy in Washington
DC.
At
the commemoration, Huang Ciping, the IFCSS council chair, awarded this year's
IFCSS "Spirit of Freedom Award" to Liu Xianbin and Li Chengpeng, two
Democrats in China. The
commemoration also included a ceremonial unveiling of a statue of "Wang
Weilin", the iconic figure who blocked tanks alone at that time. In addition, it broadcasted a recorded
audio of Ms. You Weijie in Beijing, on behalf of the "Tiananmen
Mothers".
In
the recording, Ms. You Weijie said that this year, "the victim
families" of the June 4 Massacre have encountered "unprecedented
difficulties." She also said
to the knowledge of "the Tiananmen Mothers", among the victims
families of the June 4 Massacre, 36 of them have since died. "They left this world with regret
that they did not see the arrival of redress for the wrongs their children and
loved ones suffered."
Ms.
You Weijie said that she "felt great encouragement" from IFCSS'
continuous support to "the Tiananmen Mothers" and families of the
June 4 victims.
She
said: "Although we are separated by thousands of miles, our determination
of demand a re-evaluation of the June 4 Massacre is the same. To stop the killing, to respect life,
to love peace, for everyone to live freely and equally in their own homes, this
kind of ideology is the ideology of all modern civilized people. Only when the Chinese society accepts
the ideology of modern civilization to run the country, shall China have hope
for its future."
The
IFCSS council member, Lu Wenhe, who received his Ph.D. in economics from the
University of Florida in 1986 said: "In the past 25 years, IFCSS has
always been in solidarity with the legitimate three demands made by the
Tiananmen Mothers, that is: to investigate the truth; to punish the
perpetrators; and to compensate the victims."
The
Independent Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars was founded in the
Midwestern city of Chicago in July 1989 by tens of thousands of Chinese
students and scholars in the USA, after the student movement in Beijing was
suppressed with the June 4 Massacre.
Its main principle is to support the Chinese in their dream to realize
democracy and freedom. Huang
Ciping, the current council chair of this organization, said:
"'independent' is a very important word in its name. It means independence, especially
independence from the manipulation of the Chinese government's embassies and
consulates."
Huang
Ciping went on to say that among the people who still strive for IFCSS,
"Most of them have a Ph.D. and a full-time job; they could simply enjoy
their affluent American life and forget the other side of the
Pacific." The reason that
they have been consistently doing the same thing for more than twenty years,
while defying Chinese government harassment and even persecution, is due to
their "ideology and conscience."
In
August 2008, "green card" holder Lu Wenhe went back to China to visit
his relatives. But after the plane
landed in Shanghai, he was barred entry by the Chinese government and was
forced to fly back to the United States.
In September 2011, Mr. Lu, who already has a U.S. passport, applied for
a visit visa but was rejected by the Chinese embassy, so he was unable to care
for his mother's funeral. Huang
Ciping, who has lived in the U.S. for many years but not given up Chinese
nationality, has been refused a passport renewal by the Chinese government, and
is not allowed entry into China.
There
is a reader comment left on the VOA website that says: "If there was a
little bit of representation back then, this IFCSS does not have any
relationship with the current Chinese students who come to the USA. They are bunch of people messing around
in their 50's and 60's."
In
this regard, IFCSS council chair Huang Ciping, who graduated from the
University of Science and Technology of China, said: "Yes, after 25 years,
we are no longer young. Year after
year, the founding members of IFCSS are gradually getting old. But over the years, especially in the
last a couple of years, we are fortunate to see some of the younger students
and visiting scholars participating in our activities, and their talk and thinking
is very similar to ours. The
future world belongs to them."
Among
the attendees of the May 31 commemoration of the June 4 Massacre in front of
the Chinese Embassy, there were two persons both born in the late 1990s, and
only at the high school age of sixteen and seventeen. They are the daughters of the Chinese dissidents Liu Xianbin
and Yang Hai. They came to the
U.S. to study in 2011 and 2012.
During
the speech of Chen Qiao, daughter of Liu Xianbin, she described being moved by
"Wang Weilin" during a documentary about the whole June 4 event right
before the commemoration. "I
really can not imagine that one person was willing to carry the dream of the
whole country and its people, to stand in front of the tanks."
Wei
Jingsheng, chair of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, who attended the
commemoration, called "Wang Weilin" the representative of the
conscience of the Chinese people, "who use their own lives, with their own
blood, to fight for the future of a better China." Wei Jingsheng also pointed out that
"Wang Weilin" enabled "the world to see that we the Chinese
people are not a weak nation."
Wei
Jingsheng further expressed that the location of activities to commemorate the
June 4 Massacre being in front of the Chinese Embassy "was not primarily
for people in the embassy to see, but for people in China to see; and let them
know that these people overseas have not stopped the fight. These overseas friends are still
consistently concerned about the Chinese democracy and human rights; they are
concerned about those people being persecuted. "
Through
his own personal experience, Wei Jingsheng talked about the significance of the
outside world being in solidarity with democracy activists in China, especially
the dissidents in prison.
"Although the Communist Party has particularly strict news blockage
against we the dissidents, occasionally there will be a little message
revealed. Some police will ask:
'Old Wei, how could you have so many friends overseas, especially so many
foreign friends? ' I said: 'How do
you know?' He said: 'There is a
whole stack of postcards sent to you! '
For those who have been in that kind of harsh prison with such a
stressful mental environment, that news is extremely encouraging! Much bigger than the imagination of the
average people."
The
people who came from everywhere who participated the commemoration of the 25th
Anniversary of the June 4 Massacre hosted by the IFCSS, sang a song titled
"Unforgettable June 4" with the tune of "the Children of the
Dragon" as their way to remember the fallen heroes and hope of sunshine.
Because
of the June 4 Massacre, "the Children of the Dragon" now has a new
meaning.

全美学自联：难忘六四

1989年"六四"天安门事件25周年之际，世界各地都举办了纪念活动。"全美中国学生学者自治联合会"(简称"学自联")依据过去20几年来的传统，在中国驻美大使馆前面举行了纪念会。
会上，“学自联”理事长黄慈萍为李承鹏和刘贤斌两位在中国的民主人士颁发了本年度的“自由精神奖”，并为当年只身挡坦克的“王维林”举行了塑像的揭幕仪式。会上还播放了“天安门母亲”代表尤维洁女士特地从北京录制的一段录音。
尤维洁女士在录音中说，今年，“六四”遇难者家属“遭到了前所未有的困境”。她还说，就“天安门母亲”所知，“六四”遇难者家属当中，已经有36位相继离世。"他们是带着遗憾离开了我们，他们没能看到自己的儿女和亲人的沉冤被昭雪的那一天的到来。"
尤维洁女士说， "学自联"给予"天安门母亲"和"六四"遇难者家属"一如既往"的支持，让她"感到莫大的鼓舞"。
她说：“你们和我们虽远隔万里，但是我们要求重新评价‘六四’的决心是一致的。制止杀戮，尊重生命，热爱和平，每一个人都可以自由、平等地生活在自己的家园中，这样的理念是现代文明人的理念。中国的社会只有采用现代文明的理念治国，中国的未来才会有希望。”
“全美学自联”理事、1986年从佛罗里达大学获得经济学博士学位的陆文禾说："全美学自联过去25年来，一直在声援'天安门母亲'提出的三项正当要求，那就是：调查真相、惩办凶手、抚恤受难者。"
全美中国学生学者自治联合会是由数万名留美的学生学者于1989年7月北京镇压学生运动的"六四"屠杀事件之后，在美国中部城市芝加哥成立的。其主要宗旨即是支持中国实现民主和自由。该组织现任理事长黄慈萍介绍说，"自治"是这个名称中很重要的字眼，它意味着独立，尤其是独立于中国政府驻外使领馆的操控。
黄慈萍说，至今仍然为“学自联”奔走的留美人士当中，“大多数都有博士学位和全职工作，完全可以只顾自己享受美国的优裕生活而忘掉太平洋的那边”；之所以二十余年如一日，不畏中国政府的骚扰、甚至迫害，是出于“理念和良心”。
2008年8月，持有"绿卡"的陆文禾回中国探亲，但是飞机在上海落地之后，被中国政府禁止入关，被迫乘机返回美国。2011年9月，已经持有美国护照的陆文禾申请回国探亲签证，被中国大使馆拒绝，使他未能为母亲料理丧事。旅居美国多年的黄慈萍至今没有放弃中国国籍，但是中国政府拒绝给她颁发护照，并且不允许她入境。
美国之音网站上有留言说：“这个全美学自联，如果说当年还有那么一点点代表性，如今与全美来自中国的留学生可以说丝毫没有关系了。都是些五、六十岁或以上的人在那儿混 。"
对此，“学自联”理事长、毕业于中国科技大学的黄慈萍说：“是的，25年过去了，我们也已不再年青。年复一年，学自联的创会成员在渐渐老去。但这些年来尤其是这两年，我们有幸看到一些年青的留学生及访问学者来参加我们的活动，他们的谈吐见识也非常与我们相似。未来的世界是他们的。"
在出席5月31日"学自联"在中国驻美大使馆前举行"六四"纪念会的人当中，有两位出生于1990年代后期、年仅十六、七岁的高中生。她们分别是中国异议人士刘贤斌和杨海的女儿，先后于2011、2012年来美国留学。
刘贤斌的女儿陈桥在会上发言时说，在参加纪念会之前，刚刚看了一部讲述“六四”整个过程的纪录片，尤其被“王维林”所打动。“我真的不能想象，一个人能够愿意带着一个国家、百姓的梦想，而堵在一个坦克车的前面。”
出席纪念会的中国民主运动海外联席会议主席魏京生称“王维林”是有良知的中国人的代表，“用自己的生命、用自己的鲜血，来为中国争取一个好的前途。”魏京生还指出，透过“王维林”，“全世界都看到，咱们中国人不是一个懦弱的民族。”
魏京生进而表示，纪念“六四”的活动，虽然地点选择在中国驻美大使馆前，但是“主要不是做给大使馆看的，而是做给国内老百姓看的。让他们知道，海外这些人，并没有停止抗争，海外的朋友，仍然是坚持关注中国的民主，关注中国的人权，关注那些受迫害的老百姓。”
魏京生透过亲身经历，讲述了外界的声援对中国国内民主人士、尤其是关在牢狱里的异议人士所具有的意义。“共产党那时候虽然对我们这些政治犯封锁得特别严，但是偶尔还是会有一点点消息透露出来。比如有的警察会说：‘老魏，你海外怎么有那么多朋友啊？那么多外国朋友？’我说：‘你怎么知道？’他说：‘给你寄的明信片摞了一大堆了！’这个消息对于那些一直在监狱里那种恶劣的、精神压力非常大的环境中的人，鼓励的作用特别大。比一般人想象的（鼓励的作用）要大得多。”
从各地赶来参加全美中国学生学者自治联合会“六四”廿五周年纪念会的人士，以一首“难忘六四”，和着“龙的传人”的曲调，缅怀逝去的英雄，唱出对光明的渴望。
由于“六四”，“龙的传人”如今又有了新的涵义。
