The
Official Opening of the Third China Road International Symposium in Copenhagen
Concentrated Around the Significance of Taiwan's Democratization
--
by Tian Yi of Radio Free Asia
August
22, 2016
On
the morning of August 22, the international symposium on the issue of Taiwan's
democratization and its relationship with Mainland China officially opened in
Copenhagen, Denmark. The famous
Han Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng and Mongolian rights defendant leader Xi
Haiming highly praised the significance of the Taiwan's democratization and the
mutually dependent relationships between the rights defending struggles of the
different ethnic groups.
The
3rd China Road International Symposium was hosted by the China Road
International Research Association registered in Denmark. Conference registration began on August
21 and discussion officially opened on August 22. According to what this reporter learned, about 50 experts,
scholars and dissidents from the United States, Taiwan, Hong Kong and European
countries, attended the opening ceremony in the morning. The opening ceremony was immediately
followed by presentations and discussions of the conference. At 13:30 in the afternoon, this
reporter interviewed Chairman Xi Haiming, who was invited to the conference as
the representative of the Mongolian rights movement.
Regarding
the conference in the morning, Xi Haiming told the reporter: "the
conference had its opening during the morning session. Its title was 'The Inspiration of
Taiwan's Democratization and Party Alternation & the Implication of
Taiwan's Democratic Achievement for Democratization for Mainland China'. Speeches of the two professors from
Taiwan analyzed issues from both academic and realistic angles. One was Professor Yeau-Tarn Lee. The other was Professor Chien Yuan
Tseng. Professor Tseng spoke about
the current democracy in Taiwan, and the issues it faces that need to be solved
after the new political party came to power. They all expressed their strong concern and support for the
democratization in Mainland China."
At
the time of this interview, Wei Jingsheng, the famous Chinese dissident exiled
in the United States was speaking at the conference. Regarding Wei's speech, Chairman Xi Haiming said, "Wei
Jingsheng is talking about the relationship between Taiwan and the
democratization of Mainland China.
He thinks it is also needed and very beneficial for Taiwan's own
security to support the democratization in China. As of now, the conference is still going on, with a lot of
discussion."
Near
the end of this interview, Chair Xi Haiming talked about his own forthcoming
speech. He said: "My view is
that Taiwan has truly realized its democratization and the alternation of
political parties in power. The
existence of Taiwan is an encouragement to those of us, such as Tibetans,
Uyghurs, and Mongolians, who fight for self-determination. If Taiwan cannot hold on under the
pressure of the Communist Party, then the hopes for those of us who are under
the suppression of the Chinese Communist Party would be even slimmer. Taiwan's existence is a kind of encouragement
to us. It encourages us to struggle
for our own rights, to elect our own leaders and to manage our own affairs like
Taiwan. So it is not only if
Taiwan could give us some concrete support, but it also offers great
significance to us spiritually with great encouragement to us."
Regarding
the significance of the rights defending struggle of the different regions and
different ethnic groups of Mainland China to Taiwan, both Chairman Xi Haiming
and Mr. Wei Jingsheng equally stressed the mutual support and interdependent
relationships. In this regard, he
said, "Surely our struggle has some kind of help to the security of
Taiwan."
