People Commemorate the June 4th Massacre in Washington DC; Wei Jingsheng Sends His Message Calling for the Unity of the Hong Kong People

-- by Huang Xiaoshan and Huang Letao, Radio Free Asia Cantonese Service

June 5, 2016

On the evening on Saturday (June 4th) , Chinese in United States came together for a candlelight vigil in front of the Chinese embassy in Washington DC to mourn the Chinese students and citizens massacred 27 years ago.  Some students from Hong Kong also made a special trip to attend the activities.

One of the organizers, IFCSS alternative council member Chen Chuangchuang, said in his opening statement at the commemoration that regardless whether it was the Cultural Revolution, the Democracy Wall, the 1989 Democracy Movement, or contemporary rights defending, Chinese pro-democracy activists are lacking intergenerational communication, which gives the Communist regime a chance to take advantage to induce differentiation, buyout, and suppression.  How to deal with the Communist regime is an issue that the pro-democracy activists of every generation need to face.

During the commemoration in the evening, a letter from You Weijie on behalf of the Tiananmen Mothers was also read.

Sculptor Chen Weiming of the Exhibition of the State Terrorist Atrocities Conducted by the Chinese Communist Regime also participated in the candlelight vigil with his own production of the more than 3-meter high Goddess of Democracy statue.

Our station reporter contacted Chen Weiming on Saturday night.  He said at that time the commemoration had just ended.  His Exhibition of the State Terrorist Atrocities Conducted by the Chinese Communist Regime team traveled thousands of miles, to arrive in Washington DC before June 4th to participate in the commemoration and to give a live speech.

Chen Weiming said: Tonight, it was the IFCSS and the Wei Jingsheng Foundation which sponsored this event with more than one hundred people participating.  Teacher Wei Jingsheng also attended the event.  We also held a candlelight vigil.  The event started at 7pm and ended at 10:30pm.  Today, our Exhibition of the State Terrorist Atrocities Conducted by the Chinese Communist Regime from Los Angeles arrived Washington DC with more than 200 pictures and my more than 3 meter high Goddess of Democracy statue.

Chen Weiming said, after this Washington commemoration event, they will travel thousands more miles.  The total tour mileage will be more than ten thousand miles.

After the commemoration finished that evening, our station reporter interviewed Wei Jingsheng, the chairman of the Overseas Chinese Democracy Coalition, another co-sponsor.  He said that this year's commemoration was similar to previous years, having a similar program.  The difference was the works brought by Chen Weiming.

For various topics concerning the June 4th commemoration in Hong Kong, Wei Jingsheng devoted his analysis and commentary about its operation and strategy.  He told young people of Hong Kong that people of different ages but from the same democratic camp should unite and support each other, instead of being taken advantage of by the Communist regime.

Wei Jingsheng said: We just had several college students flying from Hong Kong talking to us here.  My opinion is that, even though the older leaders of the democratic activists have shortcomings even have made mistakes, they still belong to our same democratic camp.  It is understandable that young people have their own perspectives as they are from different generation.  However, regardless of different opinions, we should not split.  The separation they are doing now would make the Communist regime the happiest.  The Communist regime always uses this method to dissolve the opposition, to disintegrate one by one.  So no matter there is disagreement or not, we should unite and support each other on large-scale actions.

For the demands of independence from young people in Hong Kong, Wei Jingsheng expressed his support of all independent activities in different areas in an effort to get rid of Communist oppression.  However, to engage in political campaigns, we need to get more people to support and meet the actual conditions of reality.

Wei Jingsheng said: I support the Hong Kong young people's wish to be independent -- they want to get rid of the oppressions from the Communist regime.  This is the final goal of everyone.  In fact, Taiwan's Sunflower Student Movement also implied the same thing, which was to avoid and escape from the tyranny of the Communist regime.  Same for Hong Kong's pro-independence group.  However, I think that they are a little detached from reality for something they proposed.  When you propose a political movement and put an unrealistic thing as its main theoretical fulcrum, then the theory itself is a problem.  So I think sometimes young people are not paying attention to strategy.  You want to attract more people!  As a genuine political movement, we must consider the acceptance of the masses and a variety of realistic conditions.

Wei Jingsheng also explained on the wording of "vindication of June 4" and its background.  He said: these pro-democracy activists from the battlefront of struggle in Mainland China and Hong Kong are facing direct pressure from the Communist regime.  Therefore, they proposed more moderate slogans for survival, which can be understood.  In fact, now more and more people, including people inside China have also understood that when the Communist Party is overthrown, there is no need to have the Communist Party butchers to vindicate the June 4 victims.

We report that on Saturday night, there were also second generations from the June 4th families.  Yang Qianyi, daughter of June 4th student leader Yang Hai from Shandong Province, made it clear that as a second generation person from the June 4 generation, we should uphold parents' faith and keep on fighting.
