His Holiness the Dalai Lama Meets with Wei Jingsheng

At 11:15am on July 11, 2015, Mr. Wei Jingsheng and Ms. Huang Ciping went to the Hyatt Hotel in New York, to meet with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The meeting lasted for half an hour. Mr. Tsegyam, chief assistant to His Holiness the Dalai Lama, translated.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama greeted Mr. Wei at the door and warmly embraced him. After everyone sat down, His Holiness commented that Mr. Wei gained some weight and also looked a little older. He asked Mr. Wei about his health. Then both sides had a frank exchange of views on Chinese politics and the human rights situation, as well as the building democracy at the Tibetan exile community. His Holiness the Dalai Lama was very concerned about the human rights situation in China.

Part of the conversation also related to some Han Chinese boasting the Dalai Lama as the spiritual leader of all the Chinese people. His Holiness the Dalai Lama said with a smile: my main concern is the Tibetan people and religion; I do not want to participate China's politics; I pray for the well-being of all the Chinese people.

When talking about building democracy within the community of Tibetans-in-exile, His Holiness said: I have already retired, and that is the duty of the younger people. Wei Jingsheng suggested that His Holiness should use his prestige to offer more help to the younger politicians. Mr. Wei also expressed that building demoracy within the community of Tibetans-in-exile is extremely important to the long term stability of the Tibetan society. The Dalai Lama agreed with this view and said he would try his best to help them.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama hoped that Mr. Wei would keep contact with the prime minister of the Tibetan government-in-exile, to discuss a lot of detail issues. Wei Jingsheng wished His Holiness to be more concerned of his own health, as it is essential for the unity of the Tibetan people.

At the end of the talks, the Dalai Lama gave a Khata to each visitor and posed for pictures as well. In return, Mr. Wei gave the Dalai Lama his own book: "The Courage to Stand Alone: Letters from Prison and Other Writings". Before he sent everyone out, His Holiness the Dalai Lama hugged Wei Jingsheng tight and said "Thank you" in Chinese.

达赖喇嘛与魏京生先生会谈

2015年7月11日上午 11 点一刻，魏京生先生和黄慈萍女士，前往达赖喇嘛下榻的纽约凯悦饭店，和达赖喇嘛以及他的主要助手进行了半小时的会谈。会谈由达赖喇嘛的主要助手才嘉先生担任翻译。

达赖喇嘛在门口迎接了魏先生，并和他热烈拥抱。就座后达赖喇嘛首先说魏先生胖了一点也老了一点，并询问了身体状况。接下来双方就中国的政治和人权，以及西藏流亡社会的民主建设坦率地交流了意见。达赖喇嘛非常关注中国的人权状况。

谈话中提到有少数汉族人吹捧达赖喇嘛是全中国人民的精神领袖。达赖喇嘛笑着说；我主要关心的是藏族人民和宗教，不想参与到中国的政治中。我为全中国人民的福祉而祈祷。

在谈论流亡藏人的民主建设时，达赖喇嘛说：我已经退休了，那都是他们年轻人的事情了。魏先生认为达赖喇嘛应该利用自己的威望，给年轻的政治家们更多的帮助。魏先生认为流亡藏人社区的民主建设，对西藏社会的长期稳定极其重要。达赖喇嘛也同意这个看法，并表示他会尽力帮助他们。

达赖喇嘛希望魏先生经常和流亡政府的总理联络，讨论很多具体的事务。魏先生则希望达赖喇嘛更加关心自己的身体，因为这对团结藏族人民至关重要。

会谈结束时，达赖喇嘛给大家佩带了哈达，并合影留念。魏京生先生则将他本人的“狱中书信集”敬赠给了达赖喇嘛。达赖喇嘛送大家出门前，紧紧地拥抱着魏先生，用汉语说：谢谢。
