Huang
Ciping's Speech at the Second Special Congress of National Committee of
Democratic Party of China on December 13, 2014
Thank
you for inviting me to New York to speak today at the opening of second special
congress of National Committee of Democratic Party of China.
I
am honored to be an honored guest for today's event, so I came all the way from
DC to attend.
Thanks
also for Wang Juntao's hospitality.
We have known each other for more than 30 years, and I am glad that we
are still sitting at the same table to discuss how to realize democracy in
China. And I still remember that
20 years ago I drove far away to meet Juntao to push him to start a political
opposition party, as I was always so convinced of the importance of this
political opposition against the one party dictatorship of the Communist
regime. We must have opposition
party if we want to build a true democratic political system in China. So I am glad to see so many people here
today, new or old friends.
Being
overseas, it is important for us to continue working on two aspects. One is what we often do from the US
Capital city of Washington DC: mobilize international communities and seek
their support for Chinese democracy and human rights. The other is to do our share as Chinese to promote and
support our compatriots inside of China for their fights for democracy and
human rights. This second is
something that all of us here could do.
Today,
I see a lot of younger people here.
I am quite touched. I know
it is not easy to start your life here, to make a living, and meanwhile try to
do something meaningful for democracy and freedom in China. What I want to emphasize here is that
we must hold on to our ideals, and not stray away from them even when our lives
change or our own living conditions improve. We should not forget where we came from and what our people
back in China have. When one holds
on to one's ideals and took actions for these ideals, of course there would be
sacrifice - sacrifice of oneself for the others. I hope all the people here today have this spirit and would
be hold this ideal forever.
There
are questions of whether or not the Chinese democratic movement has made
progress over these years. I want
to make a short comment after reviewing our past thirty some years of effort
and results, that the conclusion is a definite "yes". But of course it could be better. We must work together -- the more
people joining forces, the better the results we will get. Now the international and domestic
situation are harbingering the upcoming revolution in China, we must be
mentally prepared to realize our democratic ideals through actions. Here I am emphasizing that not only must
we hold on to our ideology of democracy, more so we need to carry it into our
actions. Later, I am willing to
discuss more with you on this matter.
Thank
you all!
